I appreciate your efforts to inject new blood into the AA squad, but Riewoldt and Rance have Caddy and Vlastuin well covered respectively based on overall output for 2018. Shane Edwards has been very good - his best year to and and potentially in the squad of 40 - but won't get First XXII, especially not over Shaun Higgins.

Haven't submitted a team for this year. Not long to go now so here's what I think is gonna be the final team.

B: S. Hurn [C] (WCE) - A. Rance [VC] (RICH) - H. Andrews (BRIS)
HB: R. Laird (ADEL) - R. Tarrant (NM) - J. Lloyd (SYD)
C: A. Gaff (WCE) - T. Mitchell (HAW) - S. Higgins (NM)
HF: S. Edwards (RICH) - L. Franklin (SYD) - R. Gray (PA)
F: L. Breust (HAW) - B. Brown (NM) - J. Riewoldt (RICH)
R: B. Grundy (COLL) - S. Pendlebury (COLL) - P. Cripps (CARL)
INT: D. Martin (RICH) - D. Beams (BRIS) - S. Sidebottom (COLL) - P. Dangerfield (GEE)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. H. Andrews (BRIS) / T. Stewart (GEE) / D. Grimes (RICH)
Andrews has been a defensive beast this year. Stewart could slot into this position although I'd prefer a pure stopper. Andrews and Grimes (tall/small) eclipse Stewart in defensive aspects however you cannot underestimate Stewart as a negating yet offensive KPD; has a more rounded game with his rebounding as a deep defender and with a great hair and mo combo, he is next best ahead of Grimes.

2. S. Edwards (RICH) / J. Melksham (MELB) / D. Smith (ESS)
Yes I know it might seem biased but I honestly believe he's so underrated and genuinely plays that high HF flanker role where he also gets involved in the midfield. Is up there in goal assists (2nd) while averaging 20 touches a game; a lot of his work goes unnoticed with how slick his hands are. Next in line I have J. Melksham; leading goal assists and also averaging over a goal a game. Underrated and unliked player due to his punchable mug but I rate these types of players who just seem dangerous around that F50 arc which creates opportunities for goal.

3. J. Riewoldt (RICH) / T. Hawkins (GEE) / J. Hogan (MELB)
Yes, again I know, a Richmond player slotted in. Feel like Jack's work cannot simply be measured by stats. High IQ player who always makes decisions and plays that is best for the team. Kicked a fair amount of goals while being double teamed and always ensures that the ball spills. Hawkins next in line and to be honest, I wouldn't be fussed if he was slotted in for Jack right now. Moving like an absolute gazelle with the strength of a gorilla while kicking accurately and clunking marks. Few missed games is why I have Jack ahead for now but this is Hawkins' best season to date (on a consistency level). I know he has previously made AA and kicked a lot more goals, but his impact this year especially of late has been telling. Hogan been consistent throughout but hasn't dominated like the previous 2.

4. P. Dangerfield (GEE) / E. Yeo (WCE) / N. Fyfe (FRE)
Fyfe has been the best midfielder this year when he has played but has only played 13 games. If he comes back from injury and dominates like earlier in the season, he'll make it. Dangerfield is phenomenal; like Dusty he is being judged on previous years where he has dominated ala LBJ/MJ. Still had a great season, has played a lot forward and been extremely impactful. He is still easily top 5. Been BOG too many games (like Dusty) to be ignored. Yeo has had a consistent season and would be in my team personally, but selectors will pick bigger names ahead of him unfortunately.

40 man squad:

S. Hurn (WCE), A. Rance (RICH), H. Andrews (BRIS), R. Laird (ADEL), R. Tarrant (NM), J. Lloyd (SYD), T. Stewart (GEE), D. Grimes (RICH), M. Blicavs (GEE), L. Whitfield (GWS), T. Jonas (PORT), N. Vlastuin (RICH)

Gawn a bit stiff not to even make the top 40

Yeah probably not on the ground.

Won't be surprised if he makes it though, had a massive impact in some big games this season.
He is in the 40.

Will be close to the 22

i think Lloyd is lucky. I would prefer Vlastuin, or Simpson or Whitfield or Howe

Tarrant shouldn't make it on this years form tbh, although from my mob I'd have Higgins & Brown as locks.

There have not been many dominant tall backs. Tarrant had a great start to the season, but i haven't noticed him much since then.

Like my side.

Tapered off.

Thompson has been our number 1 KPB this year and nobody will have him in their squad.

I have Thompson making the 40 but not the team. Brown and Higgins both in.

Not saying one over the other but while most of Hawkins stats are marginally better, Riewoldt is one of the most creative players going round. Balances the ledger a bit. Closer than you obviously think.

Hawkins is #1 among key forwards for goal assists per game (and #4 in the league), and #2 among key forwards for score involvements per game (#3 in the league), solidly ahead of Jack in both categories.

Hawkins is also ahead of Jack in goals per game, marks per game, contested marks per game, and marks inside 50 per game.

Hawkins seemingly can't get no respect!

Hawkins just kicked 7 from everywhere and set up the winning goal in a 2 point win.

Not saying Riewoldt isn't creative but the implication that Hawkins isn't creative is just flat out wrong.

Would have arguably had goal of the year a fortnight earlier if he finished properly against Sydney - picked up on the run, 'sold the candy' (f---- I hate that saying) to two consecutive defenders and kicked check-side but missed.

Riewoldt is a pretty creative player himself though.

Massive oversight. Was extremely jet-lagged, my apologies. He's definitely a lock. In for Melksham.

On what basis are people suddenly favouring Jack Riewoldt over Tom Hawkins?
I wrote the reason why but I'll clarify a bit further. Just think Jack's impact around the ground and actively getting other players involved is very understated if you're just looking at his raw stats. They're playing different roles but I did mention I wouldn't be fussed if they were swapped around as Hawkins has been excellent.
Granted I watch more of Jack than I do Hawkins, I made my decision based on that and also the fact Richmond are sitting 1st on the ladder with the 2nd most points scored - Jack is a huge reason for that.

"while most of Hawkins stats are marginally better"

Did you read his comment at all? He literally said what you just repeated like he said Jack was ahead in most stats.
As he said Hawkins is only slightly ahead in most of the stats he leads in.

How is Hawkins getting no respect by saying he would pick a guy that has had an as good year in front of him? Jack has been sensational this year.

Even talking both players in the frame for AA means they are getting respect. Hawkins up until last season was quite one dimensional, now he is not. Very rounded player and lately both have been playing similar games. I think Jack Riewoldt is under rated, and more creative and mobile that is all.
