Not Scarlo on this occasion....Troy Selwood saw him initially at North Old Boys, then Wells himself saw him live at the Cannons....

There was interest in Evans from 4 other clubs, so they decided to grab him at #41.

Could be a diamond in the rough Larry....
Super excited about him.
Imagine him kicking the odd bag to compliment Miers into the future
Would love to see in 3 years if Taheny, Evans, Miers, Tarca, Krueger and Jarvis are heading up the forward division
We really need some goalkicking talent injected into the club
I reckon we wanted Williams at 26 and when he went it was time to trade out. Getting 2020 pick 11 is unbelievable
Next year will have this board even more frantic than this year

Does anyone know if Taheny tested at the Combine?
If so, does anyone know some of his results? Pls post.

Sub 3 secs is quick.... bloody quick....Kennerly also a sub 3 secs...handy pace up forward in the future...I think Cockatoo has a bit of pace as well...and I think Kreuger is no slow coach either.

Don't know about Evans, but his highlights show great hands and a bit of pace as well....

On Taheny....Its interesting to see how many draft gurus rated Taheny in the mid 20's...lets hope they were correct!!

Best of the rest for two rookie picks:

Midfielders:
Partington - 181cm - can't knock the guy's stats in SANFL or his combine testing 20m sprint @ 2.87secs, agility at 8.15secs, and 21.2 yoyo. But there is something about his game that looks like he might be a battler at AFL level. Not sure.
Kuller - 177cm - this is the guy I want in our midfield with a rookie pick. True midfield bull for his size. If we don't rookie him, want him in the VFL system at least.
O'Neil - 181cm midfielder (although Draft Guide has him at 176cm!?) - looks decent pace, good by foot and evasive.
Others
Mott - 182cm midfielder
Cassar - 184cm utility
Chirgwin - 191cm inside midfielder
Sparkes - 185cm Outside Midfielder

Forwards:
Lowson - 182cm forward - 2.93 secs 20m, 91cm running leap... something tells me with Evans and Taheny, we won't be looking for another small forward.
Sokol - 184cm forward - 60 goals in wafl. Poor combine testing, same as above, we drafted 2 mid sized forwards already.
Otavi - 198cm Forward/Ruck - 2.98 secs 20m, 91cm running leap, 79cm standing leap. 23yo. Williamstown VFL. Looks mobile, but not big enough for Ruck, more Key Position.
Jeka - 197cm Key Posistion D/F
D'Intinosante - 177cm Forward/Midfielder - Probably lacks the speed and endurance, but a very high production player, BnF Knights last year, runner up this year, averages 2 goals a game.

Rucks:
Bell - 202cm ruck
Archie Smith - 204cm ruck - lions
Goddard - 202cm Ruck averaging 39 HOs at WAFL, lacks speed/endurance.
Patterson - 201cm Ruck (19yo) averaging 27 HOs at Colts, fast, agile, good vertical, but only 83kgs.

General Defenders - probably not a need, but listed:
J Clark - 188cm defender - falcons
Finlay - 192cm defender
Hilder - 195cm Key defender

* But knowing Wellsy, we might go totally left field with those two picks....

The other one maybe worth considering is Ben Keay Lions... good stats and kicking goals in NEAFL only 22.

I think Lions might re-rookie him and Archie Smith.

BEN KEAYS

While Keays only managed two AFL games this season, his ability to reinvent himself as a small forward at NEAFL level could pay dividends.

A natural ball magnet, Keays averaged 27 disposals from 2016 to 2018 as a midfielder at NEAFL level. He won the Andrew Ireland Medal for best-on-ground in the Lions’ 2017 grand final triumph over Sydney and was one of four Lions players to win the club’s 2018 reserves best and fairest award.

But Keays, 185cm, made the transition to a small forward role in 2019 and thrived, booting 43.19 from 16 games, including six hauls of four-plus goals. He also averaged 20 touches, 4.8 marks and an elite 8.4 score involvements, according to Champion Data.

Keays, who was taken at Pick 24 in the 2015 draft, only recently returned from an overseas holiday to the US, so the process of finding a new footy home will commence shortly. At 22, he still has a burning desire to play on at AFL level, with his versatility — which includes being able to perform defensive roles — set to put him in good stead.

