I compare him to Kennedy. Really good contested ball winner and while he's not as creative as Cripps he is an accurate hand baller and has a lot of time when he has the ball. Real gut runner who drags his team over the line. There's been some very questionable assessments of him in this thread from people who haven't watched much of him.

I'm not into it. I was coached once upon a time by ex Demon and Saint Rod Keogh and he told me I'll have the ball 15-25 times a game and it's what I'm doing for the other 100 minutes a game that counts. You won't get that sort of perspective on a player from a YouTube clip.

Brodie, personally I have him in the top three along with Setterfield and McCluggage. Has made a good impression in his interviews from what I've been told and is the sort of player you can build a midfield around.

I haven't watched anywhere near as much under 18's as I did last year, but watching him as an underaged player I thought he was going to be a top 5 selection, he looked all class. Obviously hasn't come on this year which isn't a good sign.

I'll have to watch a few of his games more closely but I still wouldn't mind him at our second pick. SOS rookie listed his brother, not much of an indicator I know, but family life/upbringing does play a part in recruitment so there is probably a tick there.

From what I hear, he is of good character, but also needs to be judged on football ability.

If he is rated, in a similar vein as others in a range, whether it be 25 or at 48, then being of good character would help his chances of being one of our targets

Can any draft watchers compare Brodie with other highly rated contested kids of past years? Thinking Ziebell, Cunnington, Vlastuin, Brayshaw and the like.

I do wonder about scope for improvement with these types.

I to am a fan of Garth, he shows a certain knack playing the position where I think his upside could be a Brian Lake type footballer

JMG I also like he shows a desperation when he's up and about

Yeah Brodie is a gun. He was big time in the TAC cup GF.
Almost dragged the bushies across the line him self.
What could have been if he didn't go off half way through the 2nd, with a broken nose.
In the end Sandy just had to many gun players.

Yeah definitely. Really good midfielder on both the inside and outside. Great size and skill.

Surely this is ok, too? He would effectively replace Rowe when ready?

With Weitering, Marchbank, Docherty. Plus Simmo for a couple more seasons to be replaced by Byrne we would have the interceptiest rebounding backline that ever intercepted and rebounded.

It would be like the star wars defense system that they spoke about in the US for decades...

Add in a small lockdown defender and a tall lockdown defender and it's perfect, no?

My thoughts are that SOS continues to be the ethical solid and honest list manager during draft. Pick 5 bid on setterfield. Nothing to lose here as he is likely rated top 5 anyway should gws not match. Bombers won't because they would rather nominate McGrath if they were going down that road, but more likely straight to clug. Lions and gc won't because they don't touch each other's academies. Then if gws do match we take either Taranto or Brodie as I can't see either being an abject failure. Personally leaning towards Brodie.
Pick 25 would be great if florent still available. unlikely though

This draft is very even after the top 6 and stretches deep into the 3rd/4th rounds. Interesting we acquired, more picks in the 4th round.

Yes, it is very conceivable of picking up a very good player at 48.

Happy to see Sin back up my feelings on Brodie. His perceived kicking issues are being exagerrated. Taranto is one of my favourites but I'd take Brodie ahead of him. I just can't unsee a few fumbles from Tim while Brodie's great hands in tight are a stand out feature.

Teams are happy to loosely defender a player like Frost when his side is trying to get it out of the backline, so the ball ends up in his hands and make him kick it. Result turnover/contest. We want up upgrade on Rowe ( and his ball use is much beter than a Frost or what I think JMG will become) not more of the same.

Will Brodie will have to get a drink drinking charge for him to slide to us at pick 5. Would be thrilled to get him but expect him to go Brisbane at 3. If not then Gold Coast at 4 after losing Prestia and Jaegar. Taranto also gone at 4. Funny feeling we need to select from Ainsworth or Drew. Petrevski-Seton there but suspect we back ourselves in on the Pickett trade as our line breaker/outside mid.

In years to come, when we reanalyze the 2016 draft, we will get the first indication as to the skill set of SOS as a recruiter.

My formula, to determine a "Pass" mark for a draft is based on games played for mid round picks in the first 3 rounds:

Example:

Pick 9 - 150 Games
Pick 27 - 100 Games
Pick 45 - 50 Games

More games above these indicators is a bonus, not to mention 4th round + picks. Other factors to consider is quality of games.

I really look forward to seeing who we take with the 4 picks we have in the 3rd and 4th rounds. I hope we don't take the easy option of acquiring DFA with these picks

I agree , although if you pick up a DFA and they play 50+ games , isn't that a win too?

Yep. The main Knoc on Taranto is he's field kicking. But I'm more worried about how fumbly he can be.
Nowhere near as clean by hand as Brodie

It appears SOS might think so. He has stacked a few picks up for the latter rounds. That doesn't necessarily mean he will use them all though, more so that he is prepared should there be players that slip through to those picks. How many players slip through will depend on how many picks he uses and ultimately how many more delistings he will need to make by the cut off date.
