MEMO TO CARUSO - DRAFT 5 BRENT DANIELS’

Well not exactly, but as I alluded to in the last post Brent Daniels is the blueprint modern day footballer.

Why?

Because he plays with speed, purpose and offensive and defensive accountability. He sees ball and chases it and when he’s not with it he’s trying to find it.

I love this player, not because he’s the most talented, not for his highlight reel but because he sets a standard and plays to the best of his ability every week.

Sometimes he makes mistakes, sometimes he doesn’t finish off his work but he always tries and as a fan that is what you want to see.

CARUSO, IF YOU CAN’T DRAFT A DANIELS, DRAFT A HAYNES OR A PERRYMAN.

No clearly not literally but once again heart and soul players that give a shit every week, put their body on the line and try.

Apparently the best playing comparison to Haynes seems Chapman, I haven’t been in the interviews to know what he’s like but if his professionalism is like Nick then pick the bloke, if not pick someone else.

Perryman is arguably part of the lack of agility issue but he more than makes up for it with heart and intent. He is a footballers footballer, he will jump on the grenade and is the bloke that wins you a final through courage, more Perryman’s please.

I have watched all our games, yes we have a frightening amount of skill, watching the pre-game is like watching the Harlem Globetrotters, but we need game day players.

You have the opportunity to pick 5 guys that can help rebuild this team and change its ethos from flashy selfish to team first heart players.

Don’t stuff this up!

You’re surely being facetious.
Steele left because he wasn’t getting game time in a stacked midfield.
We’ve got a better look at Hoppers ceiling than we ever got for Steele.
We have Taranto, Green, Hopper and Cogs as our inside midfield brigade.
Yes I know Cogs and Taranto spend some time forward, but most of their time is on the ball.
We need more speed.
Green is a better version of Hopper. Hopper has shown no ability to play anywhere but on ball.

Maybe, just not a fan of very talented academy kids in other colours. It’ll come back to bite us

I don’t know enough about draftees to know who we should take with all of our picks. I’ve seen a few videos and of those that I like that will also have a realistic chance of getting a gig in the 22 in a couple of years, I’d say Cox for the key back spot and Macrae for a wing spot. If he’s good enough he can make the wing his own in less than two years.

Outside of those I don’t think it really matters who we take... they’ll be leaving in a couple of years for more game time somewhere else.

I’d just want Macrae instead of that inside mid.
That stood out to me too.
I'd expect that our next picks would still be available at the following pick, we could effectively swap McCrae for the ruck.
That'd be a better draft.

Yes, some interesting selections for us and overall as well. Especially if Twomey has inside information and it turns out this way.

My thoughts:
  • I will be surprised if Nik Cox gets through to our first pick, but if so, I won't be surprised if GWS select him. His speed & endurance will give him some D50 rebounding attributes that will be great for GWS. My only query is on whether he becomes a 1st/2nd KPD good enough to replace Davis, but he is an exciting prospect and no issues if we select him first up.
  • If GWS did take Cox first, I'd be a little surprised to also take Heath Chapman. Despite my great belief that Chapman would be great for us, I'm not sure we would be able to fit both into the team in the short term, unless we were really treating Chapman more as a Heath Shaw replacement than third tall.
  • At that Chapman pick, both Arche Perkins and Finlay Macrae are available, and I would think one of those would be preferable (even though I've opined that defenders should be a priority, but Perkins/Macrae would be different to mids we currently have).
  • Very surprised if no-one bids on Lachie Jones as late as #17.
  • Bailey Laurie would be a great little competitor in the mold of (a taller) Brent Daniels; however if we take Cox & Chapman earlier, I'd like to look at Jack Carroll here, as someone who is multi-talented as a defender/mid prospect, or Finlay Macrae is still available under Twomey's prognostication ... but I guess if the recruiters like Bailey's competitive streak (and that accords with some GWS posters' thoughts) then fair enough.
  • Luke Pedlar isn't an inspiring choice to me, and I'd prefer to try for a mid earlier and see if Laurie makes it through to here ... again Pedlar is a competitive beast but I'm not sure he's got enough strings to his bow to succeed. If we followed this exact selection line-up, I'd prefer an outside type like Caleb Poulter who at least has something that we would different to a bunch of guys we already have.
  • I really don't see what Shannon Neale would bring to our side ... Preuss, Mummy, Flynn, Briggs and a fifth ruck? I hope this is a pure furphy. Even the alternative, Matt Allison, as an athletic forward would seem more likely - unless we don't rate Flynn & Briggs! I'd still prefer someone with some pace, like an Isiah Winder/Brodie Lake, than another ruck!
Anyway, we'll see how accurate Twomey is and whether the end result is close to this. I can certainly live with the first 3 very easily, and that's probably enough ... the others might surprise if they're chosen.

