Only who I think we're a snowball's chance of getting.

Doing the happy dance of draft success:
Griffin Logue. Highly unlikely but if I had the number 1 pick I'd take him. Will be an unstoppable mid in the Koutafides mould.
Will Brodie. Only a chance if GC decides they don't want him. WC, North and Sydney already sorted for his type so could fall.
Daniel Venables. This guy's a match winner that loves big moments. They're hard to find.

Yeah sure ok, why not:
Jarrod Berry. Can't ask much more of him. Just not sure how high the ceiling is. Safe and solid pick.
Jy Simpkin. Would be in the first category if we didn't take Milera last year.
Will Hayward. Star or meh. Hard to say at this stage.
Cedric Cox. Some solid late mail but after stocking up with Milera, Hampton and Seedsman last year, just doesn't make sense. Except that he has more potential upside than anyone else in the draft.
Tim English. Think he'll be more a huge utility of the Lobb/Blivacs type than a ruckman.
Alex Witherden Composure. Can't rate it highly enough.
Sam Powell Pepper. Everyone's dropped off him but Haggis loves ultra competitive players.
Shai Bolton. Boom or bust.
Jordan Ridley. The smokey. Could be something.

Please no. Just don't:
Jordan Gallucci. I feel sick every time I read his name linked to us.
Todd Marshall. Smells like James Sellar.
Oliver Florent. Why train a guy for 2 years before he goes back to Melbourne.
Josh Battle. Vanilla Ice.
Isaac Cumming. Why?

Tomorrow's Heroes: Will Brodie, the midfield bull with confidence

Tomorrow's Heroes: Will BrodieThe big-bodied midfielder finds plenty of the footy and is tipped to be a top-ten pick

Will Brodie in action for the Murray Bushrangers during the TAC Cup Grand Final

WHEN Will Brodie stated earlier this year that he wanted to be the No.1 draft pick, the popular sentiment from recruiters was that they liked his confidence.

Whether he got there or not was probably not the point; the competitive and driven midfielder had set himself a task and wasn't afraid to tell people he wanted to reach it.

That attitude sums up Brodie as a player: he wants to be the best and will do whatever it takes to get there. He has been a standout for the Murray Bushrangers over the past two years and at national level the past three seasons as an under-16 and under-18 prospect.

Brodie did his best work this season in the first half of the year, and struggled with ankle soreness towards the end of the season that ruled him out of the NAB All Stars game and from testing at the NAB AFL Draft Combine the following week.

WHY-THEY-SHOULD-PICK-HIM.jpg

The midfielder is a ball-winner. At the championships for Vic Country he averaged 20 disposals (more than half contested) and seven clearances a game. He pulled in almost the exact same numbers in eight games for the Bushrangers, proving his consistent efforts in the engine room.

Brodie has proved himself in all the big games he has played in over the past two years. He was Australia's best player when the level one NAB AFL Academy played in New Zealand last year, and impressed as a bottom-ager last season in patches for Vic Country.

Earlier this year he was again the academy's best player in its two games against VFL sides – averaging 21 disposals in the two games – and then he was named an All Australian at the championships. His ability to put his head in at the stoppages and come out with the ball is almost unsurpassed, and he's adept at shooting out handballs and getting the ball his side's way while being tackled.

Brodie's size (188cm) makes him an appealing prospect for clubs, too, given he uses his frame to break through traffic and is also a nice overhead mark.

Clubs have at times questioned Brodie about his kicking efficiency, because he does have a tendency to bomb it forward rather than use finesse. However, he did rank well for disposal by foot at the championships for Vic Country and had an efficiency of 70 per cent.

That is probably the main knock, and he missed a few gettable goals in Murray's Grand Final loss that would have made his day look a lot better. There isn't too much else to worry about – he doesn't have explosive pace but is quick enough from contest to contest.

You can see why some recruiters liken Brodie to Sydney midfielder Josh Kennedy. The Murray Bushrangers prospect uses his size and stature to physically impose himself on contests and be a distributor.

Was discussed for a long time as a No.1 contender but probably sits a bit further back now. Gold Coast has an interest and he could be one of their top-10 picks, while Sydney may also look at him. There's a chance he gets through to Adelaide's No.13.

There shouldn't be any surprises about the way Brodie plays. He's tough and competitive and will play regular senior football next year. Brodie is the bull of this year's midfield group and has a consistency to his performances.

I would think the clubs with the top ten picks would probably be asked to give 3 or 4 names who they have in the mix for their first pick without specifically naming their No.1 choice......that's why I think this Cumming to Adelaide is a bit premature as that would indicate sides inside the top ten also have some interest...unless of course there going to bring the whole of the 1st round up on stage this year which I just can't see.
As far as I am aware it is still only the top 10 that will be presented on stage so you're right, Cummings getting an invite has nothing to do with Adelaide. That list of names would be some very valuable information to a team like GC who have multiple pick in the top 10 if they could get their hands on it. You would hope that whoever is receiving those lists is trustworthy. If the AFL want to cover all bases, all of the top 10 clubs should have to nominate the same number of players as their pick because no one can be certain of what is going to happen before them.

It goes to show how much variance there is between the draftees in the recruiters eyes that there are so many players who have been invited. If we assume that Essendon, GWS and Brisbane all have a combination of McGrath, McLuggage and Ainsworth/Torranto then it means that between the other 4 clubs they have a combination 16 players making up the next 7 places in the top 10. I wonder how many players would be invited if GC only had 1 pick and there were 3 extra teams putting in a top 10 list - there might be 30 players invited.

Cummings has a brother in Adelaide currently, as a student teacher in a high school. I don't think it means he is our pick, but worth noting.

So what makes you rate him highly WW? What can you potentially see in him?

Knightmare has us taking

15 - Jordan Gallucci
50 - Oscar McInerney (22 year old athletic ruckman from Casey Scorpions)
58 - Patrick Lipinski
67 - Liam Baker (small, inside midfielder)
80 - Ben Jarman
Geezus I hope he's wrong with those first 2 picks, especially McInerney. Rookie maybe and even then I'd prefer 21 year old Rowan Marshall as Ruck/KPP depth.

Personally haven't seen McInerney, so can't comment. Sounds like he's Dee or Docker bound, though.

Don't want Baker.

There seems to be a general thought process around the AFL/blog sites that we don't have anyone if Sauce went down. Either they just don't know about O'Brien, or just see he only played 2 games and was on the rookie list and assume he's not good enough. I wouldn't be opposed to taking another ruck as a rookie, but not spending our 2nd pick on one.

I like good clean hands .....he has speed, and a good kick ......look at his video's and under pressure he's composed and makes good decisions

Now ....that's a sample of 3 matches .....very small sample, but the differences in these guys is minute, and in the eye of the beholder .....to me he looks similar to a young Ryan Griffen

Berry on the other hand, and this is no offense to Bicks because it's his boy .....but watch his videos and under pressure he coughs the ball up ......didn't see that in Cumming, or Venables / Brodie

Gws will probably match by the time it comes for your pick with Issac (unless you leap early with 13)

Doesn't this suggest he's likely to be bid on in the top 10? Isn't only the prospective top 10 players that get invited, so Cumming getting invited would suggest he'd be gone before our pick.
There's 18 or 19 lads invited from what I can gather...that doesn't go into 10? Their just covering all bases IMO.

This was what I was asking when I suggested prospective top 10 picks, only the clubs in the top 10 give the AFL an idea of their prospective picks, those guys get invited. Hence Cummings getting invited suggests a top 10 club has expressed their interest late and has nothing to do with us.
