Could it be more than that though?

We have 38 primary listed players (including Vickery who is retired but after lodgement deadlines).
We have 3 Category A Rookies (Glass, Hanrahan and Cousins)
We have 1 Category B Rookie (Nash).

Based on my reading, wouldn't that mean we can squeeze in 3 more rookies as well as 2 other Category B rookies. If we commit to Willsmore and get CJ as a Category B rookie - then we have the possibility for 2 more players to be rookied?

Happy to be wrong on any of this - I am not a list number guru like some on the board hence my question before.
If there is no bid for CJ, then he goes to Cat B.
Guess it's 2 live picks AND Willsmore then.

Buckenara had all three in his top 40 pre-draft...Worpel at 30, Moore at 33 and Ross at 38

It's all moot, but it means we haven't picked long-shots. We've got to be happy with what we got from our hand.

And when Jaeger comes good...and Hanrahan...

EDIT: AFL Draft Central all had them in the top 38 as well...yay!

Apologies if someone has posted this - I am a little behind in reading BF last few weeks. But this is Gary B's summary for Herald Sun yesterday.

Not too bad...

HAWTHORN

WHO THEY PICKED

45. James Worpel: Midfielder, 185cm, 84kg, 18 years, Geelong Falcons

67. Dylan Moore: Midfielder/small forward, 175cm, 66kg, 18 years, Eastern Ranges

71. Jackson Ross: Midfielder/forward, 192cm, 75kg, 18 years, Haileybury College/Eastern Ranges

BUCKENARA SAYS: Everyone will say I’m biased but the Hawks have done it again. To have just three picks so late in the draft and to come away with Worpel, Moore and Ross, it’s a very successful night for Hawthorn. I had each of those three ranked in my top 50 — Worpel at 30, Moore at 33 and Ross at 38 — and I’m very surprised they lasted so deep into the draft. Worpel is a manic competitor and there’s no doubt that’s what Alastair Clarkson and Graham Wright love about him. I know from my time at Hawthorn that’s one of the traits the club looks for. He can come in and play next year because he’s already got a solid body. Ross is a bit of a project player — he has an elite tennis background and was late to footy so there is huge upside because he’s got a lot of natural talent and his athleticism makes him an exciting prospect. Moore could also be given a taste of senior footy in 2018.

THE VERDICT: I rate Hawthorn as one of the winners of the draft given they have picked up potentially three very good players with later picks who I rated highly before the draft.

Thanks for that mate! I was trying to get behind the paywall to read that, but couldn't.

Surely there’s no bidding system in the rookie draft?

That seems preposterous.

Do you know if James Langford nominated?
Will have to go looking.

Edit: typical of the AFL site to have no viewable list of nominations. Which was actually there prior to the National draft.

If you go to the draft tracker on afl site there is an icon which lists the full draft nominations list - Devlin Brereton isn’t listed here so can only assume that he didn’t nominate

Found it on the non-mobile site.

Langford not on there either.

Hawks have 39 on the primary list including Vickery and four rookies.

That's 43 out of 47
Willsmore is one pick
CJ is another
That leaves two live picks if we go to 47

We have two live Cat A picks, excluding Willsmore. If in the course of the rookie draft, someone bids on CJ, we automatically match with the next Cat A pick (not sure what that means if it's prior to our last pick (already committed to Willsmore) or after our last pick). It's only if no-one bids on CJ in the normal Rookie draft that he slips onto our Cat B list.

That reads like we have to keep one Cat A spot open just in case. BUt what if we take player x as 1st pick, Willsmore as second pick, no-one has yet nominated CJ and we pass on 3rd pick, expecting to put him on the Cat B list. Can we re-enter the draft to take him as Cat A if some club nominates him after we pass? Or are we forced to lose him because we passed. What if we filled all three CatA and Cat B was our next available?

My head hurts.

38 on senior now?

Started with 39.

Lost 5 - Hodge, Gibson, Willsmore (to rookie), Stewart, Hartung

Gained 4 - Worpel, Moore, Ross, Impey

Am I maths good?
