Addition by subtraction. Would anyone consider this type of deal.

Murphy and 12 to GWS for 1, 9, 20 and Adams.

1 gets you Boyd. 9 and a player could maybe get you Swallow or S. Selwood, 20 gets you D. Garlett or sliding mid. Our 2nd gets you Docherty.

Murphy gets you Boyd, Swallow and Adams. 1st gets you Garlett or young mid.
So you're saying Murph could/would command more than Judd in a trade?

Holy testical Tuesday.

Interesting listening to Cal Twomey saying that clubs may want to get out of this draft after pick #40 odd.

Suggesting that anything after about pick #25 is speculative. Gee, that's shallow if so.
Which is why we should try and keep out first rounder.
First pick #12
Betts compensation if no Daisy #13/#20
Trade for a pick in #20-#30 range.
Use our 2nd rounder (~#30 for Docherty)
Save our next pick for Dayle Garlett if he is still available
Then unless we see some outstanding sliders, start upgrading rookies.
I'd rather gave Cachia/Curnow and Bell on the senior list than an 18 year old pick 50 in a shallow draft

The SEN boys were talking about this very thing this morning.
Top end talent is pretty good though by all accounts.

How is this improving the list? Would you feel confident making top four after that?

Top 4? Steady on. We only won half our games for the year, even allowing for a lenient draw in which we only played (and lost) against each of the preliminary finalists once.

If the AFL choose to screw us on the draw based on our 6th placing then we'll be doing well just to finish 8th. Anything above that means our youngsters in Bootsma, Watson and Menzel have earned a spot in the side and big Levi has finally hit the big time.

Acquiring a free agent like Thomas and trading for a tall won't magically catapult us into preliminary final contention.

One word... Shiel.

Wants to come home. Our first round pick, Hampson/Warnock + Laidler for him and their third round pick!

Better result Han trying to rip the guts out of the club to get pick 1

Yes. Would improve our midfield hand over fist. Breaks lines, kicks goals, can play inside or out, decent disposal skills. I was looking at #12 for best tall available even if we pay overs given there aren't many in that range, but I would use it in heartbeat for Shiel.

Pick 12 and Hampson might get it done.

I do want Docherty and Staker from Brisbane though and was hoping some combination of #29, Hampson and Laidler would get that done. We can go hunting a long term tall next year if it comes to that.

If we don't get Thomas and lose Eddie, we have enough to get Docherty, Shiel and Staker losing only Eddie, Hampson, Laidler, Eddie compensation and our first rounder. If we do get Thomas we won't get the Eddie compensation.

How do we engineer (realistically):

In: Thomas, Shiel, Docherty, Staker
Out: Betts, Laidler, Hampson, #12

It feels short and not #29 short either. I love Yarran's potential but the opportunity to get Shiel into the side is too good to be true. We lack in true midfield strength and have to many players that haven't demonstrated they can play midfield to any great degree. Yazz is the only player of value we have to offer. Unfortunately it would have to be a deal with a WA club and then passing on whatever we got. We risk Yazz shoving it back up us, but attitude wise, Shiel is already were we want him to be.

Unless of course, we sell off Hampson and Warnock and trade in a competent backup ruck from somewhere.

To be honest, i wouldn't be averse to this. Its a high risk high reward option, but would take a bit of guts to pull. Would depend on the sort of rewards we get in return for sure. We'd need an older type (like Brogan was for GWS) and maybe even a mature age rookie ruckman (age 22ish?) to pull something like this off. We haven't had an 18 year old ruckman to develop for a long time either (since Jacobs perhaps?).

While trading both those ruckman is unlikely, i'd like to think its an option we could at least look into, if not entertain.

GWS has announced that Shiel is staying put

Yes, I can stop hyperventilating now. That almost threw everything else out the window.

Kade jumps up draft order
"He's just gone from strength to strength," Ablett told AFL.com.au.

"We've seen his footy continually improve throughout the year. We saw what he did earlier in the year, particularly at the AIS-AFL Academy's January camp and could see what an exciting athlete he was.

"But to actually get confirmed figures and that solid data on him now, it just backs up his football ability. Complemented by his athletic ability, I think it pushes him right up amongst the best kids in the country."
