Half of our best 22 are 23 and younger

Excluding: Marshall, Drew, Ladhams, Farrell, Frampton, Johnson who have all played games

This group is young. Our numbers are inflated because we have 4 250ish game players over 30 in our best 22
Who goes out of that side if Watts, Wines and Ebert are fully fit and Dixon and Motlop get selected again. I'd say SPP, Bonner and Garner are the most likely.

Everyone has a bunch of players 23-and-younger.

Richmond had 9 on the weekend. Brisbane had 8. GWS had 9. Even West Coast had 8. They also have kids in the reserves or lost to injury.

It’s smoke and mirrors and an astronomical cop-out.

I'd say the truth is somewhere in the middle there. When we hear "young group", and think about the side that takes the field, it doesn't seem quite right because we picture Boak, Hoff, R Gray, Ebert, Broadbent, Hartlett, Ryder etc., all of whom are quite long in the tooth. At the same time though, it's undeniable that we do have quite a few greenhorns, probably over the average. I do think it's a bit of a copout to blame things primarily on a young list though, when clearly there are bigger issues.

The other thing all these young players have in common... none of them are forwards over 6ft, including Howard - a decent young defender.
In addition to all clubs being able to list a similar number of under 23s, if none of them are KPFs, pairs of opposition defenders will be combining for 23 marks against us until the end of time.

Also, sack Ken.

The overall list is something like 4th youngest, but it’s wholly disingenuous to claim “youth” when you’re voluntarily picking the likes of Ryder, Sutcliffe, Westhoff and Broadbent over Ladhams, Drew, Marshall and Garner.

If they went for a proper, balls deep rebuild, and pumped games into the kids while pensioning off obvious candidates, the club could at least set about selling a genuine message of hope.

Instead we’re half-pregnant, playing the youth card while claiming to be all-in on finals.

I am tired, so hopefully I have the correct figures. If not, please forget this ever existed:

LYC2WMG.jpg
Is it 4 of 8 wins, not 4 of 6?

I’ll take the young group excuse if guys like Frampton, Ladhams, Drew and 1 of Farrell/Woodcock/Cox were in the side over Ryder/S.Gray/Sutcliffe/Broadbent

It seems as soon as a kid has a bad game he’s dropped (or in Garners case, a good game and is dropped) but experienced players can let us down time and time again and it doesn’t matter.

Note also that our three best wins of the year all came in 'younger & less experienced' weeks.

To debunk this fully, we need to show the variance in performance (AFL player ratings) between wins and losses of our younger v experienced players.

I expect to find that our younger players have less variance in their performance, when compared to our more senior players, as evidenced by S Motlop, S Gray etc being shit when we lose and good when we win.

If I wasn't moving house this week I'd put the spreadsheet together

Somebody answer me this, if Hinkley is still coach for two more years because they don’t sack him or he leaves just how far can he with the likes of Boak, Robbie, Hartlett, Ebert, Broadbent, Ryder, Dixon , Motlop, Rockliff Watts, westhoff, Jonas,Sam Gray, (plus a couple of others on the list )who are all 27 years plus this season and many injury prone take us towards the next premiership. These are all players who have made up our team for the majority of the season and where are we now? 10th. We have a lot of younger players who have made the side for a couple of games here and there but if these senior players with a sprinkling of youth can only struggle to perhaps make the eight then what happens when most either retire or get badly injured over the next two years.Hinkley has left himself with very little to work with as the young ones are either not being selected and getting hardened experience with the senior players or are expected to carry them. Hinkley has over his time with PAFC had many changes to his coaching team, delisted or traded a lot of players, and bought into the club experienced players hoping to win a flag over the years and last season when looking like a finals hope at 11-4. the side capitulated , and what were we told 2019 will be better. With four games left is anyone really confident that we will make the eight or win the flag. I’m not and can’t see it in the next two years whoever coaches us, but if Hinkley is still the coach one thing I certain many of the fans won’t be happy.

Hinkley gets 2 more years, the new coach has no Westhoff, Boak, Ebert, Robbie, Ryder, Motlop, Rockliff, Broadbent, Jonas, maybe not Dixon, maybe no Watts, maybe no Hartlett- then Sutcliffe, McKenzie, Trengove, Mayes wont get new contracts. That's 16 potential players gone. Lycett and Wines will be our oldest players.

Or

the argument will be by some, Ken has started the rebuild, let him finish and give him 3 more years.

And the response to that would be that he failed with his first crack at it ergo he's got no right whatsoever to have a second crack.

Further to that, he's already failing with the second crack. Cam Sutcliffe FFS.

But that is not simply Ken's job. His job is to plan and build a team capable of winning more games of football. We are actually doing quite well with many young players, but this isn't what everyones frustration is about. Its about 5 years of going nowhere, mainly because of Ken's approach to balancing defence with effective scoring and his lack of time putting development into forwards. His early success was partly built on having high quality forwards in Schulz, Monfries, Wingard and Gray. All terrific players who could create opportunities and deliver in key moments. He hasn't replaced them, but tried to do something else in Ryder and Dixon, and this hasn't worked. Part of leading a footy team is being able to offer hope and for many of us that has been symbolised in having star forwards and effective ball movement. I don't think anyone has confidence that our predicament will change with Kens leadership.

Isn't it amazing that, with all our youth, Ken is getting EXACTLY the same result he has always done?

Yeah, the issue is the young players, all right...

At least this week we really were beaten belted by an older and more experienced side 🤪
The 37 year old youngster did alright on the 52 year old.
