North get absolutely screwed on that. Higgins for 11 would be a good deal (only because of age), throw in having to pay all that extra salary though makes it very unattractive. Probably close enough to fair for us, freeing up cash prob makes it a good deal, very good deal for Geelong, Melbourne prob okish (depending on their salary cap position)

Honestly, I think they can't meet the minimum sal cap spend over the next few years, so getting Pick 11 instead of 33 (which will end up 40 or so after academy/compo), would satisfy a need, whilst not really losing anything (paying Polec 700K, Hall a bit, losing Goldstein soon, there's evidence they are so flush with salary cap they don't know what to do with it). Reckon they'd take a salary hit, if it meant getting a young gun player. North would already be paying half Higgins' salary if we got him, so it's really just McDonald's salary they'd be paying, in order to move up 25+ spots in the draft order

I'd also be happy if we paid all of Higgins' salary and gave up Pick 18, but I think they'd probably prefer the much better pick instead of 300K they can't even spend, IMO

Interest in Tom McDonald
Cripes, he's the last guy I'd be targeting. Not a good forward - had one decent year, but now his physical condition seems to be an impediment - possibly useable as a defender, but on way too high wages for what he delivers. If we're spending that on him, we're almost at Jezza wages for far, far, far less a player. And then if we play him, are we impacting on developing Riccardi? (Yes, we could drop him back or Harry back - acknowledged.)

A hard no from me - not that my opinion is worth anything!

We have had worse
Gee, that sets the bar low.
What's killing our culture is the yearly escapee free-for-all. Churn & agitation, each year the club has to re-set the agenda and playing group. High draft picks that want to leave as soon as they can back to their schoolboy friends & Mum & Dad.
The club paying overs just to keep a backbone of players in tact.
Massive year-long indecisions by Coniglio (yay) Cameron (nay) that suck the energy and belief out of the club and supporters..
& then we get to trying to coax good coaches north to GWS , and the pattern repeats.
Eg, Luke Power now happily camped at Carlton.
High draft pick compensation is turning out like emotional spending. You didn't really want the product anyway.
We've become a trade/ sell club, mercilessly picked apart by established club ghouls.

With Jye going, that could simplify things much further. We could give Carlton Pick 7 for 13 and 18, without asking for anything back - so you're getting more for Caldwell. They could then pass 13 on to you for Caldwell, and then pass 18 on to Essendon for Saad and their 2nd

You end up with Pick 9 + our Pick 13

This is turning into a horrible trade period.
I think we need to turn these picks (and free cash) into an established player or 2 as well as early picks.

I think we'll get a first rounder for Jye and a sweetener,
As you said the good thing is we are going to get a shit load of early pics.

The bad thing is the culture if this is happening

The problem is that all clubs will have an ability to scrounge together above average wages for 1 player. 10 clubs in Victoria can therefore throw excess $ at one GWS or GCS player. Only needs 2 or 3 clubs to do that every year and our good and second level players get picked apart .... and when it's tempting them home for overs or more opportunity ... it's an easy decision for them to leave. Irrespective of the culture here. They have left at free agency - when it's largely a free hit for trading value - or early in their career before they are established and therefore cheaper trading value.

Look at who's gone that have been good players - Treloar, Shiel, Steele, McCarthy, Cameron, Williams, Corr, Caldwell: all gone over a fair price for what they are (age/position/experience/capability).

And Gil thinks there's not a problem. The reality is - it's not a ''national comp'' it's just a Victorian comp with a couple of WA/SA appendages that squeak by most years, but for the northern states it's hard work for little reward.

5yrs @ 500k for Caldwell. In and out of the side with injury history. I'd be taking that too if I was him
That is the money Jack Steele is on let that sink in

Take a deep breath.

The sun will rise in the morning and the Giants will be there in round 1 2021.

I actually think Cameron out improves our forward structure. We have for years predictably bombed it in to Cameron only to have a 3rd up defender knock the ball away and the balls zips up the other end. Time to get smarter. Finlayson, Himmelberg, Riccardi all capable KPF.

We still have the required 5 A graders to contend (Haynes, Whitfield, Coniglio, Tarranto, Greene)

More role-players are exactly what we need.

I would be asking for a first rounder and Clark from Geelong for Cameron.

We don't need players who don't want to be there. Particularly kids who are impatient. All this leaving means we can also pay the players who want to stay what they deserve.

With cap room now available it may be the last year of big exits. There is always a silver lining.

Josh Kelly too
Better than coniglio imo

Gutted to lose Caldwell, genuinely think he’s going to be a very good player. Probably wouldn’t be have mattered but he should’ve played more games and had more opportunities in the guts, but maybe he made his intentions clear.
