When it comes to picking players at the draft it’s fascinating to look back say 10-12 years at older drafts and think about the players selected in the context of the time that has passed since then. Example: the 2007 draft.

We selected Rhys palmer at 7. Dangerfield went pick 10. Harry Taylor 17, Rance 18. Cyril Rioli was 12.
Now I’ve got no idea what our list needs were at the end of 2007 season. But it’s kind of irrelevant what they were. The fact is all the guys I Mentioned are quite different types of players. (ok Taylor and Rance are KPD but still).
But would we have found a place for any of them in our team for the next decade or so? Of course we would. Regardless of what the list needs were in 2007 when the draft took place.
It’s the strongest argument in favour of taking the likes of DBG if he is rated higher but slides to our first pick. We will find a place in our team for him in due course if he’s that good. Having too many good players for one area of the ground is not a bad problem and not one we have had too often in our 25 year history. There are options to deal with that situation if it does arise. Trading away someone good who can’t crack the 22 for a decent pick etc.

Palmer was just the player we needed, a hard running and working mid in the era where hard work made up for suspect ball use.

Dangerfield made it clear he would able staying in Victoria for the first year of his rookie contract.

Taylor was a mature pick

In hindsight Dangerfield could have stayed in Victoria till 2011 and you’d still pick him ahead of Palmer or indeed anyone else. Probably one of the best players of all time by the time his career is over. If he played for us from 2012-15 we surely would have won one flag at least in that period.

He is good but he is not that good.

Good teams seem to draft depth with first round picks for example wet toast drafting Brander pick 12 along with Allen while still having full stock of KPF players.
They do have to be highly rated though which many KPF players are this draft....
Both were sliders on draft night especially Allen.

Sometimes you just have to pick best available.

I’m going to double down on this..

So I was referring to him
Not being best 22... a glad bag of things go into consideration of best 22... his form on the field, his form off the field and any injuries he is carrying and long term impact..
Just to clarify, you don't think Hogan was B22 at Melbourne when he was traded?

Just had a gander at the WA team list and the standout for me is East Framantle’s contribution is 1. The Sharks have traditionally been a nursery but it looks pretty lean. The Gero area has provided countless stars to the AFL ranks so what’s happened to development in the mid west?

Jack Carroll and Brandon Walker both injured

I need to play nice since I’m a mod over there, but for those interested our friend Knightmare has admitted he doesn’t watch any non Victorian U18 football.

So Heath Chapman must be a hell of a player to still make his top 15. Lock him in for Fremantle then.

"It doesn't sound like you've been following me much on ESPN this year. I haven't been doing weekly reports or producing very much content this year compared to years past, and without Victorian junior footy I see no need.

With no Victorian footy and that being where the bulk of the talent comes from, there hasn't been much to do this year other than go through last year's U18 Champs and last year's NAB league with a focus on Victorian talent. And when there is only 4 of the top 9 from outside Victoria from my draft board, I feel I've invested my time precisely where it needs to be invested, particularly with so much of the good interstate talent part of club academies. There is more than enough games to have filled up my year to go through again to have strong positions on this year's Victorian talent."

Palmer was best available and followed up being drafted by winning the Rising Star. So far no-one has worked out how to draft using hindsight.

It isn't really about finding a place for DGB, who looks terrific. It is about creating a team that can consistently play finals. For me, if either Logue or Young can play in other positions DGB is an excellent option. Notionally, those two have AFL attributes that make us much more attacking than we currently are, and can help drive our forward potency.

I fully accept that occasionally a player is too good to pass up, and DGB may be that guy if he gets to our pick. But some of the options that look to be rated where our pick sits fit our needs well. The push for DGB seems WA related.

I agree with this statement but I wonder if it's just a function of being a good team. You draft a guy and your 18-24 is already pretty set so he's 'depth by definition for a couple of years.

We're almost there I think sans wing so tbh I don't really care if we do go KPD with the 1st. Walker and Western locked in helps a huge amount as they're exactly who we'd look at anyway.

Did we have any of next years NGA guys playing in the allstars game? Given they picked 44 lads, was it a surprise that Motlop or Farmer didn’t get invited? Or are they well off the pace still? I noticed a few underaged played suggesting these players like Van Rooyen and Johnson will be top 30 or so in the 2021 ND?

Motlop only played 2 or 3 WAFL matches and Farmer is projecting as a late/rookie pick. The bottom agers selected are the ones that are projecting high

Am assuming Richard Bartlett is injured and otherwise may have been selected.

Van Rooyen, Johnson and Bazzo are probably WA's likely prospects for the first round next year. Motlop and Draper could join names like Chipper, McVee, and Polson in the next rung down. We'll get a better read about Farmer and Colborne next year when they play more Colts.

Important to note that WA's draft eligible players this year are particularly strong - they smashed Vic Metro and Vic Country by like 10 goals each in u16s. Annoying we never got to see the u18s side. Next year, WA not nearly as strong relatively. But that could also mean we will see a few WA prospects bolt up the rankings.

Draper is 2022

That was dumb of me - I feel like I am missing someone now. McAdam is 2022 as well isn't he?
McAdam is 2022 yeah

Our 2021 group that I know of is Richard Bartlett/Jesse Motlop/Riley Colborne/Kobe Farmer/Seth Connor. There might be more but those are the most prominent players and they've all played WAFL this year

Could you please tell us about potential 2nd round onwards KPFs that might be worth a punt? I am more bullish than I used to be on non-first round KPFs given Tabs, Lewis, Brown and the other North dude whose name escapes me have shown you can get a decent or better player from there.

I think I read you don't rate Baldwin even without the ACLs?

Finally got around to watching the Colts Grand Final (Been pretty busy so I've only really had time to watch draft related stuff recently)

Gee Western is going to be an absolute steal if a bid comes for him around that 25-40 mark. Everytime I watch him he just has that work rate that makes him look good even if his team mates aren't playing well (such as in the granny). I haven't watched the All Stars match yet but I imagine it's probably most of the same from Western considering he got BOG.

I think he can go into the midfield straight away, even if he's quite small.

Thing that sticks out to me is how clean he is, pretty much never fumbles and his handballs are terrific. Did you see his ridiculous hand pass on the far wing in the GF? Could be an elite inside mid given his speed and hands if he can put on enough weight. Big IF though

His hands are just so clean, he's going to be very interesting to watch development wise

Would you guys take him ahead of Brandon Walker if the draft was held tomorrow?
Yes, only because Walker is a defender and Western fills more of a need. Walker is still incredibly talented and also has the speed that we want right now.
