A Carlton mate of mine has beenraving about Kreuzer as the best #1 pick ever - I reminded him that Josh Fraser is very similar in many ways to Kreuzer (same hype as well) and that in the end he will probably be a solid player but not the stand out of the draft. The Pies have got great value out of Fraser and he will probably end up being our captain but in the end he was not the superstar predicted.

So we put together this list of 1999 draft survivors 8 years on and roughly ranked them compared to their pick number. Some great names still going around with Pav & Brown the stand outs. The Cats 07 premiership side is just about built around this draft too.

Whilst I have been critical of our drafting over the years - what a great draft by the Dogs. 8 years on on the first 5 picks are all regular senior players.....

7 43 Lindsay Gilbee
13 13 Robert Murphy
17 32 Daniel Giansiracusa
20 37 Mitch Hahn
32 66 Ryan Hargrave

Have to agree with that all hits no misses there.

What a draft for Geelong.

We loaded up on draft picks after Leigh Colbert walked out. Also got Mooney via that trade.

Looking back it's hard to believe we picked Spriggs and Bray ahead of Chapman, Enright and Ling! Just goes to prove the point of the thread I guess.

Bruce and O'keefe..... what gems they turned out to be!!!
Gilbee and Enright are both great picks too.

This is a great thread. Maybe we should make a BF rule that drafts can not be discussed retrospectively until at least 8 yrs later.

And FWIW Lids will be rated as the best numero uno of all time in 8 yrs time.:D

Does that mean Dogs for Premiers in 2008??

That might be streching it a bit. They are all good solid players but they don't stand up to the Geelong 4 in comparison. You would pick the Cats 4 over the Dogs 5 every day. But the Dogs 5 are all experienced players now & are in their prime ready to fire - Dogs arent that far away.

Bruce, Gilbee, Enright in front of Fraser get of the drugs

Fraser plays in almost the toughest position on the ground he isnt a receiver like the other blokes

Geelong also backed it up again two years later. In 2001 they picked up Bartel, Kelly, S. Johnson, Ablett, and I THINK Moloney.

Those two drafts certainly provided the nucleus of the side. Whats really interesting is looking at the time gap, and how long it took for those players to hit their stride. Makes you think sides like Hawthorn possibly should really be getting the value for their good drafting in the 2010+ period. And Carlton a little later again.

just cause fraser plays in the ruck doesnt automatically means hes a better pick than the others.....so someone like Gilebee who shits all over fraser in foot skills(which is a good oen to have in a game of footy) have nothing on fraser just cause he plays in the ruck!?!?!

C Bruce is no way top 4 until he actually acheives something.

All I can recall is he had a blinder start to 2006 and was leading the Brownlow till Rd 8 and then got injured and dropped off. Good player but not ahead of Glass, Frazer....even rate Hunter ahead of Bruce.

How can you have Matthew Whelan and Ryan Hargrave below Cain Ackland? Seriously Cain Ackland should be dead last on that last without a doubt. He should be dead last on any list for that matter.
