Some of the Rankine post on here are unbelievable

He is a 25 game player in his 2nd season of being in a teams best 22, not to mention he is playing in a side that is struggling with any sort of game plan which makes it incredibly challenging for young players playing that small forward, or high HF role

Unbelievable that people are talking down this kids talent and worth

He suits Nicks game plan, woukd be damaging in our forward 50 and ill back our forward coach to work with his elite talent

He is not thenforst elite player to struggle in his first 50 games, GC environment makes it even more challenging

If he can get out of GC he will develop into a genuine star

Can't see anyone talking down his talent.

This is certainly shaping up as the time to strike for Rankine. GCS cap is screwed to the point they need to shed salary (from Cochrane a week ago), they want to add experienced players to make them more competitive, and Rankine is likely to have a well paying contract which they're getting relatively little out of at the moment.

That said, we have no business trying Keays at this point of time. Plus I doubt he has any interest in going to Gold Coast and in the end of the day, it's up to Keays.
$$$ speak pretty loud.
We are bottom 4 side have every right to do whatever it takes to improve the squad.
Ultimately MCrouch (2021), Keays (2022), Sloane (2023) and Laird (2026) in the same side is a disaster and who after Laird holds the most value is interesting.

Prefer a deal to get Horne but as i said wont happen then personally I would be going after Lukosius to deliver inside 50 to TT and Fog.
Go after Rankine or Hollands the following year followed by Horne.

What would you be happy for us to give up to get him? I'd love to have him on our list but I don't want us giving up a top 10 pick to get him.

Did I mishear Cochrane? I thought he said that they were struggling to reach the minimum of the cap

He added: “The salary cap this year has dropped by three-odd million. We still can’t afford this year’s salary cap.

Are you for real...why on earth do we want another wooden spoon to hang around our necks forever??? I can guarantee you this, we finish last we get Horne and he 'might' help us to win a flag and he might not...but I guarantee you we will have that second wooden spoon forever

Who cares? I will happily take wooden spoons if they lead to a premiership.

One thing is for sure, we aren't winning anything this year, so why not take the losses on the chin and look at the silver lining?

I'm not advocating tanking, I'm saying that we are going to finish down the bottom anyway ... Wonder how low we can get?

Does Thilthorpe not show you what absolute elite talent can do for our list? Even if we don't get Horne ... Pick 2 or 3 is still something worth smiling about. (Along with the youth coming through and obvious improvement in our entire organisation)

Thanks for that

That means the club is struggling to pay the salary cap, even though it dropped by $3m.

Not that their salary cap is full

He was highlighting their financial struggles
Hence why they've got some of their top draftees on significantly more than normal.

I read that as them being they can't pay the salary cap and if a team came in with a big offer for a player, they are going to struggle to be able to get close to matching it

I’m with Drugs. He’s saying they’re so broke they can’t even afford a reduced price

No, just no. You cannot say that getting wooden spoons will lead to premierships, but once you have 'won' a wooden spoon, it is hung around your neck forever as a club. If we finish bottom 3 which may be more on the cards now, we will still get a very good mid and anyway, who is to say Horne WILL be better than a number of other kids once they hit AFL systems. Sure he has been fantastic so far, but many of the vic kids have missed alot of footy and some even now are starting to show what they can do - and with a top 3 pick we are guaranteed to get one of them

I think he's telling a lie.

The salary cap for 2021 is $13.1 million. The AFL has routinely been giving Gold Coast between $17m and $23m per season, consistently among the highest of any club

They can afford the salary cap because the AFL gives them the money to do so

If Rankine or Lukosius were going to leave the Suns you'd imagine it would be a pay cut compared to whatever they'd get with them, what with their salary cap and 'ambassador' payments from the AFL keeping things afloat.

How does their revenue compare to other clubs?

Laird until 2026 is a cracker. What are those freaks smoking to think that was remotely necessary?

I disagree, the time to strike is when Rankine is likely to be at his cheapest. Depending on how bad GCS cap situation is (and Cochrane didn't make it sound like it was in a good place at all with his "we can't afford it this year" comment), it could easily be now. After all, they've signalled they want to get experienced players over as well which costs salary cap space, and they only way they're achieving it is by shedding players (and ones with big contracts, which undoubtedly Rankine has because they've already had to fight off interest from us and Port).

Really though, we midfielders and we need kids with high ceilings. We can wear a cameo (or multiple, really) player at the current time if they meet either (or both) criteria. After all, next year is likely a repeat of this year where we're just existing in the lower part of the table and just pumping games into our kids. A Rankine, or a Rowe really doesn't change much in that regard in the short term, and we really don't need it too. It could change a lot when we need it too, which is 3-5 years down the line.

Depending on how desperate they are, this could be doable for a 2nd round pick right now.
2nd round pick?

Don't mean to be rude but a 2nd round pick for a much hyped contracted Izak Rankine is just about the most ridiculous post I've seen for quite a while.

There's a difference between desperate and pure madness on the part of the GCS.

I disagree.

I don't think we are aiming for bottom - but if we get there then let's take what comes with it.

Means we get the best mid in the draft AND probably get a priority pick. People are always going on about the picks we lost because of Tippet stupidity and the Gibbs deal - why not take an extra one back the other way? Happy with pick 1 and pick 2?

I can't see how finishing last two years running ruins us as a club. It basically means we really reset at the end of 2019, it means we did it properly. What happens form here on is independent of all that imo.

We're not getting a PP. We've already won 5 games this year. Even in the bad old days, when Melbourne was tanking for PPs, the rule was that you only received a PP if you had less than 17 premiership points.

No one’s denying his talent but as a rebuilding club, we can’t risk trading for him because his value would be extremely high. We can’t afford 2 firsts for him, we need to wait til he’s out of contract and offer a second rounder for him. GC and the AFL screwed us big time the last few years in the draft, time to get some revenge.
On a side note, he’s supposedly on decent coin too which might be a problem. Not sure though

would rather we keep mcrouch than get dumont..

we need classy midfielders.. that aint dumont.

According to mutual friends, Dumont has been telling everyone that he will be back in SA at the end of the year. I'm happy for him to be Port's next missing piece.
