watching the game a few days ago i notcied one thing thats changed from this game to today is that no players were carrying on and remanstrating after every free kick, they just got on with the game.

also the umps let a lot of marking contests that could of gone either away alone and let it flow a bit more.

Assholes. Its ruined the game!

I think history tells us that former swans' coach Rocket Eade invented it and used it to help get the swans to the grand final in 1996.

The tactic was used very sparingly and we were the only team that used it that year.

There's just so many calls that the umps make now.

Slapping the arms, eyes for the ball etc.

Maybe they didn't complain so much because there wasn't so many damn frees then. Let the bloody game run and stop being so pedantic!!!

Watch the 92 GF, I doubt they payed 1 free kick the whole game. Ablett elbows Pyke in the face in the first 2 minutes and Pyke didn't even get a free. In fact they kept the play going for a throw in and a bounce with Pyke lying on the ground right near the thickof the action

The umpiring style generally has changed a lot. Used to be the umps would let the game flow, very noticeably in tight games. Now it seems that the umps are under a lot of pressure to blow the whistle for any infringement they see, and ignore the overall flow of the game.

Could be that television has exaggerated any missed frees and now the umps can't be so flexible.

Love the 1997 Grand Final. Became an Adelaide fan the week before the GF (and have liked them as m favourite other than the Pies, since.) The Aussie Jones goal was the highlight, and I would have my money on seeing both the teams out there on the final Saturday of September this year.

The thing I remember most about the '97 GF was sharing a smoke with the president at half time in the back of the Southern Stand - INSIDE the ground!

I also remember how nervous he was and that he didn't have his own cigarettes!

Yeah I know - you don't smoke. ;)

Sheedy 1991 at Moorabin. Dropped two men free inside 50 and then counterattacked.

Popularised by Eade in Sydney, perfected by Wallace in 2000, and was Demonised when Thomas used it in 2002 9ironically enough for the same reason as Sheedy - a host of injuries).

Smoked like a chimney did Andrew.

The rest of the day I remember vividly. It ain't no blur to me.

I would like Adelaide to get through to the GF so we can take out proper vengeance.

It's strange because when it happened (I was watching on TV in Sydney at the time) I thought Ablett might have a free paid against him but the umpires said 'Play on'. After the game I remember reading a match review and an umpire who was on the senior panel but was watching from the stands near the boundary line that day claimed that it happened right in front of him and he thought there was nothing wrong with it. I must confess, I was a little surprised. I'm sorry, I can't remember which umpire.

As for '97, I think Blight had trained the Crows players to not react to opposition players attempts to sledge and distract them. Perhaps this also helped them to focus on the game and not dispute umpire decisions?

And how many did Plugger get that day?

Exactly.

thast was the reason for doing it (plus the fact the dons were down on personnel).

So flooding has been around for many a long year. Probably happened before that particular game as well, but Sheedy had his team use that tactic all day.

Pretty logical I suppose when the Saints game plan was "Kick it to Lockett" for about 10 years.
