I was hoping Cal Bartlett would fill blackys spot? Isn't he an inside player?

We have struggled a lot more in the past when missing Brown then we have missing Black. I think our mids pick up the slack when Black is out while a key forward rarely steps up and kicks a few while Brown is missing.

Plus it seems clearances are becoming less important with "slingshot" footy being the new thing.

I wouldn't mind drafting a distributor and/or some elite speed for our half back line and putting work into Rich, Redden, Rockliff and Lester lifting their clearances.

Even if we could draft Boyd, he isn't going to fill Brown's shoes for a few years, we will need to use a Geelong type tall forward setup, no all star forwards, just a couple of guys that will give you a contest, I think Lisle and Martin can do that, along with Bergs and Longer for the rucks. We need better quality from our mids going inside 50 though, Brown or not, we need to get more one on one contests and be kicking to advantage. Don't have to laser pin point kick onto their chest, we just got to generate enough chances for our forwards, and then stack the odds of those chances with kicks to advantage. If we can do that, Brown wont be a huge loss for us going forward.

Could replace Brown with Brown (Mitch Brown from Geelong).

o_O I'm not clear what you are indicating? Are you suggesting in addition to Hanley, Golby, Yeo, Docherty, Polec, O'Brien, Hayes, Harwood, Wriggley or even Bewick, Crisp, Wearden as options or are you suggesting none mentioned above are good enough to fill that role?

Is the Geelong Brown better than what we have on our list like Lisle, Martin, Close, Michael, Cornelious?

Another Hanley would be good.

Someone like Golby ,Yeo, Harwood or Bewick but a better kick. Someone like Polec who can actually defend. Someone like O'Brien, Hayes, Wrigley or Wearden but that can play in the AFL.

Docherty may play this role but I'd look copy Sydney's back 6. 2 key backs (Grundy and Richards able to shut down their opponents), 1 third tall (Johnson), 1 shut down small back (Smith) and 3 rebounding defenders (Malceski, Shaw and Mattner).

Grundy= Maguire or Clarke
Richards = Merrett
Johnson = Patfull

I think we have these three covered.

Golby, Adcock and Yeo don't quite match it with Sydney smalls in terms of speed and skill.

I'm less concerned about speed than I am about game sense, skill and ability to defend. I see Docherty, Hanley and Yeo as 3 genuine grab and dash defensive options. A real playmaker would be great. Basically, I'm thinking a 194cm Luke Hodge - is that too big an ask?

I'd also add it is short term drafting if you are considering Merrett and Patfull as long term options and looking to draft around them. To me, the issue is getting someone to slot into their spots long term, rather than alongside them.

Did any of you blokes see Keefe play last year. I know he had an ACL but he is in the age bracket to grow with our young blokes, has ability in spades and has performed well as a key position footballer.

Sorry, throw some big bucks at Lachlan Keefe! High risk, but quality young key position footballer.

So have our blokes and in a far less esteemed midfield to support them. ... but throw the big bucks for a Collingwood rookie who may or may not develop post ACL because he is a QLDer?

I think we will probably rookie Archie Smith as a developmental ruckman and leave it at that. I don't think we need a senior ruckman as we have Leuenberger and Martin who are experienced, as well as Longer who will be entering his third year.

I see Matt Scharenberg is named at CHF it will be interesting to see how he goes, especially as he is now listed at 192cm which is just KPF height imo. He could be a chance at our first pick.

Offended by your thoughts on my want of Keefe based on his state of origin, like that ****ing matters to me!

Haven't heard much about Scharenberg, but I feel like he probably doesn't fit the age profile we need in an up and coming KPF. Need one who's two or three years further ahead at least, as wishful as that may be.

He isn't necessarily a KPF.

I'd be scouting through the state leagues for a KPF.

I think he will come up short of the 192 listing although if he did measure up great as I think he will be an excellent player. He does strike me as the type that Voss tends to like.

On KPDers isn't close being played there atm. 196cm guy with elite endurance who seems to be doing pretty well as a CHB at NEAFL level. Not a bad start. Bourke is playing FB and although a bit shorter than is ideal he seems to be doing very well in the company he is playing in. Tickner is listed at 194cm and could play forward or back. So I am less concerned with the young KPDs to tell the truth. Scharenberg if we picked him I think would come in as a Patfull like third defender with a better offensive game.

Fair bit of love for Archie Smith. Thoughts on Fraser Thurlow? Seems to be coming on very well. Played excellently in the U23 game against the SANFL, lead Labrador in disposals last week against Aspley and finished with 36 hit outs. Apparently a really good guy who is improving in leaps and bounds.

I am not sure that he is tall enough to play ruck at 197cm and he isn't the best athlete either. I think he will just be a good state league ruckman. Archie Smith has genuine ruck height and is a great athlete and has a fair bit more potential, I think it's better if we take a high upside rookie and develop him IMO.

I have been critical of Thrulow in the past two years, however his game has gone to another level this year. Ticks all the off-field intangibles you look for, so no worry there.

I was previously critical of his skill level and marking ability for someone his size. His contested marking has certainly improved, perhaps a by-product of his added bulk.

The big query I have is whether or not he could play first ruck at AFL level, he is a ruck/forward as opposed to forward/ruck. I'm not sure exactly what he measures in at, but I think it is under 200cm. Athletically and mobility wise he is quite good for a big man. Based on the improvement he has shown, he deserves a chance.

It wouldn't surprise me if we were forced to use a draft pick on Archie Smith. He's raw but is the type of Qld footballer to really rise in the draft rankings as the year goes on. I can see the athletic package with the basketball background being very appealing to clubs.

I went back and checked his testing results a couple of days ago and noted his measure at 197. I had thought he had grown a bit looking at him but I accept that height was still a bit of a concern.

I think it will depend on how he goes at the Champs and what improvement there is over the rest of the year. Its hard to see anyone using a ND pick on him atm but if he goes well from here on it is possible.

I am also going to be interested to see how Aliir Aliir goes for WA this year. He was as raw as they come last year for Qld. I wonder what 6 months or so in WA has done for him.
