I am going to sit on any predictions for the defensive set up for 2021 until I see where our final DFA & draft selections sit.

If we go and get Shane Savage, I'd be surprised if it was just as 'depth' when we've lost so much experience down back. Whether or not we would put him and Lachie down back I'm not so sure ... there's a couple of permutations that could come into play depending on what else happens.

I think it will be difficult to pick up two decent KPDs this year, due to limited number of quality options, and others after them. Whether they play next year or are developing for 1-2 years will depend on who they are.

If we trade up to say Hawthorn's pick (which IMHO would be the earliest one for sale with what we've got), they we might get DGB - if we're even targeting a tall. If we're after Hollands or Phillips, then we'll really struggle to draft a KPD. Perhaps someone like Callow at 20 or 29 might be there. If we got DGB, though, I expect he'd play from round 1 essentially straight into Corr's vacated position (though Taylor, provided he's fit, would pick up the KPD #2 role). If that was the case, I would not see the need for another tall, and come back next year to pick up someone who slides in at the bottom of the pile when Davis retires in a few years.

If we take Heath Chapman, with our #10 or #13 pick, and if Reid or Cox was still there at our #15 pick, then maybe we'd grab them as a direct replacement in a couple of years (as Chapman won't replace Davis).

I can see a number of permutations depending on what we end up with.

And yes ... sign Lachie Ash up as soon as possible in the new year as a priority.

I had the Giants when I joined the Lystics Podcast for their annual mock draft. I’m not overly happy with how I went with some players I really wanted not available. Here is a link and the players I took

Pick 10 O’Driscoll
Pick 13 Henry
Pick 15 Maher
Pick 20 Ford
Pick 29 Heath
Pick 52 Fleeton

That's different to many I've seen. I've seen a number have O'Drisoll and Henry come our way, the rest is a little different

I reckon in a mock draft with everyone who knows what they are doing it would be harder than it is for the actual draft teams. They'd have more knowledge about what other clubs are likely to do than you guys. Harder to know what is likely to be available around the time you select.

I like Reid a lot off the highlights given it doesn’t look like we will be able to trade up. I think Essendon might grab him though. Love the way he uses the ball. Perkins looks high risk/reward. Bruhn could be around the mark. We are in spots where we could benefit from sliders as teams like Adelaide often go left of centre.

Port Adelaide are well stocked to place a bid on Lachie Jones, which could come as early as GWS’ multiple selections in the teens (13 and 15).

The Giants have been linked to Oakleigh Chargers small forward Bailey Laurie and Geelong Falcons midfielder Tanner Bruhn, while Adelaide could call out Victorian talls Conor Stone or Liam Kolar with their selections in the early 20s.

Outside chance he gets to 10 (which will probably be 12 or 13)
If I was a betting man I'd be saying Reid is gone but Cox and Chapman are available at our first, I'm happy with any of the three, but think Reid is the best for us in terms of replacing a guy like Davis

I am with you in being disappointed at those picks.

Nick Cox & Heath Chapman both available at that first pick for GWS, who would fill one of the holes in our defensive line which should be an absolute need for GWS - much more than yet another inside (defensive) mid with poor disposal IMHO.

Maher is well early - don't mind him as a player filling a GWS need: but not at #15 - I'd take Jack Carroll ahead of him: able to play out of the half back defensive line initially and progress into a balanced midfielder later; probably the perfect result for us IMHO.

I don't really rate Ford that highly, but in the context of other picks, don't mind taking a risk (high risk but potentially high reward) with the fourth selection. This is where I'd see Maher in contention for real.

I don't see a need for Heath, GWS has plenty of ruck options having brought Preuss in, with Flynn & Briggs developing - what we've missed out on iwith these selections is any KPD - where we're actually deficient IMHO.

So this means we are taking a DFA or a PSD pick?
No, not needing to but still possible: we have 31 players and a minimum of 36 main list spots to fill - so the 5 picks we have fits with that. The last two spots would be Reid plus one - we could just re-select Sproule (as we've said we might). But we could take a DFA such as as Savage on either the main list or rookie list for the 42nd spot on our list. Alternatively, we could also just leave the spot vacant.

I never expected that we'd use pick 52 anyway.

If we trade two (or more) picks for a single earlier selection, then we'd be committed to taking a DFA as we'd be short of the 36 main list requirement.

Twomey's final phantom guide which links a few players to various clubs such as:

The wildcard of the top five. The Hawks have done their homework on Perkins and he's a shot for pick No.4. Essendon has had a look, but Perkins could also get through for Greater Western Sydney (pick No.10) and North Melbourne (No.11) to select.

Bruhn considered by clubs to be more unlikely than likely to feature in the top 10, although the Bombers and Giants do have an interest. North is a chance, but could he get to Richmond at No.17?

