Analysis “Required player”

Interested in other people’s thoughts on this expression in trade talks. It’s a bit of a cliche, and like much AFL lingo in that regard (I’m surely we all remember the elite -> jet -> A-grader evolution), seems to lose all meaning.

What do others interpret it as? Is it just a shorthand way of saying “this is a player we’d like to keep/hold to their contract.”

I find it a little odd, borderline obnoxious tbh, interested to hear others thoughts.
