WALLSY’S JOY FOR EMBATTLED MID

CARLTON great Robert Walls has heaped praise on gun Blues midfielder Bryce Gibbs and his professional approach to footy this year.

After a trade to Adelaide couldn’t be negotiated, Gibbs has been outstanding since returning to the Blues this season, averaging a career-high 28.7 disposals and 14.3 contested possessions — ranked No. 1 at Carlton.

A few of our supporters need to read this article.

They owe us for the Whiley/Jaksch shimozzel don't they.
We really lost that one!

I try to look at that deal with a big picture type of view .
Maybe it helped push the club to the point of no return where something serious had to be done .
Exit : Malthouse/Rogers
Enter : Bolton/Silvagni
History may show that to be one of the greatest exchanges the club has ever made .

The other advantage being the significant amount of $ we have spare in the cap, and the willingness to effectively fill that with depth players.

There wouldn't be too many other clubs around at the moment (a) with the space in the cap we have, and (b) the willingness to almost mortgage off a list spot.

This is why I said earlier that our available TPP would be used as leverage in any deal this year.

Lol insert those 3 into our team and it really is outrageous how many ex GWS players we would have on our list.

I can see us being in 'pole' position at this stage...we have $$$ to throw around, an existing trading relationship with GWS, they possibly are mates with our ex GWS players and i reckon they would want to play for a coach like Bolton and can see we are an up and coming team.

Also we can basically guarantee them a best 22 spot, whereas at GWS they don't have that job security.

In terms of trading, i wonder if we'd be willing to give up a potentially really high draft pick like 2018 1st rounder, as part of a deal for all 3.
GWS want elite top end picks since their list is already so good. They paid overs to get pick #2 (Taranto) last year but they could afford to and would probably be happy to pay slight overs again.

Well then they shouldn't miss home should they?

So, basically out with the old in with the new and back these guys to be better?

Balic slipped on draft day and has some skills we need, but all these guys do. Kennedy gets hyped but I haven't really seen him play, although he seems to mark the ball overhead and has a good balance between midfielder and forward. In time maybe he'd take Matty Wrights spot, or have them both as tough ball-winners in the forward 50.

Hopper has been rumoured for a while and has a lot of talent. Really nice balanced game.

Smith is interesting, but not farfetched. We don't have a gun small forward, although Lebois has shown promise. Pickett has started as a forward pushing up into the midfield, but long-term he'd be good on a wing. SPS will also mostly play in the midfield.

Our 2017 2nd rounder to Haw for I think Pick 48 (MaCreadie) & a Pick in the 60's (Maybe Williamson) I think they were on traded from Melbourne as part of the Lewis trade. (I'm sure there are many Trade period experts who can correct me)

Many were saying at the time the Hawks owe us. Maybe we owe them :)

First sentence mostly incorrect.

Second sentences- very true!!

I know Kruezer is a free agent but why would be looking at letting him leave just as his body is starting to hold up and we are getting some depth in our midfield.

At this stage his back up is Philips who has had his injury troubles, Gorringe who hasn't proven himself and Korcheck who is a along way from playing seniors.

Because we are targeting the best possible squad for a run at the flag in 2020-2022.

Kreuz would be 31-33 years old - if we can get a high pick for him now?

Take it to the draft and get another gun young mid and take a project ruck as a rookie.

You are right, they were mutually beneficial but why would we have exclusive rights to these deals ??

My point is that to date, SOS's strong relationship has prevented most of the other clubs from getting in on the action and outbidding us. He's no magician or hypnotist so I'm questioning how much longer he can give us that inside running with GWS before they throw it wide open to the other clubs.

As long as we keep giving the GWS guys that do come to us every opportunity to strut their stuff in the 1's - the boys stuck in the NEAFL will be interested in heading to Royal Parade.

Once Hopper etc make that call SOS is in the box seat.

Did you ever wonder why Sumner, Plowman and Picketty got games even when they hadn't had proper pre-seasons?

Now you know!!!!!!

And if that's not enough - then an extra $150K per year might help as well.

That's my point...

I do not believe we expected Lamb or Palmer to be long-term contributors for us, but we took them and their contracts on board regardless to get a discount on the targets we really wanted.

It wouldn't surprise should we do the exact same thing at the end of this year. The targets remain somewhat obvious - Hopper & Kennedy in particular - but the contracts we may look to take on board to get the deals across the line aren't as obvious this time around.

Absolutely 100% spot on here J.

There would be no favors from the Giants but if any of those boys are out of contract and nominate Carlton , they'll have to deal with us.
We really need to get Marchbank, Plowman etc to be in the ears of their mates at GWS about how awesome it is here. How good the club is etc.

Flip Gibbs for him, Hopper will end up in our best 5.
This is what I would try to do. Hopper and Kennedy for say pick 14 (Gibbs) and our future second. If they nominate us it would be close to the mark if they don't establish themselves in the side.
We would also likely draft another midfielder top 5 in the draft so that will give us 3 top ten pick quality midfielders all in the one offseason and all 20 or younger....
