Cornes is being sarcastic, as he elaborated in the follow-up post. Cornes has been a vocal critic of players potentially injuring themselves in off-field activities, such as the Wines incident you mention and also Heeney for rope-swinging.

I suppose the difference for me is that the above were not (presumably) drunken incidents that happened three days after your last game for the season... by the captain of the team.
