So I've done some maths.

Across 21 games this season's we've had:
- 7 players with 0-25 games experience play in at least 3 wins and 3 losses
- 8 players with 26-75 games experience play in at least 3 wins and 3 losses
- 6 players with 76-150 games experience play in at least 3 wins and 3 losses
- 8 players with 150 games experience play in at least 3 wins and 3 losses

Based on 21 games of AFL player ratings data, for these groups:
0-25:
- 18% drop in performance in losses v wins
- average rating: 7.9 (wins: 8.7; losses: 7.2)
26-75:
- 5% drop in performance in losses v wins
- average rating: 9.6 (wins: 9.9; losses: 9.4)
76-150:
- 36% drop in performance in losses v wins
- average rating: 8.5 (wins: 10.2; losses: 7.0)
150+:
- 6% drop in performance in losses v wins
- average rating: 12 (wins: 12.4; losses: 11.6)

But yes, it's the youngsters fault we're inconsistent.

How they presented Ken Hinkley on Footy Classified has got me dumbfounded. A big player for the Carlton job, played the youngsters... supporters are harsh on him....etc

Adding to my bemusement was the way they tee off on Pyke.

What voodoo does this guy have.
This was back in July.....holy Moly

6th oldest and 7th most experienced team of Round 23.

And that’s without Ebert, Watts and Motlop, who short of an unexpected sacking/retirement, would still be in the first team mix beyond their collective cap hit.

🤷‍♀️

Our hombre Reece in his Sunday Mail article keeps up the carry on about Port being a young team in 2019.

With more kids arriving this off-season and a chunk of experience on the way out, Port’s demographic has shifted even further in the direction of youth, but perhaps not enough.

The Power finished 10th with an 11-11 record this season while blooding a heap of kids and dealing with a constant string of injuries that often robbed it of top-end talent.

Below is a list of the players who had played less than 25 games before the season started and SPP was the only one with more than 25 games experience, who had only done 3 AFL preseasons.

Further proof of outside the three first round picks in 2018 racking up 61 of a possible 66 games, the 9 other inexperienced players, were bit players and racked up 47 games.

During Rounds 7 to 13 it was those 6 games (Rd 12 was a bye) that we had between 5 to 8 of our best 22 players missing with injuries and had to play a lot of inexperienced players, starting with no Dixon, Hartlett, Watts, Jonas and Robbie in Rd 7, then Rd 8 adding Wines and Ebert, then Rd 9 adding Burton, and Rd 13 we were missing Dixon, Watts, Rockliff, Wines and Ebert and thats when the guys in single digits got multiple games.

I didn't consider Motlop being dropped as a key player. Player was injured unless other description.

Anyone remember why SPP didn't play Rd 23. Was he omitted from original squad of 26 or was he omitted from it. Can find anything except Thursday named squad.

I’m not defending ken because I want him gone but people saying we don’t have a young group

Under 23 in best 22
Rozee
Butters
Duursma
Houston
DBJ

Howard
SPP
Bonner
Amon
Garner
Burton
Half of our best 22 are 23 and younger

Excluding: Marshall, Drew, Ladhams, Farrell, Frampton, Johnson who have all played games

This group is young. Our numbers are inflated because we have 4 250ish game players over 30 in our best 22

Bolded those who are definitely going to make it and be on our list during the next premiership tilt

I’m sure all you quants have done your bit here with the stats. With all due respect, tl;dr. And sorry for skipping on your details in favour of the big picture:

Which is that I’d be prepared to tolerate a bit more inconsistency from a “young group” than I would of stubbornness, of “refusal to learn” and of pig headed “denialism” from an old coach.

There is an excuse, a short term horizon, for one of these sets of qualities. Not for the other. #sackhinkley
