1. We might not finish last and even with live trading, getting the best player, particularly if there's a standout, is going to be difficult if you don't have the first pick.

2. It isn't all that common that the best player at this stage is the best player at draft time.

So much water to flow under the bridge to be shutting down conversations by saying that a draft is "all about" a particular player.
So out of curiosity when do you become 'locked into' a player/s that you would like the club to draft if you do? Personally this comes around the national champs for me and I will usually have a small list. However whilst you watch this years crop you keep an eye out on next years as well. I understand your sentiments about not being close minded per se about a particular player 18months out but good on Briztoon for being so clear on his choice and if you read his posts he does lock in earlier than others. But Rankine is special in the Wingard/Cyril model so why not go early on him I say. Me personally I'll wait as most others do.

Majority had Worpel penciled in as this years pick 1 last year.

Whilst Rankine looks special, so have a lot of others before him. Would have to think he is a top 3 pick but there is a lot of water to go under the bridge.

Guys can you comment on Izak Rankine please.

What type of player is he. How does he rate talent wise. Who does he play like. Where does he project to play in the short and long term.

Where would you rate/draft him if he was in this years draft. Where does he rate in regards to next years talent.

Cheers.

Quigley and myself not good enough for you? ;)

lol you guys are more than welcome to comment. I did think of tagging Quigley, but seeing as he has been very low key, I didn't want to disturb him.

Feel free to offer up a more educated view than myself.

Jack Lukosius will be pick 1 IMO. Rankine will be thereabouts but to just add to this I don't see us finishing bottom.

Agree - Lukosius is the only player I'd have above Max King for next year. Is a star.

Bit like Chad Wingard for me - I haven't watched him as closely because he's a bottom ager and I've been a big fan of Jack Lukosius since the U16s.

Porject top 10, I think Chris has suggested he'd take him at 1. But I'd definitely have KPF Jack Lukosius and Max King ahead of him.

Would be in consideration for Pick 1 this year, but so would a fair chunk of the 2018 top five selections.

I don't recall anyone having Worpel in the discussion for the number one pick.

I think Brander and Ballenden were the two I remember being mentioned.

That's good for us as I don't see us finishing bottom and I would think with the gradual improvement of our younger brigade that we will finish with 6/7/8 wins meaning we will most probably have a pick in the 3-6 range next year.

To this year I am just so hopeful that our first 3 current picks are used on this years draftees. Our first 5 picks from last year look have shown some pleasing signs and trust the football department/recruitment team to identify another three (plus Ballenden) mid types to further bolster our squad. I am very much a realist but there is some light at the end of the tunnel/green shoots and hope the club keeps on the patient path that they've outlined. If trading is going to happen then the loss of Rocky or others to facilitate this isn't a problem for me.

We should trade our first pick this year for the first pick next year....

Lol. You post some funny things at times.

12 months ago, he was right up there talked about being the #1. Anyone who really rated Ballenden that high was either against the academies or seen something that those at club level didn't.

I like Worpel. He'll be an early pick. That kid is probably more well built than majority of the players on our list right now.

I'm a big fan of these next two. I expect them to feature early at this stage.

Andrew McPherson is one to keep an eye on. He's more a back flanker that rotates through the wing at this stage but should move onto the wing in a more permanent role next year. He's pretty exciting to watch and could go pretty high.

Luke Davies is another one who could rise up the board if his body holds up well enough. He's another big bodies inside midfielder type with smarts and decent skill. He just needs a clean run with injuries. He already stands at 188cm and will still have some growing to do.

^ From last year:

Worpel would be a bloody good pick up with our second or third pick.

McPherson is talented, had some injury problems this year. Type of player Fagan would love, but midfielder's will be our target this year.

Any good defensive oriented midfielders in the top 20?

I wouldn't lock in on a particular player because I simply don't have the knowledge that the professional recruiters have, let alone the amateurs we have here. I'll have preferences but I try to keep an open mind about individual players.

However, I do have strong views on list needs and draft strategy. I make my mind up on those aspects as the year progresses but particularly, in terms of the draft, after trade week has concluded and we know what our list actually looks like. Charlie Cameron is a potential strategy changer for me. Similarly, if we managed to trade for an up and coming mid, I'd think again about our draft strategy.

Having said that, if the club makes a drafting decision that isn't expected, I again try and keep an open mind. Even when a draft decision just doesn't make sense to me (Longer is a case in point), I think it's worth giving the club the benefit of the doubt. For every decision where I'm right and they are wrong on draftees, there are a bunch more where the club successfully selects a bloke that I didn't initially rate all that highly. I suspect Cedric may be the next one on that particular list.

The final point that I'd make is that I struggle to have an attachment to blokes who haven't joined the club. Until they are officially a Lion, they are just another name on a list to me.

I've only had Dow #1 for a while now...

FWIW, entirely possible Port lose two and of the last 3 games and miss the 8. Lose 2 of the 3 and with the right other teams winning they could probably drop as far as 11th. Hopefully Collingwood can beat them.

They'll win all 3

I feel a bit weird about this but............

Go PIES!!!!

Probably already mentioned a few times, but we'd be really backing in our retention program if we were to select Rayner.

Big party animal that loves the Melbourne lifestyle.

Did see these highlights of Rankine recently and was very impressed - haven't seen many highlights reels like this from underage players.

But as everybody has said, underage form is unreliable.

Been on the Dow bandwagon for ages now. Hopefully he finishes the year strongly but I hope not too well... Would break my heart to see us potentially lose him if we get pick 2 or 3. I already covered why I love the look of him in other posts but I had no idea he has won 3 BnF in a row. Consistent as well it seems. Paddy just ticks so many boxes it's not funny it's almost like he was made for us.

lol, I just spent the last hour watching player highlight clips from this years Champs. Dow, Worpel, LDU, Cerra, Rayner, Coffield, Constable. And then watched Rankine's highlights. I know Rankine is more of an outside player and he plays a different style to the others, but he just oozes class and his highlights clips leave the others in the shade.

I still have LDU ahead of Dow, Cerra, Worpel and Brayshaw. Coffield ahead of Constable. On talent, Rayner would be ahead of them all, but his endurance is the big question mark. Interesting that there's a general vibe does LDU love the game enough.

To be fair Rayner is a kid. Judge him on his endurance levels after a few seasons. Sometimes u just have to show faith and believe. His strenght of character, alone , will determine, his commitment to improve in areas he is currently deficient in. I believe he has what it takes to do so.

I'm not sure his endurance will ever be great enough to play enough midfield minutes. He either is unprofessional (you'd hope so in a way...) or he genetically is rubbish when it comes to his aerobic capacity. He's probably been playing footy for 10 years at least yet still is running 11s in the beep test? That's pathetic TBH. No place in modern AFL for blokes that can't run I'm afraid. Mathieson would run rings around him and he is a known poor runner and it shows on game day. Pass for mine.

Rankine is going to make some people look very silly when he plays AFL.
