Re: Draft Picks 10, 24, 26 & 33

Well when you have over 200 profiles and you are doing the whole list a few minor mistakes will slip through when you are cutting and pasting from the complete list of both bottom and top age players.

I did not realise i was getting marked for giving a free service

I was just pointing it out don't take it personally. I actually enjoy reading your profiles and find them very insightful and compare them with my thoughts.

I actually thought that we needed to draft another mature back up ruckman. The problem was not with our depth , it was with injury. Drafting another 18 year old ruckman will not help us now. We started the year with Hille , Laycock , Ryder , Bellchambers and Bock.

Now obviously Laycock is a big concern as he is always injured so has never been able to reach the potential he has. Bellchambers is only 20 but has shown a bit so far but he still needs a couple of years and Bock is an under weight rookie.

They may look at drafting a ruckman to replace Laycock as i have major doubts he will ever be the answer but really we need a ruckman that can play now more so we are covered.

Lets face it if Laycock some how does a pheonix job and rises from the ashes and Hille is ok then our first three ruckman will be aged between 22 and 28. Not like they are over the hill.

Fair enough, obviously I have not seen enough of your lesser ruckman to pass judgement. I only make this comment as I view Ryder as a KPP, and Hille as your only decent/elite ruckman.

Ryder is a ruckman. He played at under 18 level as a ruck/forward. He was actually the number one ruckman in front of Luenberger in the year they played Champs together , and before you say Luenberger was bottom age so was Ryder as there is only 3 months difference in age between them.
Ryder only played KP defence because of his leap and athletic ability. In actual fact he was not a great defender, if you watched his games in defence he never had a real defensive mind set , never played in touch or he never was really clued in on quick leads.
He got by becasue he read the play coming in ok and his ability to jump and remain cool under pressure with the ball was very good.

Ryder was drafted as a ruckman and that is the spot he was always going to play. He started this year as the second ruck behind Hille so it was no real surprise to those who knew his history that he ended up playing as well as he did this year. On top of that he has always wanted to be a ruckman and not a defender.
He has the leap and tap work that will see him be one of the elite ruckman in the competition :thumbsu:

Re: Draft Picks 10, 24, 26 & 33

From the 2 or 3 VFL (and reserves...) games I watched, you'd prefer Bock to give off the handball out the back than kick.
And saying his weight is his only issue - he was getting out-bodied by 6'1" VFL reserves full-backs. It's a big issue.

Oh dear.

On a side note (bock talk made me remember) I got told the other day Gumby is also quite thin which upset me a bit. Mates saw him and said isnt built enough to out muscle at chf (probs reason he fell over so much in preseason). I guess with his back not being able to do weights does that. Hope now he is getting onto them if he can. He even got compared to a mate of mine whos very tall and skinny which shocked me

Make your own judgments I guess.

Not pinning any hopes on him whatsoever.

Don't even expect him to play another senior game.

Re: Draft Picks 10, 24, 26 & 33

Muscle is not everything as Fletcher has shown as long as you know how to position your body in marking contests and the like. If Gumby having less muscle means that he can reduce his chances of injury then I say let him be as skinny as Bock if need be.

Spot on. Riewoldt's another example of a KPP with not very much muscle, but still able to hold his own in contests (except against Hurley :D).

Heck, even Darren Glass, who is supposedly one of the strongest guys in the league (and has shown as much by man-handling many Forwards much bigger than him) isn't the largest specimen running around.

If all things go to plan, Gumbleton will be playing CHF anyway; he will be required to run all day, present and take those pack marks we know he can already do. Neagle will be the one who may require that extra bit of size and strength, and he's already shown he's capable.

Yep good old core stability is the key and in Gumbies situation lets hope the back operations allow him to do the extra work on the core muscles that will allow him to be strong in a contest without having to bulk up a lot.

Ahh, precious memories.

Neagle will be the sort of forward who pushes players out of his way.
Gumby will be the sort that flies for his marks.

Agree that muscle isnt the be all end all for a chf, particularly being young, does help tho. As for Roo he is a huge unit!! Have you seen him in real life massive man. Maybe he doesnt man handle people often (brown like) but you dont see him get thrown off the ball to often (hurley exception ;))

Yep, sure have. He's far from a 'huge unit'. Broad shoulders, and very tall, but not a whole lot of muscle.

True. I wasn't implying that he's weak; quite the opposite in fact. I was using him as an example to demonstrate that you don't need to be Jay Cutler to hold your own in the AFL.

hehe no worries. Jay Cutler:thumbsu: reminds me a bit of Courtney Johns similar build similar mobility?

Yeah, Johns would've been the closest thing the AFL had to a bodybuilder.

Cutler would have anywhere between 30 and 50 kilos on him though, without exaggeration.

Nothing wrong with Jay Cutler
The bodybuilder? :thumbsu: The NFL player?

Anyway, I need to stop derailing threads.

Pick #10, hey. I want Cunnington.

Same :thumbsu:

Ant, any chance of Cunnington falling?

Never say never , i am as interested as anyone at how they will go after the first two. Nothing would surprise me this year.
I suspect he will be gone in the top 6 but you never know. I am hearing a few rumours that my tall preference in Talia may well be gone too.

Re: Draft Picks 10, 24, 26 & 33

If talia is gone as is presumably Butcher then a solid mid should slide through to us like Rohan or Lucas. More so if WCE get Jetta. The Bigfooty Phantom draft has shown what a few changes can do to the order. Do you rate Lucas Cunnington or Rohan higher ant?

Cunnington i rate highly, Lucas i dont mind as he is pretty good. I would be happy enough with him at 10.
I am not sold on Rohan . Yes he has that break away speed and explodes when he gets the ball but he does not find a lot of it. He was ordinary in all his TAC Cup finals when the Falcons needed someone up forward to make a difference and finally desite him winning the turn and kick off one step challenge at draft camp his kicking at pace is anything from ok to bloody woefull . Given he will be required to kick on the run more than he will off one step i think it is an important factor.

Re: Draft Picks 10, 24, 26 & 33

From a personal preference.

Pick 10: Kane Lucas or Daniel Talia
Pick 24: Allen Christensen
Pick 26: Jesse Chrichton
Pick 33: Troy Taylor or James Craig

If of course, these players are available at our selections.
