The club would definitely have wanted to keep him, esp after Bruce (the other prominently promoted ACT guy left), as an inside mide he had plenty to give, our issue was probably just that we didn't lack for players for that role and thus wouldn't pay overs or promise spots onfield on promise.
I expect him to have a long and hopefully prosperous career at the saints, I think he will end up more valuable to them than Josh.

Good friend of mine has some verified links to the club. I pressed him for news on resignings this week.... very tight lipped but did say that he was certain we will only keep one of Kelly/smith his year- can't afford both

Kelly is the more valuable IMO. Hard to find his level of class - don't want to lose him.

My view, and it may be controversial, is that while Kelly is the better overall footballer, I think Dev has already spearheaded comebacks that have won us games.

Nice to see that after Buntine's ACL we have re-signed him until 2019, and would expect we will shortly do the same with Adam Kennedy as well

I agree, I reckon he will be on a heavily incentivised deal with pay for play heavily worked in.
He is a good club man, very popular, has his share of talent and is part of the blue collar fabric our star laden list is a little shy of.
Wish him a speedy recovery.
Kelly the better player. But I don't think he's 10 mil over 10 good, that is for your Ablett, Franklin, Bontempelli, Dangerfield types and he isn't on that level IMO.

Mind you, we won't be forking out anything like that.
Personally I wouldn't mind the club having a quiet word to Griffen about where they see him in 2018 and that it might be best if he didn't see out his contract and moved into an off field role at the club, but only if that means we are a better chance of holding onto all of Smith, Hopper and Kelly.

If Kelly decides to leave, and St Kilda would offer the Hawthorn 2017 1st round + Saints 2017 1st round + Saints 2018 1st round, what kind of player or pick might be deemed equitable to be packaged alongside Kelly? It looks like a top 5 + top 12 + top ~14, for Kelly + ????? (based on expected ladder positions).

Happy to see Matt Buntine sign on again. As someone said, more of a 'blue collar' player than a star, but a really solid player and bloke who fits in well at the club.
Really whittling down the OOC numbers, just the 6 now that would be 'must have' (Kelly, Smith, Hopper, Matt Kennedy, HH & Adam Kennedy).
