If the player that comes up at our pick has clearly higher potential in the eyes of our recruiters then they should definitely pick them over perceived positional needs. For every good key forward in the comp picked in the teens there are 10 Michael Apeness's. Ultimately you can't field gaps on the field with spuds. I think our list is in such good shape with the amount of quality talent already here we can afford to just keep adding the best talent available. Fill the gaps with trading (and not hero trades for A graders. If you want cover for key forwards, then trade someone in who is prepared to play third fiddle)

Now of course our ranks might be different to the amateur draft watchers, or we might rate them more or less the same in that range. Who can say.

a 200cm dude who can run like that with those disposal skills isn’t attractive?
Tough room
That's kinda my point, his height is seducing people. IMO he's not going to be a key forward, he's not going to be a ruck, we have enough key backs. We can get better, albeit shorter midfielders for the price.

I reckon there's every chance Cox and Chapman are gone by our pick - Gold Coast will likely go tall, as will Essendon and North with at least one of their picks, GWS will probably take a tall with their first to get in ahead of others. A scenario like this (without bids) isn't a stretch by any means...

1. Adelaide - McDonald
2. North Melbourne - Phillips
3. Sydney - Grainger-Barras
4. Hawthorn - Hollands
5. Gold Coast - Reid
6. Essendon - Thilthorpe
7. Essendon - Perkins
8. Essendon - Bruhn
9. Adelaide - Cook
10. GWS - Chapman
11. North Melbourne - Cox

Interesting there's been no talk of Oliver Henry for us. Generally rated much higher than Eddie Ford, might not be on the board for us - but he's a good fit. Marking third tall forward, potential to develop off a wing. I'd take him ahead of most others, including Cox and Ford.

Reid at 5. That escalated quickly.

If that’s how it turns out, I’d go Carroll or O’Driscoll at our pick.

Reid at 5. That escalated quickly.

I've had him in firmly in the mix for the Suns for a couple of months. With Davies and Jeffrey coming in for free, I have them looking at Grainger-Barras or Reid. But even if you shuffle the order around, it's doubtful he'd get past Essendon if Thilthorpe was off the board.

Surely they can’t all be gunning for talls in the top ten? How often does that happen?

Archie Perkins seems to be well matched to the sort of player Freo will be looking for. Loves a goal, can break lines with pace etc. It'll be interesting to see whether he gets through to our pick.

Cox can be put almost anywhere, especially while he grows and develops. One thing you notice with his highlights is that he likes to be constantly on the move. How many give and gets did he do? Maybe that's why he's bending towards the back side of things as he's then got more ground he can cover. The wing might be just the spot for him, if he's in the side and the defence hasn't gone down in an injury shower, run him up and down the flanks, he can then be a lot more proactive and not have to rely on others as much for ball delivery as being stuck in the forward end often means.

It's interesting because of who is picking ahead of us.

Adelaide are going tall at #1, no doubt there. North have two picks before us, Essendon have three - you'd think they'll both take one tall given who they lost. Sydney have two smalls as NGAs, Gold Coast have a mid and a utility to prelist - one tall would have to be on the cards for each.

And if they are, grab a mid/medium, and look for talls next year or mid year. I like both Cox and Reid but they look way more speculative than Chapman.

What's Henry's pace like?

Looks good, reminds me of Jack Gunston.

Chris25 would you take Chapman if he was available at our pick?

I certainly wouldn't be unhappy with him. I would favour a half forward or outside mid personally, but Chapman would be a case of best available. Competition for spots is never a bad thing, and he'd be an upgrade on Hughes and Duman. While allowing Young to be a 100% attacking option.

I agree 100% that all the rated talls - JUH, DGB, Reid, McDonald, Tilthorpe, Cox and Chapman - will gone before our pick.

We could reach for someone like Callow or Max Heath but I cant see it. No alternative but to go best available.

This probably means one of McRae/Cook/Ford/Perkins/Carroll/Henry or O'Driscoll.

I do'nt know an awful lot about these players so I would plump for the local lad Carroll - bottom aged boy who can play inside or outside.

It would be really nice for the NGA's to be bid on late enough so we could grab Shannon Neale. But these sort of scenarios rarely play out in our favour.

Who would be better Callow or Neale if we manage to get a 2nd pick in before NGA? I'd probably go with Callow.
I would pick Callow any day of the week (I mean, I rate the kid at 11) but if our needs really are a ruck/forward like JLo has said in the past then I'd be surprised if we went past Neale. I've been wrong on who we're "definitely picking" in the past however

Jeez - just saw Oliver Henry’s highlights and am super impressed.
Moves like a cross between Rozee and Gunston.
Well balanced, fast feet (stepping, change of direction etc) and fast body movement.
Comfortable on both sides and sticky hands.
Prototype HFF .
Only downside for us is he seems a clone of Sturt (or what I hope Sturt will be).
Far more impressed with these highlights than Eddie Ford and others I’ve seen

I think we’ll be taking best available at our first pick, then trading back in after the first NGA bid for 1 or 2 talls, before rounding out with academy picks.

I still think Chapman could still available at our first pick. Duffield seems to think we are a certainty to pick him if he’s available

If we (and other clubs) rate Chapman, you have to imagine that we are doing what eDPS was doing and projecting him to roles outside what he is currently playing (Eg. CHB or HB to maybe tall midfielder). Don't get me wrong; as a "best available" pick he is more than worth it at our first round's range, but if we are only have him as a backman we either need to start shipping off others next year; there is no point in keeping a heap of them stocked up particularly when some have produced some good results. For mine the question is whether he can be a viable midfielder or better still a forward?

Henry does play a little like Sturt but given Sturt's injury history so far I can see that being a smart enough move; that is an area we could do with the backup and we do need options for the forward line.

I still have a niggle in the back of my mind that we will just go Carroll if we can't get Chapman; he has got some of the best foot IQ, speed and skills of the lot of these players and is an actual midfielder, rather than a forward or utility being projected as one like say Perkins or McHenry. Also to date he has averaged a good goal rate (0.9 per game), which is as good or better than players who have been playing forward only like Eddie Ford.

At the moment, I’m thinking Callow goes later than most expect.

I’d take Neale.