Good summary, I’m hoping a bid for McInnes doesn’t come and perhaps we could use for leverage at Pick 15? Would be good to potentially get Collingwood’s 1st rounder for next year for one of our 20’s picks.

I suspect Adelaide are thinking this with Pick 9 but it’s a risky call at that stage as Collingwood may not match. Adelaide are the most tactical and stealthy when it comes to the draft. They love f****** up other teams drafts. Not usually our style.

Yes, I did have similar thoughts about Reef McInnes, but as you say, absolutely not our style to be pricks in the draft.

I was a bit surprised that Twomey had Adelaide bidding on Reef so early and Magpies not matching ... I wouldn't have him that early, but I think this is one draft where there's a wide difference in different clubs' assessment in relation to some (but certainly not all) kids. I think it will lead to a few surprises about ''bolters'' and ''sliders'' depending on where media commentators (and fans!) rate players. Not least of which me - I definitely have different value ratings on players than Twomey's prognostication!

Cal Twomey Phantom has us selecting:
Pick 12 - Nik Cox
Pick 15 - Heath Chapman
Pick 18 - Bailey Laurie
Pick 24 - Luke Pedlar
Pick 30 - Shannon Neale
I rate Chapman higher than both but I don't see a good reason to take him above Macrae or Perkins (preferably Perkins, some more speed in the midfield for the future is a need) especially if we've locked away Nik Cox at that stage as well.

The Neale pick is a bit, meh. I like what he does and think he'll be a good ruck in the future but we have more pressing needs currently, not just to suit my Bigfooty Phantom picks but I really rate Tom Highmore for this spot, ex-giants academy as well so knows the club. Cam Fleeton is another that can play tall or small that'd be good to have developing at the club.

Overall though, I'd be pretty happy with this haul all things considered, still preferring a couple of players that are available at our picks but this would be a nice mix of instant impact and long term prospects.

Obviously the Ginnivan links seem pretty strong, and if we get him in the rookie draft I'd be ecstatic, that'd represent great value.

Also FWIW, and it may not be much, but it seems this year Twomey is taking a lot more stabs in the dark, a lot of what he's saying is conflicting with what a lot of others are, usually him and guys like Balmer from FoxFooty agree on essentially every pick rumour/ about the first round, but it's not like that this year, so I'm expecting this to be a lot more wrong than in previous years, that's why I'd not get my hopes up about us getting Cox or Reid

I think it’s a good chance. Most clubs only rate the top 25 with confidence and are petrified after that. I think it will be a record low numbers drafted with clubs being super conservative. We are lucky as all our picks are pretty much in the hitting zone. Wouldn’t be surprised if we trade out the last one if we get a nice offer. Would be super if we got a future pick.

Fleeton has a connection to GWS in that he played as a junior with Geelong West Giants, and visited GWS on 'match day' trips in Sydney (at the boys own expense) a few years. The trips were always great value and GWS were always great hosts.

Listening to the draft countdown show and a number of identities I’ve gleaned this:

Adelaide probable bid on Ugle-Hagen and if not them North will bid or Sydney latest.

Adelaide probably leaning to Thilthorpe as their top selection.

North open minded but suspect Holland’s could be their guy. Sydney then take Granger-Barrass and Hawks take Phillips.

Essendon could really f*** our plans. Could see them taking Reid, Cox and Perkins which I would think are at the top of our list. The coach is clearly a fan of the two tall defenders and mentioned both favourably. Even if we do a mooted trade with Crows for pick 9 we might still miss our two top guys which would be unfortunate.

Tanner Bruhn is very highly regarded by the top recruiters, if we miss our top talls he might be the one that falls to us.

Interesting 30 hours or so!

No point trading up to 9 (i.e. effectively 1 place!) at the cost of a first round pick if the guys we really want are gone. The next best could have a blanket thrown over them ... a perception of who's better rather than a reality (IMHO).
