No AFL game on FTA TV in Melbourne last night, whilst there was a competing NRL match (2nd vs 4th) on FTA TV in Sydney.

That's right. Even with a big NRL game on and the game on at an 810 start, 50k FTA is certainly not great for Swans v Giants. But 33K for the storm in Melbourne against the other dominant team of the last several years with no AFL game on FTA AND with a stage 4 lock down in Melbourne is pretty terrible.

From the SMH today regarding NRL ratings decline.

"However, there are concerns that bigger blowouts are one of the factors behind a disturbing decline in NRL TV ratings. The Sun-Herald revealed last month that more than a million viewers – or a quarter of the NRL’s television audience – had tuned out since the ratings surge when the game resumed."

"Global Media and Sports boss Colin Smith – who has previously helped the NRL broker its broadcast deals – said blowouts, coupled with the poor performance of the Queensland teams, were bad for business.
He said the decline of the Broncos in particular – a team that has a monopoly on the prime-time free-to-air slots – was a major factor.

"AFL is out-rating the NRL because the Lions and the Gold Coast Suns are doing well in Queensland,” Smith said".

Given the number of critics of Mr V'L on this thread, here is some food for the chooks, ....
Mr V'L is going pretty well suing the ABC in his full time role as CEO of Racing New South Wales.

Private emails sent during production of 7.30’s racing expose to be released in Peter V’landys defamation trial

Justice Michael Wigney described Mr V’landys’s allegation that the ABC had intended to use the report to maximise harm to his reputation as “very serious”.

Last week, barrister Bruce McClintock SC, appearing for Mr V’landys, said the ABC acted with “malice” when it spliced an interview he had done in good faith with graphic footage of horses being slaughtered that he had not seen or been told about.

“The program is basically a set up designed to get Mr V’landys on, under false pretences, and then make him look appalling by showing around the interview with him, this horrifying footage of horses being appallingly, badly treated,” he said.

I can’t believe The Australian would publish a story that implies that the ABC did something wrong. That only happens on a day that ends with ‘y’.

Which is also coincidentally the day that Kwality makes a post relating to one of two or three obsessions of his with an awkward hypocritical reference to other people's biases

Still moaning about the central industry metric. This is the reason the AFL has signed a $160M extension with 7 and channel 9 apparently want to pay less than half of that for the NRL.

Regional ratings are less reliable, less comprehensive coverage (of regional tele) and less commercially relevant

Well if Foxtel are "thrilled" (according to the NRL) to an 18% increase for NRL viewers, one wonders what adjective they would use to describe the 34% increase for AFL viewers (almost double the NRL increase!) -

Add in the massive ch7 AFL ratings (compared to the NRL on ch9) and the AFL viewing numbers are so far ahead this year that it's not longer close.

I do thank Pip for drawing attention to this.

Lockdowns in Melbourne helped tremendously

A question Wookie. Have the combined number of subscribers for Foxtel Fox Now and Kayo reached the same as Foxtel before the different new brands were introduced?

Massive numbers for the AFL last night....

....and some more gutting news for the likes of Pippen94 and his mates......just 20K watched the first A League final!!!!! Ouch :)
Wouldn't that be because finals are bullshit, and all real fans got excited when Sydney got handed the trophy at the game they lost several weeks ago, that no one watched?

On moto g(6) plus using BigFooty.com mobile app

Yeh, but 250k are watching on Kayo :)

Also, the tv audiences would be a lot bigger if their 8,000 crowds were allowed in. It's a unique experience in Australian sport 🤣
