Heading into the draft with picks 45, 67 & 71 and getting James Worpel (All-Aus-Mid), Dylan Moore (All-Aus-Mid) and Jackson Ross who as reported possesses one of the biggest upsides in the 2017 draft pool who can move very well around the ground as an athletic half forward/wingman, where he can be damaging on the outside and hit the scoreboard, and who can become a posible Smith replacement in a few years time.

I personally think the club did a good job tonight.

Edit: The final draft verdict of all clubs on the AFL media website:

Entering the draft so late, the Hawks would have to be extremely pleased with their haul of players. Graeme Wright and his recruiting team nailed their selections. – Ben Guthrie

Generally reports say all clubs nailed their selections on draft night, its a few years down the track you know how you went.

Only glanced at the YouTube highlights but haven't been this non plussed about our picks ever. None of them will play seniors 2018. Worpell the closest but has flaws that may not be fixed.

Why so dark and gloomy. I like it better when I mentally add O'Meara added to this list of selections. They all have elite attributes which is all you can ope for which such late picks I suppose.

I'm probably most excited about Ross, as I read about our interest in him months ago, and he seems like the kind of endurance tall we need.
Could be an interesting selection, focused on school this year instead of football and beforehand football wasn't his main focus, showed a bit when he played. About the best you can hope for when you're at the gates to the rookie draft.

I had had about 15 beers and was tired and emotional! On another review this morning feeling more positive about them.

It will be interesting to see if the Hawks target a KPP or ruck/forward in the rookie draft bearing in mind Vickery, Fitzpatrick and Surman have all departed.
I suspect we will be looking to draft or trade in a tall in the 2018 draft but may look for an "insurance policy"in the rookie draft.
Possibly the rumour about Close may eventuate or we will look at Olango.

Worpel has a kicking eff of 43. This will need to improve very quickly if he wants to play for Clarko

His field kicking actually isn't horrendous and he usually hits targets when given time. But when he bulldozes through a centre clearance (and he does this just as well as any of the mids taken in the top 10) he usually just throws it onto the boot and kicks in hope. It's not a Langford scenario where he can't nail kicks under no pressure, but more his first instinct is simply to dispose of the ball.

A lot of his development will be centered around taking a second or two to assess options when he bursts out of congestion. If he learns this skill effectively then I honestly think he'll be an elite inside mid. If he can't then he'll go the way of Hallahan.

But one thing this kid does have is spirit. Has work ethic in spades and will constantly try to improve. It's that type of attitude that can really make a player.

Can’t believe how much excitement there is over the draft (I get caught up in it too).

Two week ago it was the shittest draft of all time.

Now every club has landed superstars on every pick.
Yippee!

Hey fellas can any of you give us some background on Sam Switkowski, it's hard to get a feel for a player from a 3 min highlight reel

Thanks in advance :thumbsu:
Good late pick. Would have liked the Hawks to give him a rookie spot at least. Best of luck to him in the west.

Ball winning bull with average disposal by foot under pressure. Great hands though.

I reckon Freo reached on this one. Thought he was a rookie chance.
Good VFL player, but not sure he will cut it at AFL level.

No way that we didn’t know that when we selected him so it’s obviously something we believe we can fix.

His clearance work is very exciting, but I saw him doing a lot of the work himself (in his highlights). When he realises that a clearance can be achieved as part of a team, he’ll settle down a bit & not think that his only option is to smash it forward under (real or perceived) pressure.

*just re-watched some highlights & Worpel will benefit immensely from having quality outside players around him; in particular, guys coming off the back of the square with pre-designated running lines.

Once Worpel knows (not: has to find) where his mates will be & when, his disposal efficiency will go through the roof.

I read recently in an article, cant remember which site it was exactly, but we apparently said we have no more interest in Tony Olango, just as we also said we don't in Devlin Brereton and James Langford.

Thanks guys appreciate the feedback, TBH I'd never heard of him before

Always interesting to see how the later picks go

Has pace. Can win the ball hard at it can tackle. Kicking needs improving. Exciting player at VFL level. Wish him all the best at freo

We have another chance at noon Monday to nominate them ahead of the rookie draft I believe.
