Callum Mills

Callum Mills is one of the best young players in the AFL. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2016 AFL Rising Star award and was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in three of his four eligible years. Mills is a small defender with uncompromising courage who’s also capable of shifting through the midfield. The New South Welshman was elevated to Sydney’s leadership group during the 2018 pre-season at the age of just 21, and he’s now a member of a five-man leadership panel alongside co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Lance Franklin.

Good post caesar88.

Just wondering how to tally this with all your touting of Rowbottom, and how I thought you have been saying (or am I confusing you with someone else?) for the second half of the season he was our best and most valuable player?

Lastly, what does 'sweeping' mean? As in Mills is sweeping on the defensive side? Thanks.
Nope, you're correct that that's me. I think it's reasonably simple if you're prepared to accept that two things can both be great, separate to each other.

Mills is currently our best player, in that he's performed at such a high level over the entirety of last season (and even most of 2021 tbh.)

Rowbottom being our best player in a run where we looked close to if not the best team in the competition is why I think he can be our best player in the future.

One has proved it, the other still needs to prove it. Both will only get better.

I've had it made clear to me that I am in the minority on this though, so feel free to pile on if you must :p

Regarding the 'sweeper', I think of them as the mid providing coverage if the attacking mid (Warner, later on Rowbottom, Papley) fails to gain possession or win the clearance. And I think Mills is as good at this as anyone as he manages to do this without sacrificing the attacking parts of his game by being too defensive.

Didn't see these things as inconsistent. Each of those mids have different key and secondary roles. When Rowbottom stepped up Mills had less that he HAD to do. Parker too I think. Warner has a different role (Mister Excitement) and they can all be great. Feed off each other.

Sorry KC where did I say they were inconsistent?

Congrats Millsy.

Ticky009 Any chance we can update this banner... He's our captain and we have a pissy little out of date photo! He's 2 years older, bigger, stronger and better. Millsy is one of my favourites... (just in case you didn't guess!)

Not having a go at you or any of the mods, don't know how you all manage to work, have lives and still keep this board going... Kudos to you all!

Not sure how the recovery from the calf injury is going for Mills but I thought he was building back into some good form until the game he played against the dogs. Just doesn't appear to be close to the 2022 form throughout this year.

Yeah, Was a beast last year but I feel like he's been really ordinary throughout the entire season this year. Hopefully he turns it around.

On Callum Mills’ 150th game

“I remember him at 16 years of age and coming into my office and asking questions about our game plan. I walked into Tom Harley’s office afterwards and said he’d captain the team one day. He was such a massive competitor and really loved his footy, and was thoughtful even at that age. Since he’s come through the Academy system he’s become an integral cog to this footy club. He won our Club Champion award last year, an All-Australian and just a really important player to that younger group coming through.”

Thought he was looking like himself v the dockers.

One of our most important, we need him fit.

An underrated shot for goal too.

Congratulations on the 150th, one of my favourite players, if only because I just love the 14 at our club.
