Lloyd Meek will come on in leaps and bounds this year and put the argument to bed.

* He said with fingers and toes crossed.

This is one of the questions I'd like to bore the list manager with.

Does Lloyd Meek focus on being a ruckman, as in the number one ruckman of the side and make himself ready to step into that role or do you have him spend some time training in other roles to get a game into him?

From what I've seen, he looks to be more a pure ruck, but he has shown he can go forward and kick a few. Prior to his injury in 2019 he was really starting to find his feet in the Peel league side. He is a really good runner, and at 22 years old, 203cm and 105kg he could become a very handy player this year.

I think because we had no WAFL this year some of us have forgotten a few players that would have potentially been pushing up for a spot in the side. With Darcy, Meek and Lobb - plus Taberner and Cox as "break glass in emergency" backup I don't see the ruck as a huge problem and either Lobb or Darcy can be the ruck / forward. Whenever you have a +200cm guy in the goal square he is going to cause problems for opposition. Guys like Taberner, Fyfe and Sturt can play as the leading forwards and the smalls can feast on the crumbs.

In theory.

That worked for us against Port Adelaide with Scott Jones providing a contest to bring the ball to ground, back in 2018.

Back when we had no KPFs at all

They have persisted for a while with Meek's development so they must see something in him. Darcy dominates him in the intras, but Darcy pushes quite a few first-choice ruckmen around.

He's a huge unit is Meek. And in frighteningly good nick. If he could football, he would be a weapon. Ginger is completely right - if he becomes a player, it would really help.

Was looking as some draft test results the other day and saw that Meek tested high in the kicking efficiency test - although, also in the same year (2017) the previously mentioned, and demoted to rookie list Brisbane tall Connor Ballenden became the first player to finish with a 100% test result.

The problem is Lobb was borderline pathetic at times last year , scared to jump at centre bounces , pushed aside too easy at boundary throws , 50/50 kicking at goal from 20m out dead in front and next to no physical presence

Where did he finish in the Doig did he even crack the top 15 ?
So at 700 to 800k you can throw one of the worst value players in the AFL on top of all that

Hopefully the powers that be have a bit more spine than in the past and tell him we won’t be looking at a new contract unless we see a full year at the required level of intensity and aggression you would expect from a 200cm bloke who’s getting paid like a gun

Otherwise we end up with the next Kirk ****ing Tippett

Got to be wary of selecting a player purely on list needs with a first rounder. The bulldogs decided last year that they needed a small forward and reached (in my opinion) for Cody Weightman. I will trust our recruiters as they have a good track record since 2016. People saying Chapman could be like Mundy - I don’t really see it? Very few players kick the ball as good as D Mundy.
There is a big difference between not picking the bloke who plays the position we are easily the most stacked in (3rd tall defender), taking the next best prospect from any other position and reaching. I'm not advocating a reach which is why I asked if he was really that much better than the other prospects in that range. I don't think he is and as such I don't see how he makes any sense unless we are 99% sure he can play midfield.

You would have to think Chapman shows enough traits to the recruiters to project to be a winger or a midfielder for us to take him. I personally think he would be a great choice as by all reports the kid knows how to football, which on any part of the pitch is a great thing.
He must be quite similar size to Acres who I like as one of our wingers that drifts inside and think that's something Chapman could do.
Our recent history has shown us to be drafting driven individuals who a ready for the rigors of AFL mentally above all else. With the story of Chapman and his brother you can 'feel' that he will push himself as far as he can by that kind of motivation.

Those Meek stats read really well, in quite a few areas. If he becomes a bona fide AFL player, it really strengthens out list.
Few reserve games in those stats.

Meek looked quite good in the Auskick scratchies whilst in the hub etc. he seemed to be very close to getting a gamewhen there were about 4 games to go around the time we headed up to Cairns but did a leg injury missed about 3 weeks and ran out of time to get back for a debut. In 2019 he made progress from struggling early season, then demoted to reserves but finished well with his last 3 WAFL games.

A big 2021 coming for Meek being out of contract. Needs to debut obviously and show that deserves a née contract and can value add to the team. If he goes well we are in a good space ruckmen wise. I still think another developing ruck/fwd would be still in the draft plans regardless of moving on Dixon, McCarthy and Hogan. Perhaps that Ruck/fwd is now more a fwd/ruck which will work well if Meek shows a bit.

This is my last 10 cents worth on the topic of key forwards.

Our list is developing well but will not be in a realistic position to have a tilt at a flag for at least 2 seasons.

That 2 seasons would be precious time for the development of a CHF and KF/Ruck. Either we take the plunge in this draft which has a few decent options or we pay the price later. Its called forward thinking.

It is either this now or we are in a situation were we have a blue chip midfield with nothing to kick to aside from a couple of medium HFFs. Then we will be desperate and end up selling the farm to trade in a average tall ot two.

Forget about enticing top young talent like Naughton, McDonald or Jackson back if they are really any good.

Would you think Serong would be a better player if he was also so fast that he might be the fastest player in our squad?

That could be Western. Just imagine Serong winning the hard ball, flicking it off to Joel on the move and he has the whole field ahead of him to bomb it long to Mitch Crowden who started in the goal square.

I get that we need a tall marking option, take that player with pick #12.
The job in front of our recruiters has been there for a while now. I think they need to get a second pick in front of the NGA prospects.

Would not be surprised if our guys will not match a bid for Walker or Western if they are bid on prior to our second. Many of the mock draft are rating Walker in the top 25, but realistically, if he was not our NGA I doubt we would be looking at him even with our second - but the discount does give us an opportunity say 25 and above for a sound selection - and so match the bid.

You make a great point.

If a tall can stop or reduce intercept marking it can lead to repeat inside 50's and reduction of rebound 50's.

Meek could play that role, plus back up ruck and do ruckwork inside forward 50.

We'll match. Maybe not in the teens if that happened but I reckon we match anything 20 onwards.

Nice article on Zac Reid on the AFL site. I still say we should take him if he’s available at our pick despite him favouring defence in his early development. A year in defence for Peel and then start throwing him forward with a view to have him ready for KF by 2023 when we should be contenders. Ex team mate of Serong’s too.

Every time I see highlights of one of the kids around our pick I change my mind and think they are the best option.
Really looking forward to seeing who we grab.

It does look like we’ll have the choice of some good talent based on Bigfooty reviews. Always interesting on the day who 1) is available, and 2) who our club views as best.

yes I guess if he was not an nga and was there at pick 20 it would be reaching, above 25 getting closer to the mark - so when opportunity knocks and for the sake of a 150 points or so it is a no brainer.
