Alex Rance is the best defender in the game right now but is he the best full-back of all-time?

Barring injury he will be an All-Australian for the fourth year in a row in a career that is becoming truly phenomenal.

He is clearly the best defender in the game but is he the best full-back ever?

This year, like many before, he has showcased his entire arsenal of defensive abilities.

He ranks first in spoils for defenders, second in intercept marks (to Jake Lever, often zoning off inferior opponents), has the most intercept possessions and the second-best kick rating.

Lol, Lever has no qualms playing on a quality opposition player like Hipwood last week... but when Rance plays us, they hide him from the likes of Tex, given his history of being demolished.

Wouldn't mention Rance in the same breath as the likes of Scarlett.

It seems Floghard Road has been doing exactly that lately. Seems to be taking his role in China a little too preciously, just because Kochie isn't doing everything he wants.

His posts are quite hilarious at the moment.
Sitting back quaffing a nice Pinot while stitching up business deals because Port played a game in China.

But still poor against genuine top eight sides.

I must have missed the announcement that China Southern were pulling their Crows sponsorship. Wasn't that meant to be last week?

There are lies, damn lies, and statistics. Things like this is why I rarely rate stats. They have to be considered in context.

Exactly.

I notice they proudly boast leading the competition in Contested Possessions. Tbis stat is highly regarded for winning games and an indication of effort.

Yet against Us, GWS and WCE they lost that stat by an average of about 20 CPs game.

He rarely plays one on one anymore, and hasn't for a number of years. I hate every time the commentators start to laud him talking about how clever he is at leaving his man at the right time to spoil and then run away with the ball. Hate to tell them but Richmond work very hard to make sure he isn't on a player at all.

But he is not the best FB ever. His one on one work against key forwards is not up there with the best of this era, let alone past ones.

Talia and McKenzie are the games two best true FBs. Sam Rowe is up there too.

Yes, this. He's a very good player and I'd have him in my team (aside from any debate about who he replaces).

All this GOAT frothing is doing him a disservice because it just ends up with him being picked apart by oppo supporters. He didn't ask for that.

Agree with this. Watched his work in that last quarter and he is great at finding the space and position to be. But 2 tackles for the whole game and Cameron , his nominal opponent, kicked 3 goals.

Should make the AA side but never as FB

I definitely agree.

Rance will often not play on the best forward, he seems to be at his best when he is played on a poorer opponent where he can run off them and become a spare in the backline.

I have never been that impressed with Rance when he's forced to go one on one against a decent forward.

If you put forward a player as the best fb of all time then surely this player should at least play fb.

Rance never plays fb, he is always on the 3rd or 4th forward (or a loose man).

He is a good reader of the ball and maybe debate if he is the best half back flanker going around but he doesn't take the big full forwards.

This is not even an argument.
