Swapping next years first for GCs #5 this year so we can draft a decent big, and speed up the development of the team...?
No way... next years draft is quality and it could conceivably be a top 3 pick

Pretty sure he does iirc. Watched a couple of Claremont games on 7. The games I saw I thought he was OK. Not up to the hype but it was a small sample size. Freo seem to like him and obviously they would know better.Crickey...he kicks just like his old man. If he's even remotely close to his old man's kicking, he's worth a punt. That left peg was deadly.

He is just having a smack at us. Trading up, as you say is unrealistic, plus there are terrific local prospects at our existing picks, and they are list fits as well.As much as a flog Sumich is, Grainger-Barrass is a great pick as well. Even as a defender could still use those glue hands up forward.
BUT how the hell are we even going to trade up? Our earliest pick is 12. Albeit a few bids, it might slide to 13-15. The one after is second round .
No one is going to accept any offer of those picks, unless we throw the future bath water and add first round picks for next year. Good idea, but no thanks Sumo.
The WA bias is a bit sick.Saying kids leave at 24, 25 and we re wrong in picking up Cerra and Brayshaw.. no wonder why no club has him coaching.

If our first selection in 2021 is a top 3 pick, something is seriously wrong at the football clubNo way... next years draft is quality and it could conceivably be a top 3 pick

I don’t know about stats but I can’t recall many draftees we ended up losing to the go home factor. Harley BalicHe is just having a smack at us. Trading up, as you say is unrealistic, plus there are terrific local prospects at our existing picks, and they are list fits as well.
It’s worth noting as part of the discussion that Pavlich and Mundy are not locals.
Has any of the journos done any analysis of the risks/rewards involved in preferring locals? The implied compromises in the draft include reaching for players, ignoring positional needs, and undervaluing interstate talent. Sumich seems to be highlighting the go home factor as a concern and I would be interested to see that supported statistically. That includes the costs and rewards from go home trades. Sumich could use Judd as an example (it wouldn’t support his idea of preferring locals), but collating the stats and interpreting them would be interesting.

And Weller as go home is debatable. But while Neale wasn’t go home factor there would be an argument that if he was local he wouldn’t have moved.I don’t know about stats but I can’t recall many draftees we ended up losing to the go home factor. Harley Balic, Ed LangdonPLAYERCARDSTARTHarley Balic

I’d be taking best available over home-grown and backing in our progress on and off field to retain more of them than we lose.
Yeh he throws out a comment like that with no real concept of how that is possible. Yes DGB looks like a talent and will probably become an exceptional player but the only way of getting say number 4 or 5 is to offer this first rounder & next year’s first rounder.
2 first rounders for a player which hasn’t played a game? I don’t think so! If DGB becomes a good player Sumich & his mates will sit back and say I told you so. If he turns out to be a bust or injury plagued you’ll never hear from them.
He’s not a smart cookie Sumich.
I think there is a recent article that indicates the return from 2 later picks (beyond pick 5 but certainly pick 15) doesn’t compare well to pick 1 or 2?no not quite right - two late first rounders (being say 15 this year and 14 next) is a very good deal for a player of the calibre of Jamarre Ugle-Hagen...dont need any convincing the "untried" won't be a success barring sound psycho assessment prior and no injury. Tilthorpe too would be worth it. But Freo were never going down that path anyway.
Just how good is next years draft and what tall forwards are likely to have a showing at the top?
Yeh I could have stopped with that comment.Amen to that. He couldn't find his arse with a mirror on a stick

Next year’s draft apparently is looking awesome, especially for midfielders. Coming in behind them is an outstanding WA KPF prospect (van Rooyen). I hope we are playing the longer game with him in our sights. Definitely don’t want points deficits or dumb trades impacting next year.
Nothing. What did you sell for next season?

yep it was easier back then. At times clubs were humble and things were simple. That pick 24 got us the legendary Nick Suban. Now days that pick 24 would push back to 30-35 due to NGA picks, Father son picks and compo picks.Remember when we let Robbie Warnock go for pick 24, but we originally wanted pick 6. The AFL staged a mediation and that was the result. Those were the days
