True that, but we've got to start breaking these curses sometime.

Either that or we will be giving rookies jumpers in the triple figures soon enough ;)

What was the go wth Aish wearing number25 on draft night? He was the only drafted presented with a jumper, that had a number on it. Could it have been discussed with him pre draft?
Yeah I noticed that as well. Could that be his number? 25 is free. If so thank god he does not have number 1!

Here we are, just finished the draft, we are fairly happy about our picks and every once in awhile there's a little pessimism thrown in. After all the shite we've been through let's look forward. Doing my head in.

Yeah I just had a feeling he sort of knee he was heading north.

His post draft interviews indicate that Brisbane only really made serious contact with him the day before the draft.

There was a lot of gamesmanship going into this draft by our guys. Lots of talk about McCarthy and Bontempeli visits to Sheed but never linked to Aish. I'd like to think that our guys did not want to show their hand and certainly tried hard to get a slider to come to number 7. I like to believe that they actually succeeded in injecting Bontemepeli as the smokey to get Shara or Aish to slide and come to us.

Probably just picked up a numbered jumper by mistake.

Leppa did say, Aish is the one we wanted all along and we got him.

Would be rapt if Aish could be a Luke Power for us. Not the most damaging, penetrating disposal but just a smart, elusive little linking midfielder with genuine game sense, nipping through traffic making smart decisions and bringing teammates into the game.

Clubs take alternative routes to goal

St Kilda won five games in 2013, finished third-last on the ladder and got a new coach. Melbourne won two games, finishing in the slot below the Saints and getting a new coach too. The Brisbane Lions were forced into something resembling a mini-rebuild after five of their best kids walked out on the club last month. All three clubs have plenty of work to do: they know it and they have said it.

Brisbane, with six of the first 34 picks, had to do some wait and seeing. It was also in a position to get a bit of everything, and it did. The Lions should be happy. James Aish is a star. Lewis Taylor was a bargain and it's hard to see him ever deserting them. Nick Robertson isn't as proven, but is tough around the ball. Darcy Gardiner and Daniel McStay give them two young backs to work with. Tom Cutler was being considered by clubs with picks in the teens. They made the best of a bad situation.

I knew Boyd was big, but by god, he is a man mountain, or better yet, a Giant.

Probably would say it's a generic guernsey given out maybe because the stock is new and whatnot. Similar to how we always see those mock up designs in other parts of the forum they always have a generic number on the back for design purposes. I read somewhere McStay would be taking the 25 anyway.

Yeah i agree, think it was just me reading too much into it. Not saying it hasn't happened before, but i just can't remember new draftees having numbers on there backs on draft night.

My thoughts on our picks overall is that I was reasonably happy and that this should assist us in our rebuild. I was a little surprised over the number of talls that we took, although they are all key defender types.

James Aish was a very good pick up, he was the third best prospect and the best mid in the draft imo. I think he has a ton of development and needs to put on some muscle and improve his inside game but he has a load of talent. I think he has so much class and is a very smooth mover, he will be a great addition to our midfield and just adds some class to it that we probably lack. He may start in the ressies next year imo, although I expect him to play some senior footy.

Darcy Gardiner at 22, got that one right :). He is a little undersized at 193cm but that is not super small and he should still be a good key defender next to Clarke. He needs to work on his offensive game, but his defensive game for a tall is the best in this years draft imo. I was happy with this pick and I feel he could be a very good player for us.

Daniel McStay at 25, I felt that there were some better prospects available and as a tall I have my doubts over where he will fit in. He is a good size, a decent athlete and has a nice kick on him, but he will take a while and is more of a long term type. I have worries over his defensive game and his body work (similar to the concerns I had on Giles too). Still the upside and talent is there.

Lewis Taylor at 28, was a bit of a steal imo, although I did rate Dumont higher. He maybe short and he can make the occasional suspect decision and is prone to making the odd mistake, but by enlarge he does more good than bad. I hope he rediscovers his forward game from last year as he was quite poor this year.

I liked the pick of Tom Cutler at 33, I feel that he has a fair bit of upside with his athletic ability and his defensive game. Defensively he plays quite tall, is strong overhead and is definitely that third tall option. He won't replace Yeo imo but more of a Patful type. He is also very quick and moves well so athletically he should be well placed to succeed. I think he needs to work on firstly getting his injuries right and also improving his rebounding ability and in particular finding more of the ball.

I was a bit iffy on the pick of Robertson, I know that a few rate him, Quigley in particular. At that stage with our last live pick and having taken 3 talls (including Freeman) I think it was the smart decision to take a smaller type, and to be honest outside of Marsh and Templeton I didn't really rate the players around that area highly. At 191cm and with good running ability and a strong body Robertson has every chance to succeed and he definitely has ability. I think his upside is limited a bit and his best bet to make it could be as a tagger or an inside mid. He keeps up with the drafting of tall running types, which our recruiters seem to love.

Hopefully this years draft will help us ensure the transition from the older players to the younger guys is quite smooth, as I think that is partly what the intention is behind the drafting of some of these players.

Really happy with our drafting, however I would have liked us to take Crouch at 22 and hoped that Adelaide didn't take Gardiner at 23 so we could get him at 25. Regardless, think we've down really well. Hopefully these boys get settled in

Yeah I would have preferred to take Crouch or Hartung at 22 and hoped for Gardiner at 25.
