Game Day 2019 AFL Draft Day- RD1, RD2 + beyond

Yeah one who wanted to leave after a year, was forced to stay another year then left after that, one who had his missus bagging the club for not providing enough support, one who was talking to West Coast the day after being drafted by us....dont kid yourself it was a debacle and one that Geelong would like to avoid again. Anyway lets leave the Kelly talk, he is gone now. Id rather have a guy dedicated to the club for 10 years rather than someone who will stay for the 2 years and then piss off back home.

Two things:
1. If he played like scrud and we got nothing for him, I might think it a debacle. But he gave us plenty, and we made like bandits with draft value. His sideshow was largely manufactured by his naïve wife versus a bunch of obvious trolls, and did nothing to detract from his performance.
2. His situation as a married 25 year old with a young needy family is nothing like that of a 18 year old draftee. You only have to look at Clark to see the difference.

From what I can gather - the original plan was to take a combination of Kemp and Cooper at #17 and #22.

C Stephens at best is a David Mundy, or probably most likely a Sam Mengola type - but Menegola looks like he has better depth on his kicking and better overhead marking. Have to wait and see.

Its amazing how people can foresee exactly what someone will become.

I actually really like Riccardi, so him going one pick before our 40 would be pretty feels bad.

The thing with Robertson is his uncle is the list manager at Weagles, Darren Glass. That may indicate a flight risk and no doubt the Eagles will come hard for him wherever he goes.

I think Sharp's kicking action is fine - just needs a subtle tweak I reckon to have it more reliable. He's got terrific speed/endurance combination and has hurt factor. Needs to improve his concentration - can he do this? And does he want it enough? They are my two main concerns with him.

Reckon we leave the "Wells specials" ala Waybill to the rookie draft....

Sometimes the kicking action is not the issue... will wait and see i guess. Didnt like him having a setshot so maybe its just my bias. Id not put it past wells to pull someone once we get into the 40's

Yeah l think you're right on there, Sharp or Rivers l was thinking too.
Sharp is quick he's also got a big tank 2km run and 20 mt times were excellent.
Av around 20 disposals at the Carnival and was a bit of a gun for WA.
He's now 189cm as well and a nice build for a kid, same goes for Rivers but l think he'll go Sharp out of those two.
Rivers is no slouch though.

I'm keen on Sharp as well - a few pieces of play in the Champs were elite, he and Clark could give us some real zip between the arcs

Any trading back should involve a first round pick. Preferably from Ess or Haw.

Ie First Rd pick for our pick. Then we could look to trade our GC pick into the last 30s was early 40s. Maybe grab that ruckman, #36 and keep the powder dry for next year.

If we want Williams then we would have to go at pick 24 according to Cal. Highly unlikely that Gould will be there and it won’t matter about Robertson. Even if he’s there now I’d be very surprised if we took him. If we really rated him “highly” on our draft board or if Cooper was strategic to get in front of Carl then we would have pulled the trigger at 19. Categorically we now know he wasn’t rated top 20 by us so even if we had him top 25 in a line ball call at 26 we have other needs. His Geelong papers are stamped.

Reflecting on yesterday clearly we could have got Carl’s pick with an offer of 14 & 17 and clearly we ranked Cooper just higher than Kemp. They were the two big decisions we were juggling.

Therefore I look forward to comparing and monitoring:

Flanders v CStephens & De Koning battle.
Cooper Stephens v Brodie Kemp battle.

Always fun to compare in hindsight.

Recruiters wouldn't scratch a name on any definitely draft-worthy prospect. It just depends on where they have him ranked relative to others.



There would be scenarios that could still happen where we select Robertson, if he's our next preference or if there are others we have ahead of him that are snaffled by other clubs.

what are the chances we now trade up and get two picks inside 30. I,d prefer to do that and trade out say pick 40 and next years 2nd or 3rd round pick and get two more quality recruits.
