Review Dees v the Suns and no Trac: the Good, the Bad and the Fugly

I might have been the only one expecting the win. Was in the country with my family and talked my brother (Goodwin killed his interest) into watching the game as he hadn't watched since early last season. Had a great time watching him being blown away by the difference in how we played.

Most of what I would have said has already been posted so I won't repeat, but I ****ing love that we're playing a great way with guys who can cover ground. One thing I haven't seen mentioned this season is that Gawn appears to be playing angry in way he hasn't before. First couple games I assumed his opponents were just doing some sketchy stuff that had pissed him off, but he seems to be aggro at all his opponents this year like King has got him to set that tone as captain.

Far out how good is footy again? Feels like coming out of 4 years of absolute slog footy, King has breathed life into this group and it’s just so fun to watch. Young players playing with so much confidence, and we have leaders across the ground, including Steele who’s come in and been fantastic.

Unfortunately missed the game but caught the last quarter, has to be one out best wins in years against a genuinely good Suns side who challenged us.

Will watch that on replay, when would you ever watch a Goody dees match on replay post 21? King dees is where it’s at.
I even watched the preseason games multiple times this season. Going to watch this one a couple times at least. The GF is the only Goodwin game you'd ever watch twice.

Genuinely criminal not sacking Goody after 2024, let alone 2023. Personally I'd have been happy to see him go after 2022 but you can understand why they might have kept him around since he was so loved by the players if he promised to change things, which he barely did in 2023. Then I reckon they saw the forward line injuries of late 2023 and figured Goody was hard done by and they couldn't sack him.

But how the **** did he survive 2024. The absolute tragedy of not getting to see Trac and Oliver play under a proper coach with teammates who could make the most of their brilliance...
I'll be honest, I was in denial about Goodwin and would defend him a fair bit in 2023. However, that straight sets exit was ******* deplorable and he should've been sacked on the spot. It was inexcusable. Worst experience I've had as a Melbourne fan

But for some reason they'd just re-signed right before the finals so there was just no way it would happen. AFL clubs as a whole aren't ruthless enough with this sort of things.

And then you have guys like Whately and Lyon thinking that Goody was hard done by when it did happen, I wonder if they realise that Goody was just full of shit now?

I know I/we should all move on but he had such a key part in ruining my love for the club and footy as a whole.

That being said, I still think Goody will have a decent career from now on, and he's admitted that sacking him was the right thing to do. Just wished it happened earlier lol

Even then though, King has tried to balance our centre square mix far more than Goodwin ever did.

Goodwin brought kossie, rivers and windsor into mix last year.

Goody did a lot wrong, but he still instilled the basics in these players thats assisting king.

I was all for sacking goodwin, we kept losing the same way for 2 years. Plus contested possesion, clearance, inside 50 count.

Biggest mistake was not trading oliver 2 years ago, the game has gone passed him unless he finds his 2021 finals form.

I wouldnt have selected oliver in our side last year, played trac, kossie, windsor, sparrow, rivers.

Ifs and buts. Its great to see the dees select King as coach who has the foresight to see where the game was going and leap frog straight there.

I see us the same way the pies took on the comp in 2022 and the hawks in 2024. How far we go, time will tell.

Interested to see how far this takes us, it's full on vibes footy.
It doesn't feel like it's all attack though. The freedom to attack means you can see people wanna run and chase because it's being rewarded with scores

We are playing some good tempo footy, and doing smart things.

Round 1 against the saints, chipping the ball round the arc in the last 3 minutes.

Even yesterday there was a distinct change in strategy when Gawn was off in the last quarter to not let the suns have the ball.

We were (are) 0/8 in games decided by 10 points or less by playing stupid 90s football.

Yeah, remember seeing an early on training clip when King first arrived. I guess they were doing a game day style drill, can't remember who the player was, (Jiath?) but they made a poor decision. King reassured that we want to be positive in the ball movement but also recognises when to slow it down if necessary. Your probably right in regards for reward with running. Under King you may go a rewarded for your running but that's because with quick ball movement there's a plethora of good options. Where under Goodwin there's just constant unrewarded running because the ball movement is so slow. Trying to run into a crowded forward line would not be fun.

That and imagine putting in a long running effort, laying a tackle, getting holding the ball and then your team just bombs it back to a contest to go again. Now we're super desperate to give it to runners and get deep entries rather than shallow ones

The run benefits blokes like Sharp so well. In terms of Brisbane trades his running capacity gave us something handy compared to when we dragged Fullerton out of them. Different players i know but you could at least point to his running. But last year you could see they recruited him to fill that role of other winger but unsure how to use him and a gameplan that doesn't reward his strengths as a footballer. Goodwin seemed to favour the one wing up and one wing back that he had with Langdon and Brayshaw, Sharp seemed to get lost a lot last year in that or was running through the forward line.

Yesterday we got a kick over the top and both wingmen in Sharp and Langdon where 40 meters on their own out in front of goal that got as a shot on goal. You never would have seen them both push forward aggressively like that under Goody. But they're still trusted to work up and down the ground too. There's more natural flow to the movement rather than having Langdon do whatever and the other winger try to drop back or guard their opponent. Now Sharp is getting handball receives, being an option for an exit kick, overlap run and generally using his speed and endurance to help transition the ball. AND when we do have to a long down the line, providing a roving option or ready for a handball release

Don't know how to paste it properly but how good was this play.
We are unreal to watch now.

Haha only cause Kozzie called him to do it. But the whole thing. Howes leaving his man to take a hit and make a spoil, Kozzy taking it and going, getting Shepharded and then going long to Latrelle over the top. Backs himself and calls in JVR to lead at him and he does and gets a well weighted kick.

What I love is that we told Nathan Buckley to get stuffed. All of this 'ummm, ahhh, I'll let you know, nonsense'. Yeah, no Nathan. We don't want you, King it is.

I know he doesnt like it but Gawn's tap work since hes been forced to jump in centre throw ups has been really good. So much for the rule change not suiting him.

And Petty was actually really good as a backup ruck yesterday, even against Witts at ball ups and throw ins around the ground I thought he held his own well.

Now im wondering if this was another Goody job, telling him to drop the taps into congestion where as now hes looking to hit it to guys on the fly

Oddly prior to the rule change Goodwin had a shot at the rules back then on 360 and said it's a shame he wasn't jumping at the ball anymore

I never thought the rule change was going to be a big issue personally. Yeah Gawn liked to hold space with the unpredictable nature of the bounce, so did a lot of rucks. The whole crossing the line stuff is meant to work with the removal of the bounce. With the throw up going straighter there's no real need to try and defend the drop zone or dash over to reach it anymore. It's now down to timing the jump
