Twomey reckons that Bailey won’t get past Melbourne’s late 20’s pick. He’s certainly bolted the last few weeks.
I'd happily take him at 21.

So, the Big Footy draft has progressed passed our first 5 picks. What I liked about our picking up of multiple second rounders was that we have a chance to shape our draft with multiple picks where the draft is strongest and I think Monocle has made the most of it.

Pick 13 – Jack Higgins (Oakley Chargers, Vic Metro)
The 2017 Morrish Medalist – previous winners were Oliver and McCluggage. A member of the AA U18 team, this guy is a small forward/midfielder providing flexibility and added depth in the midfield. He has played midfield and has produced consistently in that role, as well as hitting the scoreboard. Clark and Constable were already taken meaning Higgins who was tipped as top 10 slid through. Adelaide were the only team to go a tall option.

Pick 21 – Zac Bailey (NT Thunder, Allies)
A tough inside midfielder who manages to get frequent first use and then works well in traffic and delivering to outside options. Ideal inside mid and anyone disliking this pick, please see Dark Sharks. O’Brien, L Fogarty and Allen off the board. Another member of the AA U18 team.

Pick 26 – Tim Kelly (South Fremantle)
Mature recruit offering both inside and outside capability. Ready to go in 2018, the Sandover 2017 runner up would provide the age we need and a skill set we are lacking. Is this the right place to take him? Not sure but with a couple of clubs hovering, I guess he looked decent value at 26 and so good news. Deemed to be the best mature age recruit in the draft. Fills a void of that age group.

Pick 32 – Dylan Moore (Eastern Rangers/Vic Metro)
Another small forward with proven midfield capability, he is also a very competent midfielder. He has been likened to Tom Scully in his running ability. He is close to AFL ready in endurance and could be knocking on selection in 2018 as a crumbing forward – midfield will take some time to get the physical strength. Another member of the AA U18 team.

Pick 27 - Nathan Kreuger (South Adelaide/SA)
An interesting tall prospect at 196 cm that can play at both ends. Very strong in the contested marking and is also good at ground level. Can play as power forward and on the power forwards so a natural to develop either to replace Gov or JK.

What I like about our first 5 picks is the overall. It addresses midfield options - variety being tough inside, outside pace, smaller forwards who can take rotations and good football brains. We needed smaller forwards to fill a much needed void. Not sure if Miers would have been better than Moore - I do like the flexibility in midfield that Moore provides and either would have been good picks. No pure athletes in sight. Also good to get a quality tall that can develop for the future.

So BOND 007 - something like this would be nice!

I'll see what I can do

Funny you compare him to Scott West. I thought exactly the same thing but thought too many people might not remember West.
Well, that's enough for me to want to stay away from him........ There won't be a hard ball get in there anywhere.

It seems we really rate the mature WAFL talent this year, hence the loading up of round 2 picks. Is there actually a higher quality of talent than usual? Or are we just trying a new tactic we haven't exploited before? Or are we just scraping the barrel?

Im not so sure, because if that was the case they should have loaded up on 3rd / 4th rounders given the majority of the mature age talent is in this range (all but Kelly really).

I think we do want Kelly in the 2nd round but otherwise must rate the kids expected to be there in the 2nd round

If we blow all our 2nd rounders on mature agers then our club really has lost the plot .

The Allen speculation is ridiculous. I could understand picking him over a much needed mid if he was 200cm and a genuine key forward height, but goes against everything the club has been saying to pick an undersized "key" forward with 13. Just don't see a world in which it happens
Or maybe they don't rate Allen as a small kpd at all, but see him as a tall mid.. too many assumptions in this thread.

and before you reply with Allen is no mid, well If the recruiters do deem this to be the case then I'm willing to back them in over the west coast bf mob .

Should the above eventuate (personally would be ok with it, I reckon Allen has something special) , all I demand is that we actually develop him in the position he was drafted to play. No more discrepancy between recruiters and coaching team plz.

That's been the problem lately, whatever the recruitment team seems to see in our draftees doesn't translate over to the development coaches. Massive part of this is that we seem unwilling to actually play these guys in the positions we want them to develop into. Now I'm not saying we should be playing some of these guys in the centre square from day one, but I think we should at least be giving them some rotations through the middle. Sure play them off a flank, but give them 10 minutes here and there in the middle as well. We may see this more next season with Priddis and Mitchell gone but I think it needs to be a focus from our coaches.

Balta > Brander IMO
Balta has had some ups and downs in 2017 so depends on the games you saw him play may impact your view of him. In the game against WA, Allen and Miller tore him a new one. He was angry and the more irate he got the wider his orifice was made. That was my observation - FWIW.

Oh, I have seen him play better games but the games where he did well were TV so harder to see how a KPD goes compared to being at the game.

If Caleb Daniel was 185cm he would have gone number 1. But he wasn’t. Higgins will probably struggle to be an inside mid at afl level. His size does limit him so can’t simply he ignored. If available at 13 though I would expect he’s best available.

Higgins isn't THAT small though. Probably has 10cm on Daniel?

I fear we are just focusing on WA and immediate impact talent, rather than best available. I don’t think the mature talent is anything too special or better than normal.

With players controlling the trade period over the last 2-3 years and using the go home excuse, I wonder if this is a deliberate change of approach to the draft by our recruiters? Unless there's no comparable WA talent available at our pick, focus on WA kids.

Or it could just be BF folk making assumptions in the absence of any actual statement by the club.

I know this is answer contradicts itself but I want to say both.

Haggers saying Lecca training the house down and priming for a midfield role in 2018.

No need to draft mids now lads. All aboard the Allen @13 train!
I remember Lecca training the house down last pre-season as well. Came 3rd or 4th in the 3km time trial.

If Lecca can stay fit, he is still a very dangerous forward. Needs to improve his away games a lot though.

He needs to train his butt off. These days small forwards are up the field almost playing as midfielders.
