Watching this video with Troy Selwood speaking to Stephens, is exactly why I know we've made the right choice:

That is someone who is absolutely 110% committed to our club, and who looks so stoked to be playing for us. Would have loved for us to take Kemp and him (if we didn't want Robbo), but SDK seems like a good kid too, and could really be anything. Hope we grab Sharp at 26 and then Williams, Riccardi or Sokol at 36. That would be a very good draft.

I'm genuinely more interested now to see who we use our spare rookie pick on, as there could be some mature age gun running around that no-one knows about who gets picked, haha.

Part 1 of 4 of the Kelly trade done
A) Cooper Stephens
B)
C)
D)
Good post .... all we can hope for is 4 names that deliver 2 or 3 players that become 100 game plus players ..more than that and we have a win. CS was rated very highly before the leg... predicted top10 .. so good start imo.

I was quite surprised we took De Koning and honestly can’t see us taking Gould now, if one thing we have that’s defenders, I can see us going a hybrid mid/fwd and a player like Ricardi.
The only thing that might get me thinking we may go after Gould is Wells comments about Clark that they see him more as a Mid rather than a backman, which to me looked like his natural position

The SA clubs have 3 picks to night before us one of them will grab Gould you would reckon.

Im surprised that Robertson has made it this far, could be his kicking or could the go home factor, will be interesting to see how far he falls.
A West Coast bargain at pick 47,my guess is he's played the go home card at interviews.

"He broke his leg this year in the championships and didn't play again but from all medical reports, including ones as late as yesterday, he'll have a 100 per cent recovery and he should be fine. He's well into his rehab at the moment and it shouldn't affect his career. He came onto our radar at the start of last year when he first started playing with the Geelong Falcons, which was when we noticed he might be a potential draftee for this year, and he was playing very good football as a midfielder in the first half of this season." Stephen Wells

“Having played mainly with the Falcons as a midfielder – certainly all of last year and for the first half of this year – we saw enough improvement in him and enough class in the way he went about his business as a midfielder to attract our interest,” Wells said.

“What he had done up until when he broke his leg was enough for us. X comes from a terrific sporting family, a terrific family and has been a really good player for the Geelong Falcons.”

I can’t believe no one wants Gould, he’s the best footballer left. He has proven he can play against men and is 2 x AA , forget list management and pick a footballer.
I was convinced if we didn't get him with 16 we'd get him with 19. Would be very happy if he falls to us at 26

It's posts like this that crack me up. You say that a certain amount of posters are "Nuffies" or pretending to be list managers all because they post thought out opinions with facts to back said opinions up.

Here you are calling a large majority of the posters nuffies all because they don't agree with Wells' pick(s)? Just because they have a differing opinion, and not an outlandish one at that. Last time I checked this is a message board where you're allowed to state your opinion In a respectful manner, so are these posters not allowed to have differing views to Wells' in your opinion? Do we all have to bow down to the great Stephen Wells? As clearly he never gets it wrong, and clearly us armchair experts never get it right.

No one has hated on the picks from what I've seen. They've only (Including myself) disagreed and provided an informed opinion about why they would have preferred someone else, in this case Robertson and Kemp, which is a perfectly reasonable case to make.

You also say that a large majority of us are "The Prince of fools" but you fail to acknowledge the times where we're actually right, and Wells wrong or at least on par. How many here wanted Grundy over Thurlow? Or Matt Crouch over Lang? Jake Lever over Cockatoo? How about just not selecting Mitch Brown or Smedts at all? Etc etc.

If anything, the nuffie is the one who decides to just follow whatever Wells does assuming he's got it right, which clearly over the last decade he hasn't. Because if he had, we wouldn't have to top up every year and have an imbalance in our list.

The bloke gets it right, and he gets it wrong, much like the rest of us. But to blindly follow and accuse posters of being idiots just for having a differing opinion to Wells is just plain ridiculous Imo.

So my only issue with your take on Stephens & drafting in general is that Wells and co have far more information & vision to go on espalier one a case of a kid that played 2 games in top age year, unless you’re not basing you opinion on short highlights and other people draft guide type opinions of him? Btw I would have taken Kemp & Robertson first too.

