Geelong has offered Greater Western Sydney two first-round draft picks to secure superstar forward Jeremy Cameron.
The Herald Sun has revealed the Cats have put two first-round picks – No. 15 and No. 20 – as part of a strong and generous bid to break the trade deadlock with the Giants.

The Cats have said they want a second-round pick back as part of the deal, in-line with other trades for jet midfielders Dylan Shiel and Adam Treloar in recent years.

But the Herald Sun has confirmed the Giants have already indicated they will knock back the offer because they want more for the superstar full forward.

GWS want either a player or a third first-round pick from Geelong as part of the deal.

It sets the scene for a tense finish to the AFL trade period as the Cats believed their offer was a fair one.

Geelong has made it clear to the Giants their offer – which was submitted today from list manager Stephen Wells to GWS list boss Jason McCartney – won’t include a third first-round choice before Thursday night’s 7.30pm deadline.

The Cats believe they acted generously in negotiations this morning.

The fresh impasse means the Cats will give further consideration to walking Cameron through to them in the pre-season draft.

Geelong are certain Essendon won’t take Cameron in the pre-season draft, allowing him to walk through to the Cats.

The Cats and Bombers could also secure a first-round pick swap where Essendon give No. 7 or No. 8 (from Carlton for Adam Saad) to Geelong for No. 13 and No. 20.

No Geelong player has indicated they want to move north to the Giants as part of the Cameron deal.

The Cats have picks No. 13, No. 15 and No. 20 and want to land Shaun Higgins from North Melbourne with a second-round pick.

GWS has pick No. 31 and is set to receive second or third-round picks back for the departures of Jackson Hately and Jye Caldwell.

But the Giants will also need to use a second or third-round pick on ruckman Braydon Preuss from Melbourne.

Cameron wants to come to Geelong and help spearhead the club’s premiership tilt alongside Tom Hawkins next season.

The Cats have offered Cameron about $950,000 over as many as six years.

when you've got danger, hawkins and others retiring in 2-3 years you have to play for the here and now.
There under 30 group is nothing to scoff at either.

Agree on the first point, but they really don't have a huge amount of young talent outside a couple of players. Their most consistent players like Guthrie, Menegola, Duncan, Blicavs et al. are all nearing 30.
They are less trying to 'top up', and more trying to desperately bring in replacements for guys (Hawkins, Ablett, Selwood, Dangerfield, Taylor etc.) that to be honest, are irreplaceable.

As much as I love Higgo, he is no Gary Ablett Jr.

^this is not an encouraging list to look at.

IMO they would be better served trying to poach some young guns from other clubs with these first round picks (if they REALLY want to avoid the draft) rather than getting guys like Cameron and hoping like hell he will give them the same output as Hawkins (he won't).

Same strategy Hawthorn had for years. The bubble will inevitably burst as it has with the Maybloomers.

Bingo. You can get by with an alright group of youngsters if your multiple premiership core is still fit and firing, but if you aren't developing your young group to be anything other than supporting cast then it's only a matter of time before you crash headfirst into reality.

"Strong and generous bid", "their offer was a fair one", "acted generously" - the media really can't help but play cheerleader for the Cats.

It's just blatant!

EVery other club is supposed to do Geelong a good turn. Bizarre.

Brown is a one-dimensional lead up, mark, kick goal type forward. He's very good when the system caters to him but struggles otherwise. He applies very little forward pressure and isn't good when the ball hits the deck. He's not agile around the ground or dominant in the air and is limited to playing inside 50m which limits the game plan his team can employ (only really works with quick ball movement which is risky).

He kicked as many goals as he did for us because of the ridiculous amount of times he was targeted compared to the rest of the the comp.

Cameron regularly roams higher up the ground and can play as a link between the 50's. In addition to this he's very dangerous inside 50m due to his athletic ability in the air and when the ball hits the ground.

Brown also regularly roams higher up the ground....his ground covered stats are off the charts, more than our on ballers > 15km a game. I think media narrative starting to get in the way of actual empirical evidence. 2020 was an aberration in many many ways.

Agree, it's one of the reasons that I rate him so highly.

It will be interesting to see if he can get back to somewhere near his best for Melbourne. If he does (and I hope he does), he'll win them games.
That one from over the boundary line against WCE, even his opponent (McGovern) laughed and ran up and congratulated him.
