Subbing, lots of players who could make a real push at the first team with some good WAFL form early this season.

Strijk still looks like he's short on fitness after another interrupted preseason. Still oozes class though.

Will be a star, should be a high 1st round pick this year, I've had the chance to play alongside him and watch him a lot, he's got a good head on his shoulders too, he's a smart kid.

Murray Newman was back in the black ducks league side for the last scratchie. Looked classy with his run and set up of play, in the short amount of ground time he played.

Nah, lost by 11 points I think??

Amongst other things, 5 limp wristed efforts by 3 players cost us goals and therefore the game. The fact that it's a scratchie, I don't care, the efforts I do care about though.

Good start to the year

From what I saw, Strijk looked short of a gallop. He took a number of strong marks but failed to really influence the match. 6 inside 50s with no goals and from what I saw no goal assists either. West Perth as a whole really struggled with hitting up targets in the forward line.

McGovern has a little brother? who collected 18 Disposals, 9 Marks and kicked 2 goals Claremont.

We might also see Fraser Mcinnes's younger brother play for Perth colts this year. He's 2013 draft eligible like James Gaff.

Swift 20 possies, Neates 13 and a goal, hamp was quiet with 8

McInnes finished with 2 possesions and didn't touch the ball since the 1st quarter, most probably means injury

Terrible news if true about McInnes.

I wonder if any of Smith, Brennan or Stevenson are a chance of bumping Selwood out come rd 1.

I know WC aren't big on gutsy selection decisions and usually seniority counts for more than ability or form but it may pay dividends.

I went to the Perth vs Claremont game today, so I'll give some thoughts on how our guys went.

ASH SMITH (28 touches, 1 point) - His game drifted in between very good and very bad today; he'll need to work on his consistency if he wants to be first 22 this season. He had a case of the fumbles late and tired as most of the Perth players did due to injuries, but did some nice things and took a few good grabs. Is very good in 1 on 1 marking contests.

FRASER MCINNES (2 touches) - Injured, although seemed to be on the ground in the last quarter due to many other Demons injuries (). I give his game a thumbs up due to the courage he showed right in front of me backing back into oncoming traffic to try to contest a mark.

RYAN NEATES (13 touches, 1 goal) - Was rotated heavily throughout the game and struggled to get meaningful time up the ground with Claremont's strong midfield. Finished the game off very well, but by that stage Perth were basically off their feet. Underwhelming.

LEWIS STEVENSON (24 touches) - Easily the best Eagle on display today. Showed his class and poise with dashing runs out of defence and barely missed a target all day. Was defensively sublime as well; would be ready to step into the first team if required.

THOMAS SWIFT (20 touches) - Am sadly beginning to question whether or not Swift is up to it. His stats look OK but he was very poor today; his disposal by foot was very disappointing and showed flakiness in several contests; taking his time to get up from hits rather than bounce to his feet and tough it out. Wasn't happy with his game, sadly.

ANTON HAMP (8 touches) - Presented well and took a few nice marks on the lead but wasn't influential at all. Spent a lot of time on the bench and didn't do much when he went on.

JEREMY MCGOVERN (8 touches, 3 goals) - 3 goals is a good return on league debut but they were all pretty cheap goals. I was looking forward to seeing his contested marking but sadly it wasn't on show; he didn't really have the oppurtunity, mind. On the bright side, 3 goals is 3 goals so he'd have to be happy with that and better for the experience.

Thorne's assessment of the players is pretty spot on IMO. I would say that Swift set up play nicely with handball on a few occasions though.

I sat there for the first quarter before venturing up to the grandstand and finding a perfect seat in the middle! Had the perfect view of McInnes' courage, was great to see.

Yeah, to be fair to Swift he was much better by hand than foot. But of course being capable by hand is much, much easier than being damaging by foot.

It's a major concern that Swift's kicking is 'loopier' (for want of a better word) than most of the WAFL level players out there. Even Kane Mitchell seemed to have upped his skills today and was stabbing some nice passes.

Without seeing Stevenson play, they're decent stats for a HBF. These are the numbers he has to consistently produce to get a gig in the Eagles line-up. 4 tackles from him is pleasing to see, too.