No chance Dev gets to 47. He will go in the 20s.

The reactions of some ..a mix of disappointment and consternation because we have not drafted Robertson .... or perhaps becuase the highlighs package of CooperS is not more glossy ... I tend to find peoples own desires (including my own) can cloud our initial assessments at the conclusion of our picks ..who we have picked and who we have not .. and none of these young men have played afl level yet .. who will be the best in 2 or 3 years time has nothing or little to do with a 2 min. snapshot of playing against kids , most who are not good enough to get drafted .. Robertson is more than that for sure.. but he is not the first , will not be the last to slip even after a great champs..

I posted this the other day when some were disheartened at the thought of not trading up.. ..and here we half way thu the draft and I think its fair to say its on track to be prophetic ..

Superficial disappointment based on a idealised calculated result ... most of the disussion I read and converse with on here is with have football educated opinions with sensible judgement , so sure they have opinions worth of reading and discussion yet once we have players on the list Id think you will find the potential disappointment of this draft will be less around not trading up ..but rather to the player we did not pick when we had a chance... because Its highly , highly unlikely that the players quality pans out in the progression from 1 to 2 to 3 etc... If someone like Kemp or Cooper Stephens develops into the best players from this draft then not trading up will be historically far less important.

Boy I so glad we did not trade up like Gold Coast.. That a few names has slipped is not surprising at all ..its something that happens most years..that its Robertson and Kemp ..yes a bit but the tale of tape will not be told for a while. We may even draft Robertson with our next pick.. although I suspect we look at alt types. Some on the outside perhaps.. or someone who has that run like Rantall..Perhaps Rivers. who knows thats the fun of it.

I totally support our choices so far. .. as I would have if our team had chosen others. What the young men have done so far has been good enough to get drafted..what happens from here is at least somewhat to do with the club as well as the player. Cooper may even play next year.. if so .. I think plenty of fair minded will change their minds on him and who was not picked by anyone in the top20 will be less a focus. You cant have everyone.

In a new day I think we can at least acknowledge that we’ve added to our midfield with Stephens. If he can become that big ball winning inside type that can run all day then we’ve done well. No go home factor to worry about...
I was happy to take him pre-draft. Do we think the Blues were going to take him with their Kemp pick? I get that feeling now. If they hadn’t traded down I wonder whether we would have taken him at 17 and another with 14? We’ll never probably know the answer.

Initial feeling was that ‘we traded Kelly and got another injured guy who would have slipped to the 20s and a skinny, overly tall defender when we needed a ruck’.

With a sleep and a good calming down I see that these are good selections.

Cooper’s injury (a fracture) is not anywhere near the horrendous break that crueled Lang, he’s fit and good size already. He has the mid attributes and leadership to be Joel’s replacement. The only question of course is whether Robertson was better, but everyone passing so far perversely provides comfort.

Sam - the All Australian FB - who could possibly also play ruck and forward- actually now looks a little bit like a steal.

With some good ones left we’re likely to do well with the next selection, making this a pretty good draft on the face of it. Of course only time will tell.

I would be happy with a smaller mid replacement such as Bianco and a fast outside mid as the other 2 picks. There will be a bridge with jack Steven and Joel Selwood having a few more years each. There is also the SA boys from last year. With De Koning and Krueger we have our developing talls. With Chook and Stephens we have our developing bigger bodies in the middle. So two out of Bianco, Rivers, Sharp, Williams, Schoenberg etc would really make it a solid draft with a few chances at A Grade players developing

We desperately need a small defender that is elite by foot …. hopefully we can grab Bianco with our next pick.

You would think so but stranger things have happened

Strange things have already happened l believe but 3 SA picks with Gould still on the table, l'd say no hope.
Pity that we could've done with one like him, anyway some excellent prospects still available, some worthy of 1st rd imo.
Also a couple of very good talls like Harrison Jones.

He is the one I wanted most, I wanted us to take him at 19 but Wells obviously had other ideas, he wont get to us now based on the fact that 3 of the 4 picks before ours are by Port and Adelaide which sucks.
