I just think that is about the coach getting the match ups right. Tall, player, good user, good decision maker. All good qualities for best 22.
aren't Wilson & Ryan our 2 expert users from the backline, who happen to also be good defenders?
do we need a lockdown there, such as Nyhuis?

Agree. In Wilson and Ryan we've got two great intercepting defenders. We need a lockdown small defender in the back half and I rate Nyhuis very highly for that aspect of his game. He rarely gets beaten one on one.

Well the tall forward order is always going to depend on form and the opposition.

My enduring memory of Duman to date was formed at the MCG when Richmond bollocked us.
Prior to the game I had read on here about how quick he was, but the memory I have is of him chasing one of the Tiger small forwards who had the ball & ran away from him with ease.
It looked as if the Richmond player was running on a travelator while Duman was wearing cement shoes in quicksand!
Can someone on here confirm that it was an anomaly & that he is indeed quick, as someone with his build needs a point of difference IMO, please?

Pretty sure he was cooked. You don’t run that fast after just running 800m chasing tail. He’s quick.

I think there is 1 vacancy in our defence, and traditionally Lyon has used a midfielder. By doing that it sets up the possibility of rotating midfielders instead of benching them. Midfielders are often better at getting possession of the ball and decision making than defending per se. We have terrific options for this, bit two of the best options are injured, so the vacancy exists.

Duman or Nyhuis is a good debate. But I prefer the advantage that having the extra midfielder brings. If Duman can transition to the wing, great. But guys like Bewley, North or Giro coming in to cover SHill and Blakely could be an option, and keeping Cerra back (it also seem like a good place for him to develop, with midfield stints).

My preferred;

Hamling Pearce Ryan
Wilson Logue Cerra (rotating with Conca)

I used to think this but I looked into opposition small forwards and they just never seem to be a big issue unless we absolutely get smashed in the midfield. An accountable midfield is more important and allows for a more attacking backline.

This is what I posted last time.

In the past I've been an advocate for a back-pocket lock down defender, especially Nyhuis as I quite like the way he plays.

However if we're worried about small forwards running riot (kicking 3+ goals) I'm not sure selecting a lockdown defender is the the main component to stopping them.

Small forwards that kicked 3 or more goals on us in 2019.
Rnd 13 v Brisbane - Lewis Taylor 3 goals
Rnd 18 v Essendon - Orazio Fantasia 5 goals
Rnd 19 v Hawks - Luke Bruest 4 goals
Rnd 20 vs Eagles - Jamie Cripps 4 goals/ Liam Ryan 3 goals
Rnd 22 vs Geelong - Brandan Parfitt - 4 goals

Five games where our midfield got completely outworked. I know it's cliche but if the midfield doesn't work hard enough the backline is going to cop a hammering and it doesn't matter what defenders are playing.

yes that is different, but was he any good at it, or was he found out due to a lack of pace, therefore more suited to the bigger opponents, who would then have the muscle over him.
As for being the fastest on the field, the brief piece of play I have stuck in my head made him look like the slowest.
I hope it is an erroneous memory as he seems a good user of the ball, both decision wise & with respect to execution.

I clearly remember that incident and also some armsy non-takling deep in defence. For mine he is not yet B22 but is knocking on the door.

Can someone just tell me if we’re gonna be any good this year or not? Need to know which way to ratchet up the annual ‘hope-o-meter’.
We could be, but the injuries outlook would want to improve from here.

If we don't have most on the park each week we will be comfortably in the 10-15 range.

I think it is another season where we celebrate the parts and the individual development is on the cards. The transition of the rucks. The establishment of a forward line. The development of Brayshaw and Cerra. Some debuts. If it all comes together by mid season, ratchet away. But I wouldn't go early.

Pretty much as I would expect. Celebrate the individual wins, don’t grab for the bottle of pills during the times things go a bit pear shaped.
Would’ve liked s simple yes-no, but nothing ever is, especially with Freo.

I’m excited. We’ve added some very good players and you will see a lot of improvement from our younger brigade. Could make the 8.

Yeah I think finals are definitely on the cards.
GWS are on the slide for sure.
I see perennials like hawks, cats and swans also dropping off sharply, I honestly think at least two of those three will miss the eight - hopefully all of them. And then you look at the teams outside the eight and the likes of Port and the bulldogs have gone backward in the trade period, Essendon should make the eight but there will be other spots up for grabs and why can't we grab one?

GWS' best 22 is still pretty handy IMO. Also think Adelaide are going straight back into the 8 (pending injuries).

If we get there we will have earned it.

There is a bit of fluidity about what might happen this season, especially in the lower end of the 8. Hopefully provides some great tussles. Wonder if Lyon has asked Drummy to pop over and do some white-board work for the club regarding possible wins? There's nothing like a visionary, and Drum was nothing like a visionary.

Can anyone fill me in on how young Sturt's pre-season has gone and how he is shaping up. Not for Supercoach or Rd1 or Rising Star reasons, but just as a top young AFL prospect imo. I was a big fan of his at the draft and look forward to his progress.

Cheers
Even he plays round, their will be better options in rookies.

Slowly, still building

Will start in the wafl.

Some thought he was a bit scared of the bigger bodies. View the training reports for more detail.

Been awhile, updated based on projected injuries / likely injuries / remaining pre-season form / inevitable R1 Ballantyne lock:

Pearce Hamling Ryan
Logue Wilson Duman

Darcy Mundy Brayshaw
Conca Fyfe BHill

Langdon Taberner Walters
Ballantyne Hogan Lobb

Cerra Colyer Banfield Tucker

Not exactly my B22, just what I think the club will go with.

Expecting some early debuts and some good competition for spots early.

No Bewley or North even without S.Hill and Blakely for round 1

Here's how I see the round 1 team panning out, it assumes Sandilands, Bennell, S Hill and Blakely are out injured.

FB:. Ryan, Hamling, Wilson
HB: Cerra, Pearce, Logue
C: B Hill, Mundy, Langdon
R: Darcy, Fyfe, Brayshaw
HF: Taberner, Hogan, Walters
FF: Switkowski, Lobb, Colyer
IC: Duman, Bewley, Banfield, Conca
Emergency from: Tucker, Meek, Cox, Matera, McCarthy, Nyhuis
