Were there melts when we drafted Talia? I followed the draft pretty closely and was very happy when he fell to us. He was supposed to go much earlier. Pretty much no one predicted he'd be around at our pick.
He wasn't supposed to go "much earlier". Almost all of the phantoms had him going to Carlton, with the pick immediately before our own. Carlton selected Kane Lucas, and Talia fell (unexpectedly) into our laps.

There were a few melts over Talia's selection. Nobody questioned his talent - that was never an issue. The reason was that nobody could understand why the club had drafted yet another KPD, when we already had Rutten, Bock, and Davis running around. Little did we know that Bock & Davis would both defect to the expansion clubs, leaving us short in an area where we previously had an abundance. Then, as now, the list was crying out for a quality midfielder - and Rendell picked another #@$&*ing KPD!

Yawn

It was speculated by Brett Anderson and the day before not a week before

Time to move on , it's not a big deal
I agree it's not a big deal, but I do think Sanders' position is correct. Surprised it met with such strong and impassioned resistance, that's all.

No, and it's not a technicality either that's a cop out. It was just flat out wrong

It wasn't even strong enough to be a rumour, the one tweet from BA doesn't even suggest it's going to happen. It couldn't be less committal.

No one was even predicting it a day before, that's not a rumour

To put it into context, BA's own phantom has himmelberg going at 37 after port Adelaide bids for him.

Far out guys get over it. It was clearly suggested/rumoured/predicted whatever. I also distinctly remember it very late in the piece and a few guys have provided evidence.
Enough said.

Buckenara:

THIS year’s draft is a deep one in terms of talent but it’s very even talent and anything could happen on the night.

It is full of midfielders and forwards and there are also some good rebound defender types but key position players are going to be a bit hard to come by in this year’s crop.

There aren’t a lot of ruckmen in the field either — there are a couple of developing types and a few who have played at state-league level but there isn’t a lot. So those clubs searching for either a developing or back-up ruckman might find it a little bit difficult.

It wouldn’t surprise me if my rankings are off in areas, even by about 20, that’s what I mean by how even this year’s draft is. It’s just one of those years where beauty might be in the eye of the beholder.
If you approached clubs and asked the recruiters to write down their top 50 players, I suspect they will all be in different orders, particularly after pick No.20 and even potentially after pick No.15.

This has a political smell to it .......gee AFL, it wasn't that hard ....delaying for a reason ??

How many picks have they got in these rounds (1st, 2nd)? This year.
Have they loaded up.
If they have and lose them it's probably something the AFL can't stomach.
So I predict heel dragging by AFL and penalty for next year so they can plan for it best as possible for minimum impact.

GWS have the following picks:
1st round - 2, 15
2nd round - 37, 39
3rd round - 45, 52, 55, 57, 58
4th round - 59

That's 10 picks in total. They have traded, retired, or delisted 11 players. The only player they added to their list is/was Deledio. The maths adds up - they haven't loaded up the way they did last year.

Yep. Big time. We already had Rutten and Bock. The year before we'd taken Davis and Will Young as KPDs, as well as other talls McKernan and Lee. Compared to now, we were really top heavy, with guys like Hentschel, Moran, Walker, Tippett, Craig, Stevens, Sellar. Everyone screamed we already had too many big guys and needed mids. Recruiters said he was too good to pass up. They were right.

Staggering that Jonty Scharenberg doesn't even make that top 50 list. Played some pretty decent league footy this year and was All Australian.
But the important thing would be that he makes it to 43 or failing that 53, :D
But yea Very surprised he was not named top 50, It seem some just don't rate the SA boys.

I wouldn't normally be the one sticking up for Sanders but at least he went back and did some digging to support his case. Not saying that he is necessarily correct but you seem to be the one relying on opinions/memories, not him.
Sanders posted about 10 links proving his case. You better start searching for some evidence to back up your claims or they mean nothing!
Are you serious? He posted some links where Himmelberg wasn't mentioned and that's proof he wasn't? It's like saying Tom Cruise has never been in a movie and naming 10 movies he wasn't in as 'proof'.

Guess you already feel stupid after WW and DiT found proof he was. You deserve it.

So even banning from 1st round only. Would be good. Not going to happen though is it?
Some team could nab an academy player possibly.

They're not going to lose pick 2, that was gained via trade, more than likely they'd lose pick 15 and ?37 as these were their natural picks.

At this stage I suspect the AFL are hoping GWS will just hand in the picks, save them having to make a tough decision.

To me Mitch McGovern sounds like the best comparison for Hayward but that is only based on what I have read about him.
Pretty close too it, certainly as a forward. Mitch is a bit bigger, Hayward a bit more agile, hence the hope Hayward can play through the middle.

Both have similar weapons , not the worst comparison

Hayward shorter , to me he looks like he can play mid from the burst he had there in draft all stars game and has history of playing midfield before this year

So now if people do a search of last years pre-draft discussion ......unequivocal proof that Himmelberg was discussed extensively
WW, did you include a post of your own in the list of proof? That's pretty funny :-)

Here is an article that said the worst case scenario was that North might bid for him:
Himmelberg is an athletic 19-year-old tall forward who loves to push up and back down the ground. He’s quick off the mark, and gets plenty of shots on goal. He moved to Canberra on his own this year, so that he could play for Eastlake and remain a part of the Giants Academy. A few clubs have interviewed him, and the Giants would be expecting a bid to come for him at some point. Tall forwards aren’t easy to find so it could come very early: some are predicting the end of the first round. Let’s use that as a worst-case example and say North Melbourne bid for Himmelberg with their first pick, 17. http://aflnswact.com.au/blog/2015/11/19/meet-the-nswact-academy-draft-prospects/
Here is an article commenting that it was a surprise:
Harrison Himmelberg is a Giants Academy player who was bid on by the Crows at their second pick, which GWS matched to take him at pick 16. Himmelberg is a forward with good athleticism and excellent marking ability. His kicking skills have been somewhat inconsistent throughout the season and Himmelberg is not without his flaws, with a few things that he needs to work on to be able to make it at AFL level. However there is plenty to work with and Himmelberg was bid on by the Adelaide Crows earlier than many experts expected come draft night.

Anyway, does anyone think that we expected to get him? I had the distinct feeling that we would have been surprised if the Giants did not match. Felt like a strategic bid at the time.

What players will attract those types of bids this year? The more players get bid on before our pick the better.

WW, did you include a post of your own in the list of proof? That's pretty funny :)

r.
Only because i knew i raised Himmelberg, so that's how i searched ......hardly think there's any cudos for raising his name i would have thought ??
