DGB a likely top 3 pick
Logan McDonald mentioned which is good coz I couldn’t understand why no watchers seem to rate him
O’Driscoll the other one mentioned from WA
McDonald kicked 4 straight in a Perth Snrs intra-club match last night.

Watch us grab McDonald and see DGB become the next Naughton. Or vice versa.

Watch us grab neither is a more likely result. I think Longmuir and the club recruitment probably view it in the same way as Collingwood and other clubs in as much as don't waste too much resources on trying to find an elite forward.

Seriously though, McDonald has a penchant for hauling a number of goals in a game (4+) in a game every 2 or 3 games which I really like and takes lots of marks whether he is on song or not. His first U18 champs game last year he didn't kick a goal but not for lack of marks in front of them, just nerves in front of goal. Then he irons those out the problems at each level and bang another 5 or 8 or whatever in one hit.

Really depends on who develops within the squad, if Henry plays wing/forward then that is a massive tick.
Only real weakeness is depth in the tall forwards, with Hogan, Dixon, Cox, yet to prove an reliable target.
Like last years draft picks McDonald if available seems a no brainer.
I mentioned in another post about O Allen already kicked 20 goals in 22 games, sometimes the best pickup
is also the safest option, if McDonald is consistent in scoring, assists, available what's not to like?

I know we don't have any list vacancies or long term injuries at the moment, but if something were to happen then I'd be looking at Henry Crauford from Norwood in the SANFL.

I like Sean Darcy and Lloyd Meek, but I'm always of the opinion that you can never have too many rucks. And the fact we resorted to David Hale playing in intraclub matches has to be concerning. Crauford is a 22 year old, 204cm and 99kg. I know Meek is a pretty good runner, but I reckon Crauford would have him on mobility and skills. He's only played a season of reserves for Norwood after coming down from the country, and yet was almost drafted last year. But they'll definitely find a spot for him in the seniors this year, and if that's the case then I'd be surprised if he makes it through the mid season draft.

Obviously not entirely relevant for us at the moment with no way of getting him, but I think he's the best ruck prospect at the moment and it's an area I also think we can improve. Just a random pre season thought from me.

Thanks Chris. If we were able to bring in a key back currently (or mid season) to help out cover injuries etc, who would you be looking at?

I'd again be sticking with the SANFL, it's ridiculous to me that Karl Finlay and Dyson Hilder weren't drafted last year. Both will play key roles in the North Adelaide league side this season as 19 year olds, and could help cover injuries if needed while also being genuine long term options. I just can't see how guys like Dillon O'Reilly and even Tobe Watson are better than Karl Finlay.

Nice insight Chris. They both look the goods from the short videos available online. Any recommendations for tall forwards?

FWIW I reckon we will have at least one spot available when Hogan goes on the LTI list for his issues.

I'd stick one of Chris' blokes on the list and start training O'Reilly as a forward again.

They have been training O'Reilly both forward and back. Not sure what you mean by again?

He's been pretty average during the pre season. Perhaps the weakest kpp on the list.

I want him to just be a forward.

Yeah I don't really rate him but they obviously see something and he did kick goals as a junior.

Did I almost jinx both Darcy and Lobb...?

Off the top of my head, there aren’t any tall forwards I’d probably bother with. Guys like Crauford and Finlay are long term prospects, any tall forward would be a one year rental only.

If a forward went down, I’d pick up one of the guys I mentioned before and move Cox into attack again. Same with O’Reilly, and just give Dixon a shot.

Well he only lasted a day

Bump.

Just watched the futures game from last year. Western not overly impressive in hindsight, O’Dricoll does some good stuff. McDonald barely sighted. A couple of enormous clunking lads we could consider up forward, but no Roughies. Meanwhile Sydney have another academy gun who looks amazing.

Ugle Hagan not sighted really in this game either until allowed to float across half back. It was a frustrating game if you were a deep forward.

I’m not sure why we are complaining about hiding our talent in this case? At this point most draft watchers have Joel western going in the late thirties or even further. If he’s bid on at pick 40 or after I think we can pick him up for peanuts? I read somewhere that an NGA bid from pick 40 onwards can be matched with just simply your next pick in the draft - can anyone confirm?
If we can draft two good high-end talents with our first 2 picks like DGB, O’Driscoll, McDonald, Zane trew, even Elijah Hollands if he slid to our pick following his ACL injury (would be a gamble but he’s supposedly an elite talent), then add Western and Brandon Walker with later picks or rookie picks, we will be well set up to challenge over the next decade PROVIDED we retain all the young talent on our list. We still haven’t seen Valente yet either, hopefully he’s fully fit after the lockdown and gets an opportunity. A lot to be excited about at freo over the next few years if we can keep the high end talent together.

Quite a few other clubs have NGA, F/S players which may reduce bids in general terms as well. With Western in particular, I think the likelihood of an interstate club bidding on a diminuative, NGA listed prospect, in a year where they will get limited opportunity to see them in action is pretty low.
