hb:Hanley Merrett Golby
c: Karnesis Rich Rockliff

Pretty much my team with Lester in for Yeo and Polec or Mayes in for Mcgrath.
If Blacky doesn't make it to rd1 Polkinghorne to take his spot on the bench.

HF: Zorko Lisle Beams
F: Banfield Brown Mcgrath

Banfield very lucky to make it into the 22, I basically picked him for some more pace in the forward line
Lester, Yeo, Bewick all unlucky

why are so many jumping off the doc bandwagon????

very weird indeed

For Round 1? He hasn't really set the preseason alight, looking solid without demanding a place in the team.

thats true but he hasnt been terrible either and is a very important player for brisbane this year

and also allows hanley to play on a wing and give brisbane the kicking skills and speed that they need

But it is all predicated on him playing well enough to warrant a game. I mean, we could sign Jordan McMahon to give the side speed and kicking skills. Doesn't mean he's going well enough to play.

I tend to think Doc has been OK to date. But he certainly hasn't been playing a free-wheeling, attacking half back role that many thought he would. He's being asked to do a job and his selection chances hinge on whether he is doing that job well enough. For a guy who is in his second year of footy and missed a chunk of last year, I'm pretty happy with where is at.

The way he has been talked up the whole summer made it sound like he was a pretty close to a spot, just taking longer to find his his feet at this level. Might be better to bring him in for injury later in the season, don't see that he adds anything extra that Adcock, Golby, Hanley and Harwood already do.

If Karnezis can get 20+ possessions he's in my team.

Cornelius' form so far is too good to leave him out.

Leuenberger looked too rusty. I would rather play Longer until Leuey regains his mojo.

Docherty seems to be doing all the kick ins, so it wouldn't be a very good preparation if he was left out.

If he can keep his player quiet I think they might be happy to play him to fast track his development.

Martin is much more aggressive and energetic than Lisle.

That in itself is a worry.

Personally, I couldn't be more uninspired by either of Martin and Lisle, particularly Martin and to be honest, I found Dion Scott and Trent Bartlett more inspiring.

I really hope the coaches can put a rocket up the pair. Neither seem that particularly imposing and need to develop that hardness and aggression that Ben Hudson was renowned last season. In other words, they seem 'soft' to me. Even Patton and Cameron look more imposing and aggressive than our pair.

I understand why we recruited the pair, but the reason I have Lisle ahead of Martin is purely on forward line play. IMO Lisle is the more natural and talented, however I give the edge to Martin in the ruck. However, once Leuey gets going and playing large portions of the game in the ruck, I'd be happier with Lisle picking up the balance.

Let's not say things we can't take back...

I wouldn't trust it too much. Some of the stats coming out of champion data are pretty elementary. I haven't seen how they actually rank individual players. I'd imagine it tries to measure the list 25-30 deep not 40 deep. Last year in particular we had a ton of players that played around 8 games and I'm sure that messes with the stats a bit. Moreover, stats in the AFL have few predictive qualities, I think the possession stat in general can be really misused and does not account for a players impact on the field. Look at the round 22 game against the dogs, their midfield smashed us in most of the statistical categories but we won by 10 goals. Champion data was smart to get in early and create a company that is making a fair amount of money but I question their data analysis and ranking systems.

My team for round 1:

B:Golby Merrett Patfull
HB:Adcock Maguire McGrath
C: Redden Moloney Hanley
HF: Zorko Brown Rockliff
FF:Cornelius Martin Green
Foll: Leuenberger Raines Rich
Bench: Karnezis Bewick Lester sub: Black

Emg: Yeo, Longer, Beams, Docherty, Harwood, Polec, Lisle, Mayes, Polkinghorne and Crisp.

Presuming Black is fit start him as the sub to find some touch.

Leading up to round 1 I thought we had 16 players who were comfortably in our best 22 with 6 places open. Based on the NAB cup and current form I see:

Golby - Merrett - Patfull
??? - Maguire - Adcock
Hanley - Rich - Karnezis
Zorko - Brown - Bewick
McGrath - Martin - Cornelius
Leuenberger - Rocky - Redden
Black - Moloney - Raines
Green

Bewick - monstrous work rate, difficult match up in the forward line, proven goal kicker, in form
Cornelius - Strong marking 3rd tall more than capable of functioning as a KF, improved work rate + second efforts
Karnezis - Large, powerful mid who racks up the possessions and generally uses well, dangerous up forward
Green - Small forward capable of running through the midfield, constantly creates opportunities when he is near the ball all across the ground
Martin - Athletic, exciting and currently the top candidate for the R/KF role

The last role (???) is the HBF and currently I think Yeo, Polkinghorne and Doc are the candidates. Currently I would pick Yeo; composed, quick and athletic, ball carrier who uses it well.
I would use the exact same description for Doc, but I think on current form, Yeo is slightly ahead. Polks offers seniority and composure; has performed well in defense over the preseason but I think has less upside than the other two. In saying that I expect to see Polkinghorne in the side and would not be surprised if is at the expense of another bolded listed player.

One player I'm really not sure of is Longer. He has been great over the preseason but has been playing in a role almost certainly earmarked for another player (Leuie). He really hasn't been trialled up forward this pre-season and knowing how much we value versatility amongst our ruck department, it's possible he was simply being given experience competing amongst AFL quality rucks and won't come into contention for selection until deeper in the season. Whatever the case, his progress has been positive.

Nice team.

This is how I see it....

Golby - Merrett - Patfull
Yeo - Maguire - Adcock
Hanley - Rich - Karnezis
Zorko - Brown - Bewick
McGrath - Martin - Cornelius
Leuenberger - Rocky - Redden
Black - Moloney - Raines
Green

4 possibles, the rest seem to be pretty set now....Ace, Karnezis and Martin seem pretty set for Rd 1 unless something happens.

Black may miss early, maybe Beams or Lester in.

Yeo I'd like to see in, but feel it may go to Polks. Lester also a solid option, Doc might have to wait.

Leuey might not come up, then Longer gets a go.

McGrath needs to pull his finger out.

Just my 2c.

B: Adcock Merrett Lester
HB: Golby Patfull Docherty
C: Hanley Moloney Redden
HF: Zorko Brown McGrath
F: Green Martin Cornelius
R: Longer Rockliff Rich

I: Karnezis, Beams, Raines
Sub: Bewick

Exclusions:

Black - probably won't be fit
Leuenberger - let him build some form up first
Harwood ad Yeo - unlucky
Maguire - team balance
Polkinghorne - overtaken
Crisp and Polec - good depth

It's not a particularly tall team, so it would probably require a bit of tweaking if we played West Coast for example. There's not a lot in it - the few posts above all make good sense.

Here's my updated version

B: Adcock Merrett Golby
HB: Patfull Maguire Yeo
C: Hanley Rockliff Redden
HF: Zorko Brown Bewick
F: Green Martin Cornelius
R: Longer/Luey Rich Moloney

I: Karnezis, Beams,Raines
Sub: Docherty

Very unlikely to happen but i have actually left McGrath out my team, cant base everything on preseason form I know, but I think he is struggling a touch and might need a week or two in the 2's

Also wanted to ensure that the Docherty, Beams, and Yeo are in to get as many games into the legs as possible. (all three will be guns imo)

Lester, Harwood, Polks all in contention as well you would think, perhaps at the expense of Doc/Yeo

btw, assuming Blackie doesnt get up