Lynch said Keays was the ultimate professional, adding his workrate and attitude to training can’t be faulted.

“He was a very good midfielder at NEAFL level, but the transition into the AFL was going to be pretty limited in the midfield, so he needed to find something up forward. That’s probably now his best position at AFL level,” he said.

“His pace might be the issue plus continuing to work on being clean with his hands at AFL level, but he finds the ball a lot and, from everything I’ve heard, the way he presents himself and trains, he’s very ‘coachable’.”

Clubs that should consider him: As a versatile player that can play either in the guts or up forward, Keays would be an appropriate fit at Port Adelaide, especially considering he’s only 22. Adelaide might also consider him, while Gold Coast could do with another small forward, which would mean the Queensland product wouldn’t have to move interstate.

So apparently Sam Murray will be picked up by either Tigers, GWS, or Demons.

He would be ready to go, immediate depth.

Well worth a read...particularly for those questioning just how well Geelong have fared this year.

Overall happy, but I wonder if we couldn’t have got Taheny at 41 (?) and the Evans at 64, and thereby kept 2020 R2 (~40)

Seems possible given that even Frances Evans’ own mother didn’t know who he was when his name was read out.

Just thinking - after the last two evenings, we essentially gave up Kelly for Stephens, Taheny, and both West Coast's and Gold Coast's future 1st rounders.

That's a pretty bloody good piece of business by Wells and co. :thumbsu:

His mother may not have, but 4 other clubs apart from Geelong has shown interest in him.....which is why Wells grabbed him at 41 I suspect.

We got Taheny at 50 (a bargain according to most) anyway so it worked out well...

Check out the Roar article i quoted above Moggy...encapsulates Geelong's draft result pretty well

How can anyone judge the success of the draft when none of the new players have played a game for our club? Success/Failure will not be known until at least end of next year when our ready to go recruits have games under their belts (or lack of) and the young guys have played a season of VFL (and hopefully some AFL games). Until then not even worth talking about.

GWS are jam packed with gun midfielders. Surely we can get one from there, as they would surely come across salary cap issues to keep them all.
Would be tough to poach from Suns, they have a lot of talent from last 2 drafts. Those young kids will bond together and are on decent coin, Suns can afford to splurge on them and try and keep them.
given they just drafted Green and that Caldwell, Hately, and O'Halloran were already down the order, and on top of that GWS doesn't have any firsts next year they might be willing to offload some combination of them for an appropriate combination of picks.

There would be 4 clubs interested in every player ranked to about 150. DD is their job. That’s the catch cry for every unexpected pick since Adam was a boy.

If I jumped on the Coll board how many clubs had shown interest in Bianco. Lucky they jumped.

I think the one I'm probably most upset about not selecting is Jeremy Sharp. Only because he is 189cm, has the speed, has the endurance, and his kicking is solid and was an AA twice as an outside midfielder.
For me, this was the one that could've added immediate depth to our team starting next year, and looked an ideal Mitch Duncan replacement.
I could've seen him slot in next year on one wing, with Duncan on the other, and then we could've played Clark and Stewart off the back half giving us a lot more pace.

I know I know, the price for it was too juicy. Pick 11, and effectively a Pick in the 60s, which we managed to trade into get Taheny. Overall, it was good trade management, but if Sharp turns out to be a gun outside midfielder, it could hurt us a little, especially if we campaign again next season.

Lack of depth in the Hawkins position, and lack of depth in outside midfield class cost us that Prelim basically, and probably a flag. We addressed the first issue with Jenkins, but we haven't addressed the second issue still. Hopefully in the rookie draft.

I feel a bit the same. We couldn’t knock that offer back but to walk away with Sharp on top of Stephens, De Koning and Taheny would have felt sweeter. Having said that, Sharp could be a bust. He isn’t any certainty albeit that he exudes class with the ball in his hands.

Looking at it from the long game, that trade for pick 11 may allow us to trade for Caldwell. I’d take him over Sharp any day.

Yes, I think Williams was our target at 26. And after trading out I’m pretty sure it was Perez until he was taken several picks before ours.
