Athleticism in your talls is something that isn't common or easy. That would be the value in taking Neale.

You can't make them quicker, you can make them run better and longer but that can lead to their bodies breaking down. To be able to draft one who can already run takes that risk out.

Do we have the list spots for three picks before Walker/Western?

If things are that muddied around our first pick and there is the potential for a lot of players we like to be available later, the drafting team might consider trading down our first pick? Not sure exactly what that would look like, but if there are Vic kids who slide due to no exposure, or someone like NOD, it could be an option.

thought we were set up to take 4 (inc. W/W).

Seems a bit unclear but my assumption is yes. 37 main list 5 rookie = 42

It's so open this year, it's impossible to know. With the mystery surrounding the Victorians and live trading, I'm not even going to bother doing a mock draft this year. Just no point. I think there'll be players picked in the second round that nobody on BigFooty has even talked about. Especially with teams having very few picks. If we're going to take Walker and Western, our second pick might be our last live pick - given we'll be taking Banfield in the rookie draft. So we may have a surprise player we like.

More well known players like Ford, Winder, Neale, Baldwin and Callow could all be there. Victorian talls Rosman, McMahon and Allison could be in the mix. We might choose to go early on a mature aged guy like Waterman or Bockman. Maybe a WA bolter in Hunter or Martin.

Nothing would surprise me this draft.
Nothing can convince me that putting Banfield back on the list makes any sense. The only reason he isn't there already means we are holding that spot for someone that falls through the cracks and given the year it is likely to happen.

Mallard, Lane and Solomon were all overagers this year in Colts, with Mallard and Lane probably being the most dominant ruckman.

Neale wasn’t an overager and projects more in the FWD/Ruc role rather than dominantly a Ruckman.

Big fellas do take more time so don’t expect them to be running around in the firsts next year.
Neale kicked 3 goals in 8 games.

2.75 marks per game.

Sorry but doesn’t impress me.

If it doesn’t translate to the same, what’s the point?

Kicked 3 Goals in the second Allstars game if I recall.

“#37 Shannon Neale

Neale finally got to capitalise on his chances up forward, as the big 202cm ruck/forward from South Fremantle was his side’s leading goalkicker with three majors which all came in different ways. His first goal came in the second quarter, kicking a nice goal in general play off two steps. His second was from a nice juggled contested mark and set shot conversion, while the last came in the final quarter as Lane got the ball over the back and ran into an open goal. He could have had even more from another two shots on goal, with one snap just missing. Neale didn’t really influence enough in his time in the ruck, so being able to impact forward of centre was important. With his athleticism and size, he will prove a great project for recruiters.”

You don’t seem to rate him, so be it.

from Matt Balmer's live chat

Where is the earliest you see Caleb Poulter being drafted and possible teams
Maybe as early as Freo at 14ish

Who’s Freo targeting for there first pick. Also, where do you see a pick coming for there NGAs
Think their selection is very hard to predict. Probably the most unknown in top 20, Think their two academy guys are 30-40

Just the way we like it.

I think part of the mystery is that we'll most likely just wait and see who's available and so, we're very up in the air too.

If I had to guess, I'd say that we're hoping that one of Bruhn, Cox or Chapman fall through to us, otherwise we'll settle on O'Driscoll (if in fact he's available).

Looking at the highlights video ( yeah I know but thats all I got ) I just cannot see Cox falling all the way to 15. It will not happen.

The same?

All the players have a projection line drawn ahead of them with unseen hurdles to be discovered on the journey, the tall guys have the extra ones of their bodies failing under their size - when they can already run then it is one less hurdle to either jump or fail at on the projection line.

That represents value.

I think #30 is too high for Neale but recruiters would be looking at him because of his ceiling not because of his current work to date. He's raw in football terms - that probably counts for him rather than against him because he's shown some good things already - just not consistently. Like Western and Walker add outside speed, Neale ticks some other boxes for us but he's no sure thing.

West coast apparently trying to get back in to the first round, be interested to see what they would offer up to do so as they can’t trade next years picks after the Kelly trade

Bishop on Fox
PICK 14: FREMANTLE – HEATH CHAPMAN

Clubs:
West Perth/Western Australia

Position: Key Defender

Size: 193cm/81kg

Bio: The 18-year-old has been one of the risers throughout the season after getting an opportunity to play in Western Australia. His work at the WAFL Colts was very promising, also seeing him push into the senior side as a third tall back. Multiple clubs liken him to GWS’ Nick Haynes, given his ability to intercept the ball with ease. His rebound work is very good where he lets the ball sail up the ground, making good decisions down back. He won the 2km time trial at the WA Combine and has a number of suitors inside the top 20.

In the mix: Fremantle’s pick is hard to work out given the many possibilities just before them. There’s the potential of a tall like Chapman being around, while midfielders Caleb Poulter and Oliver Henry have also been raised.

PICK 34: FREMANTLE - BRANDON WALKER (BID MATCHED)

Clubs:
East Fremantle/Western Australia

Position: Medium Defender

Size: 183cm/75kg

Bio: The Fremantle Next Generation Academy member has a number of key traits that have caught the eye of recruiters around the country. Walker averaged 18.5 disposals and 4.9 tackles in the WAFL Colts this season, catching the eye with his moment in the defensive half of the ground. He has a fine vertical leap which can allow him to intercept when required, while his speed also can help him break the lines.

In the mix: The Dockers will match a bid on Walker in the 25-40 range.

PICK 44: FREMANTLE - ISIAH WINDER

Clubs:
Peel Thunder/Western Australia

Position: Small Forward/Midfielder

Size: 180cm/79kg

Bio: If clubs are looking for an explosive small forward, Winder might just be at the top of their list. The Peel Thunder prospect tested exceptionally well in the vertical leap, 20m sprint and agility test, where he finished inside the top 10. In five WAFL Colts games he averaged 28 disposals, 5.2 clearances and 5.2 tackles showing off his ability in the midfield. In the Colts Grand Final last year he slotted two goals, with clubs certainly getting a tough player with a pick outside the first round. His work in traffic is exceptional and as a defender, you will need to keep a very close eye on Winder given his ability to slot goals with ease.

In the mix: Winder would be one of the better WA prospects left on the draft board and could be too good to ignore.

PICK 45: FREMANTLE - JOEL WESTERN

Clubs:
Claremont/Western Australia

Position: Small Forward/Midfielder

Size: 172cm/68kg

Bio: Western is tied to Fremantle via the club’s Next Generation Academy and has a number of standout areas of his game. Athletically he is through the roof and is one of the players who has a fine mix of speed and endurance. He was the best player on the ground in the WA All-Stars match and had an outstanding Grand Final in the WAFL. He averaged 22.4 disposals for the season and majority of those hit the targets.

In the mix: The Dockers will either match a bid on Western in the 30-50 range or use their last pick on him.

Winder is an interesting one...reminds me a fair bit of Liam Ryan.

I'd love to get him but just can't see it happening, with the two NGAs and a developing tall forward needed, there just doesn't seem to be enough room on the list.

I agree with your ‘if I had to guess’ . The problem with it is that those four players are nothing like each other. An inside mid, a tall utility, a KPD, and a wing.

You realise he only kicked 3 goals in 8 games at Colts level.

One swallow doesn’t make a spring.
