Never seen a draft like this where the media are so totally clueless with only 3 days to go.
Very even - no 2 clubs will agree on ranking

Anyway, does anyone think that we expected to get him? I had the distinct feeling that we would have been surprised if the Giants did not match. Felt like a strategic bid at the time.
Not sure about that. GWS had already burned a lot of points on other players, earlier in the draft. Ogilivie's actions at the time (from memory he bolted to the lectern) were not those of a man who expected GWS to match the bid. I think they were a little bit surprised, and definitely disappointed, when GWS chose to match the bid on Himmelberg.

It makes no sense to think of it as a "strategic bid", as Adelaide had no way of benefiting. This was Adelaide's last "live" selection in the draft, so they had nothing to gain by forcing GWS to burn points from later picks.

I think it was a genuine bid, on a player they rated as the next best available at that point in the draft. When that fell through, they went with Doedee, who was the next player on the list after Himmelberg.

Does anyone know if the AFL have revamped the bidding system after GWS was able to essentially bid up to 3 first round draft picks? That made draft night a huge joke.
Yes, they have. Clubs now only have as many draft picks as they have list vacancies. No stockpiling of later round picks.

Last year GWS used 14x draft picks, but only emerged with 4 players! Those shenanigans are no longer permitted.

This year GWS have 10 list vacancies, and 10 draft selections. If they bid on players, then their later picks will slide all the way to the rear of the draft, and they'll be making lots of selections with picks in the 90s.

Of course, we had no other live picks - so it had to be a real pick. I remember there was confusion about whether it was being matched, and you're right we were kind of sprinting to get the paper work in :-)

I am close to identifying our Pick 13. Everyone agrees that we want/need a midfielder so I am checking all the key position players ranked between 20 and 50 in the phantom drafts.

In the second half of last season Tom Doedee was playing much better footy than Wayne Milera in the Twos. The same old suspect(s) were still going on and on about Tom but barely a word about Wayne.

I expect to see both Tom and Wayne playing in the AFL this year.

Big call! :p

No reason why Milera wouldn't be in the side next year given he managed to play 8 game this season and showed some promising signs in those games. Pre season to help become stronger and build up a tank should hopefully see him put his hand up.

Doedee is tough to read, certainly when I haven't really seen him play yet but I feel like he has more competition for a spot in his side compared to what Milera might have or at least Milera more than likely offers more to our side that we're currently lacking vs Doedee. All that being said, would want to hope as a non KP player that he'd be pushing for selection next year and play a few games at a minimum.

Big call! :p

I was referring to the Footy Year which goes from Day 1 of pre-season until the last Saturday in September (or October or whatever) :D.

I expect Doedee to line up at half back in round 1 and have a fantastic season.

and then request a trade back to Geelong..............

if we take Cox we're really stacking that sort of type.

makes the decision to carry Thommo all last year even stranger IMO.

Mentioning Hugh McCluggage to be again interviewed by Essendon later this week so not written in stone yet that McGrath goes No.1. Again some unseen footage of the players.

Essendon are just milking some positive spotlight

I think Ogilvie has proven himself, whereas Rendell is vastly overrated.

TBH Hamish hadn't proven himself yet but that's not because he has picked duds his crop of picks haven't been around to prove themselves look at Rendells draft picks and tell me he is overrated and at what number he picked them at

Explain the first bit more DD?

You mean outside mids Milera and Cox ?

We may have added some but we still lack quality in that regard and speed around the ball

Not sure Cox is answer though from brief bits of seen of him ( only seen him live once )
