Now that a hole has been created by the fall of Nico, I'm certain he will rise to the occasion and fill it. With good form he will be in the team at the climax of the season.

Why did West Coast choose Callum Papertalk over Marley Williams? There were some on here saying WC should take Williams - who looked the goods prior to being drafted, and is looking the goods at present - yet WC instead chose a guy who struggles at WAFL reserves level.
I hope WC taking Papertalk isn't a case of Bedford MkII.

Our rookie/PSD selections are often a mixed bag and a portion of those that do succeed we often underutilise. Some teams have a great strike rate with their later picks/rookie list (Freo, Collingwood), whereas WC seem to often take a big gamble.

You beat me too it I was going to say the exact same thing mate. Really rate him as a player would slip into our team with ease has the potential to be a good line breaking mid too. Seriously need to address this problem in coming years cause I doubt with the compo picks and extra teams we won't have the luxury to waste picks.
Papertalk flashed his athletic ability in the preseason but showed little to no defensive ability. Obviously they are trying to develop this side of his game. I think he has even played at Fullback so I wouldn't be paying too much attention to his stats.

Youre as reactionary as usual.
I was a massive fan of Williams, but the knock on him was his fitness and his attitude. Collingwood is a good place for him, get out of the state and into a professional environment without the influence of friends and family. In saying that the standard of football he produced for WA, hard at the ball, strong, great kick of the football and reminded me of Chapman. It is beyond safe to say that Williams wouldn't be close to getting a game with us at the moment (we do things differently to Collingwood).
Papertalk was pretty bloody good for East Frementles colts side in 2011 and the stats reflect that, the step up can take some time for kids as raw as he is. He needs a lot more miles in his legs and the coaches will having him going after KPI's not reflected in the WAFL's stats sheets. It's a shame we have to cut a couple of rookies this year at the very least, because they need more time
But forgetting Williams and Papertalk, Nelson would be better than both. Wouldn't bring anything all that new to our list but he's a better footballer.

Marley Williams was a bit of a bad apple, lots of rumours about his drinking as well.
Its known he was banned from certain establishments in albany due to excessive drinking.
And I mean serious binge drinking.
Good thing he moved interstate and away from drinking friends.

Merely asking a question isn't being reactionary. So, if you're going to take a pot shot at me, at least get it right. And what do you mean by "as usual"? Have you got a multitude of specific examples to show that it's the usual from among my nearly 5,500 posts?
Fitness shouldn't be the deciding factor as to whether WC select a certain player or not. In a full time environment, a lack of fitness shouldn't be a difficult obstacle to overcome. For example, WC picked Weedon, and his fitness levels weren't good when drafted. Shooter McGovern's fitness was extremely poor, too.
There were question marks about Darling's attitude too, yet WC brought him in and he's been fine. Unless there are serious issues, it shouldn't be a deterrent. How many 18 year old's don't have an attitude? Some said Darling needed to get away from from WA to focus on his footy; yet he remains in WA and his behaviour has been fine, and his football output beyond expectations. I'm not saying that Marley would be the same, but it does go to show that a question mark or two prior to being drafted doesn't always play out post draft.
I understand that it takes time, but any player on an AFL list shouldn't be struggling at such a low level. It'd be understandable if he was battling at WAFL level at this stage, but he's not even close to that. It isn't reactionary to simply inquire as I have.

at Hansen out. Would love Embley in. Always thought Marley was a fantastic player and question marks should at least be discussed with the individual prior to drawing a line through their name. Football ability first, other issues can be sorted through.

I'd consider throwing Williams name around at the expense of Papertalk to be pretty reactionary, especially after half a season. Averaging 1.8 goals a game at Colts level and being a genuine line breaker got Papertalk drafted, we wouldn't want to do another Lewis Jetta?
If Williams didn't crack a game with Collingwood prematurely then we wouldn't hear of it. The club will have benchmarks for Papertalk to hit, work on his weaknesses. Better than him free wheeling and racking up stats.

Williams didn't just get a mention because he's playing, it was seeing Papertalk's stats and comment for last weekend's game in The Sunday Times review is what brought the thought to mind. Williams is also discussed because he was considered by some on this board as a potential rookie pick pre-draft. He was bypassed in favour of Papertalk, who was taken slightly before Williams.
If asking a simple question is reactionary, most of us here are guilty of it because this forum relies on questions and the discussion that stems from it. Btw, don't speak as to my motive for asking such a question. How could you possibly know it? Your call is mistaken.

Need to give Papertalk one more year at least. He needs another full pre-season and a year in the League and see how he goes from there.

Ive always found half way through their first season is the best time to judge rookies.

We, here, constantly assess players. The Sunday Times, for example, does it too. Is Papertalk exempt because he's a first year rookie? I certainly don't think so, and The Sunday Times doesn't think so either.
Constant assessment is different to definitive, papers stamped, judgment.

I realise that, but saying that we should've taken Williams over Papertalk based purely on what we've seen so far is ridiculous. Cox and Glass were absolute spuds at this point.

Where did I say WC should've taken Williams over Papertalk post draft? I simply asked the question: "why did West Coast choose Callum Papertalk over Marley Williams?" More is being read into what I've said than what's actually there.