Essendon and Greater Western Sydney are the clubs most linked to Reid as both look to restock their young talls.

The Bombers have shown their interest in Cox, as have the Giants with one of their first-round selections. If he got as far as Collingwood's pick they would be a likely home.

Chapman's another player who is in the mix for the Giants' selections, while Fremantle and the Kangaroos would also look closely. Collingwood, with its pair of first-round picks, could also consider Chapman.

So, if I could have my way with the draft ... an unlikely but not completely impossible outcome for (IMHO) perceived needs would be:

  • Heath Chapman - can replace Corr in defence but provide precision kicking and running rebound from D50, able to play round 1 2021 IMHO
  • Finlay Macrae - essentially replaces Jye Caldwell as inside/outside midfielder, not zippy but composed & dual sided kicker with good decision-making
  • Zach Reid - will take a couple of years to fully develop as a KPD, but that timeframe fits with Keeffe then Davis likely wind-down/retirement
  • Jack Carroll - some zip, good in the contest, courageous, precision kicking and good decision-making; can start on HBF (so possible Zac W replacement) but considered likely to develop into an inside/outside midfielder
  • last pick 'd be happy to reach a bit for X-factor: so a bid on Errol Gulden, Eddie Ford if he's still there, Isiah Winder or Brodie Lake; other options would be Bailey Laurie, Brayden Cook, Zavier Maher, Caleb Poulter, Jack Ginnivan
As I've said a number of times, a defender is an absolute need for me, but I see Chapman as a better option right now than Cox or Reid as he's ready to go straight away as a third tall, and has rebounding characteristics that will help offset the loss of all of Shaw, Williams & Corr. A balanced mid with good disposal is also a need; Macrae I worry about Bulldogs coming knocking for him in 2 years (but if he's good, make them pay!) - Tanner Bruhn is an alternative who could slip down the draft order and fill that same need (the worry on him being his injury). Reid is not then an immediate need, but if he's still there at where our pick #15 ends up, I'd take him to give him 2-3 years development time to take over from Davis. (A future backline of Reid, Taylor, Chapman & an ageing Haynes would seem pretty nice.)

I like Jack Carroll: a December birthdate says he's likely to have lots of upside on a good starting point. He should be the #15 selection on needs, and if both Reid and Cox were gone, I would. Able to play HBF initially, so if Kennedy or Cumming can't seal a spot as Zac's replacement, he could come into calculations quite quickly. And the upside would be an ability to go into a balanced midfielder role in the future. Then there would be plenty of options for the last pick IMHO. We could look at a small/medium forward based on replacing Zac Langdon, or another midfielder to replace Jackson Hately (but I'd tend to go outside or another balanced mid given how we used Hately, or at least a mid with speed), or a utility/multi-role player.

So now, recruiting team, don't **** this up. It's an important draft for us!

I know he’s not in our reckoning but with all the hype I decided to watch these Jamarra Ugle-Hagan highlights.

He really looks very classy, good overhead, moves nicely, reliable left boot.

Have to say though he really reminds me much more of a considerably better version of Jeremy Finlayson than Buddy Franklin. All his mannerisms are similar to Finlayson, it’s like watching a clone (other than the chase down tackle 🤣).

They are getting a good one no doubt but he’s no Franklin, different style of player.

The Franklin comparisons are lazy and borderline racist tbh, much better comparison is Josh Kennedy imo, or, and dogs fans wouldn't want to hear it, a little Josh Schache about him

This would be a dream draft, only thing I'd personally nitpick is I want Bruhn over Macrae is available, same amount of class, athleticism (or lack of) and damage but better at winning ball and kicking goals.
That last pick, I'm liking Lake as an option (Adrian if you're reading this please choose him), super athlete that's played just about every position on field to a good quality at SANFL level, probably a reach at the pick number it'll end up being but as a development project there are worse options being touted at higher picks

It’s Stone’s mix of endurance, acceleration and speed that has clubs believing he could become a full-time midfielder in the future, given he ran a time of 6:35 in the 2km time trial and 2.95s in the 20m sprint at the recent Victorian draft combine. Stone’s overhead marking and athleticism inside 50 appeals to clubs, with Adelaide (Pick 9), GWS (Picks 10, 13 and 15) and Collingwood (Picks 14 and 16) linked with the prospect. There is also a feeling among recruiters Stone could be utilised in defence at AFL level.

Archie Perkins is another likely top-10 bolter given Hawthorn (Pick 4) and Essendon (Picks 6, 7 and 8) have done plenty of work on the medium forward, who is unlikely to get past GWS at Pick 10. The Giants seem likely to use at least one of their picks on a tall defender, with Zach Reid, Nik Cox and Heath Chapman in their sights.
