been looking at some of the trades over history and was trying to work out the details of the 97 jeff white trade, can anyone confirm if the following details are correct? im aware it most likely includes on trading but i like to see where all the pieces of the puzzle finish up.

frementle gain - adrian fletcher, chris bond, daniel hargraves, pick 21(clem michael), pick 26 (brodie holland) & 1999 compensation pick 5 (leigh brown)
fremantle loss - jeff white & pick 22

melbourne gain - jeff white & pick 22 (troy longmuir)
melbourne loss - pick 2, pick 18 & 1999 compensation pick 5

richmond gain - pick 2 (brad ottens)
richmond loss - chris bond, pick 5 & pick 21

brisbane gain - pick 5 (luke power)
brisbane loss - adrian fletcher

footscray gain - pick 18 (mark alvey)
footscray loss - daniel hargraves

In hindsight why would Melbourne trade away pick 2 for Jeff White knowing that Brad Ottens, also a ruck man, was the 2nd best player in the draft???

Also how come we had that compensation pick???

You were stripped of pick 5 in the 99 draft for cheating the salary cap to get Jeff White in the first place.

melbourne was caught for salary cap cheating between 93 & 98

penalty was as follows,

1999 1st round draft pick given too fremantle as compensation for jeff white
2000 2nd & 3rd round picks taken away altogether
loss of 1st round draft pick suspended for 5 years
Fined $350,000
suspended $250,000 fine

Brad Ottens took years and years to develp into a good player, Jeff White was much better IMO

In all fairness when Joe Gutnick realised we were over the cap he went and informed the AFL

It is a bit complicated to break it down, but basically we traded pick 2 for Chris Bond who must have been about 30 years old. An often overlooked trade in our long list of horrors. How many years did Bond even play for us? Two? He's been of more value to us after he retired.

I take Jeff White pre center circle and injuries and Ottens every other day.

Spot on wall-e, good summary.

Pre centre circle days White was absolutely dominant in the ruck, but after those new rules were introduced (and several years if injuries) he was pretty much finished. It took away his advantage.

Ottens was a much better key forward also.

Nobody has brought up the fact a team was only allowed to draft ONE 17 year old player per draft at the time. This meant Melbourne's 2nd overall pick was only able to be used on a player who had already been overlooked in the prior year's draft. Melbourne were unable to draft both Travis Johnstone and Ottens, the stand out prospects of that year, and the pick was worth much less to Melbourne than it was in the hands of another club.

Securing Jeff White settled any debate between Travis Johnstone, widely regarded at the time as the best ever junior midfielder during the drafting era, and Brad Ottens for the #1 pick.

Fremantle were very fortunate to receive Melbourne's 1999 draft pick, no other stirpped picks have ever ended up at another club as ADDITIONAL compensation on top of a trade that seemed fair value. It may've made sense if Melbourne had secured White through the pre-season draft without a trade, however Fremantle did receive pick 2 and a four place upgrade of second round pick. This was for a #1 pick with two seasons under his belt, who had only showed promise in a handful of games. Interesting comparison to the Scully scenario now.

When Fremantle used the pre-season draft as a threat to secure Farmer at the end of 2001 at the age of 24, who was an All-Australian forward who had kicked 76 goals in 2000, and only gave up pick 17 (clearly not a fair trade), this wasn't what put them over the cap. They were already over the cap in 2001, and then post securing Farmer didn't have room in the cap to draft Fabian Francis.

As an aside, Melbourne were going to draft Darren Glass with pick 5 in the 1999 draft.
