This is clearly just a hypothetical considering Taranto isn't leaving, but if he were to request a trade, how does Zach Merrett sound as a replacement? GWS already have a ton of inside mids so that won't be an issue. Merrett would complement your midfield very well as an inside/outside player with great skills.
Some reports state that Merrett may be displeased with the club so he could be gettable for opposition teams.
I clearly wouldn't want to lose Merrett, but if both players want out, then this can be making the most of a bad situation.
Even if Taranto settles on leaving GWS , I highly doubt he would choose us ahead of other VIC clubs. They wouldnt be too far apart you'd think. I m pretty sure Taranto is happy and I cant see us parting with him. but in the hypothetical scenario that neither were happy, that would seem a reasonable trade, assuming similar money etc
You'd think second rounder is about the mark, maybe with us giving a bit back. Depends on what happens with the other guys. The more we sign, the less likely we are to keep, and the price falls.Even if Taranto settles on leaving GWS , I highly doubt he would choose us ahead of other VIC clubs.
XOH is probably a more realistic target for us. What do you guys think an acceptable offer for him is? Obviously wouldn't cost as much as GWS would hope. We don't really have a second rounder.

He is no chance to be released earlyTaranto wouldn't even relieve salary cap pressure as he was signed before winning the B+F.
Matt Bain, Taranto's manager, laughed off the suggestion that the former number two pick, who was the Giants' best and fairest winner last year, could be moving.
"There's zero truth in it. It will not be happening. He signed last year until the end of 2022 and he loves the club, he loves it up there. Tim Taranto is not leaving," said Bain.
Preuss, 25, has attracted interest from GWS who are doing their research on the hulking ruckman, while Sydney is also in the conversation.
The Giants have queries about Preuss’ ability to cover the ground and spread. He is a monster of a man at 206cm and 114kg.
If GWS trade in Preuss you'd think they'd delist one of Flynn or Briggs (assuming Mumford plays on).
Flynn contracted until 2021 and Briggs until 2022... they aren’t going anywhere. If GWS trade in Preuss you'd think they'd delist one of Flynn or Briggs (assuming Mumford plays on).
You don't carry 4 ruckmen on your list - particularly in the upcoming era of reduced list sizes.

So Giants will carry 4 ruckmen?
And given Preuss is still quite young he'll be directly competing with Flynn and Briggs for the #1 ruck spot?
I agree if they sign Pruess and re-sign Mumford that is a concession you don't think the kids are good enoughIf GWS trade in Preuss you'd think they'd delist one of Flynn or Briggs (assuming Mumford plays on).

Veteran ruckman Shane Mumford is expected to remain on the Giants' list in 2021 with the club set to offer the 34-year-old a new deal as they look to retain him as back-up to be used in case of emergency.
The Giants are on the lookout for a new ruckman after the retirement of Sam Jacobs, who lost form in 2020 after crossing from Adelaide as a free agent, with Melbourne's Braydon Preuss one of several ruckmen being monitored as they look to boost their ruck stocks.
They are waiting on key forward Jeremy Cameron to make a decision on his future while they are also in discussions with young midfielder Jye Caldwell, Jackson Hately and Xavier O'Halloran about their next contracts.
The Giants are increasingly confident that Caldwell will stay despite significant interest from St Kilda while Hately is weighing up whether to return to Adelaide, with the prospect of playing as an inside midfielder attractive.
Seems odd. Even Ben Brown was $850k p.a. wasn't it reported?$700k pa for Cameron is a massive low ball offer compared to the going KPF rate - look at Lynch for example. If that's true we're not even really looking to keep him.![]()
I don’t mind it. He season was poor. We have to stop overpaying players. Simple.$700k pa for Cameron is a massive low ball offer compared to the going KPF rate - look at Lynch for example. If that's true we're not even really looking to keep him.![]()
a) he won the Coleman last year. Why does this year become dominant when it comes to a long term contract? Normally it's a combination of recent form and expected future production.I don’t mind it. He season was poor. We have to stop overpaying players. Simple.
He did get well overpayed in his last contract. We do have a history of following the big paycheque up with a smaller one - players seemingly understand that they’ve been setup financially - so they can take a cut so other players can have their turn, so to speak.a) he won the Coleman last year. b) while I agree about overpaying players, $700k for a top three or better KPF is so far off market rate it's laughable. If you compare player contracts to production, we're paying way above top market rate for a medium forward and we're paying Cogs like a top 10 midfielder.
Overpaying someone of Cameron's role, age, and demonstrated production would be about $1.5m pa based off the contracts of similar players like Buddy, Hawkins, Lynch and others. We're not even approaching half that.
(All comments are assuming the mooted figure is correct, as that's the only one we have currently.)
I like the club has a price and is sticking to it. That said if Cameron walks.... we are stuffed for 2021 IMO.
I’m backing him to stay
Paid too much for Cogs etc and now this is the result. Can't have everyone on big deals. Agree he could command a lot more on the open market.$700k pa for Cameron is a massive low ball offer compared to the going KPF rate - look at Lynch for example.
