If we have a better run with injuries, we'll be fine.

Provided Ratts does a good job that is.

Hunter Clark has the skills to be something special in the midfield. Max King has shown he's a star. Bytel is a better user of the ball that both Dunstan or Ross. Highmore and Sharman have kind of come from nowhere. Connolly has some x factor. Byrnes has shown signs. I love the thought of Gresh and Higgins playing forward. We have grunt with Steele and Crouch. If Paddy and Roma can get on the park together they've shown what a good combination they can be.

We are SO much better off than when we were pinning our hopes on the likes of Acres and Ross was seen (by some) as our best player.

I was flat as hell back then. Couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel. Now i can see a heap of promise. Not head in the clouds stuff but we have some real talent on our list. Look at the transformation of Sincs. Steele is brownlowesque.

If we lose Ross and Dunstan the world isn't ending. It's not same old same old. We have better players now. Far better players.

Nah, should have just taken Parish and left it at that.
Up until this year Parish was very get-table , but no one wanted to over pay Dodo for a player they thought was Dunstan standard but worse.
The had no other option this year but to play him as a inside mid due to the injuries to McGrath , Shiel , Caldwell and Heppel and he turned into a contested clearance beast.

Hill was brought into the team because we were desperate for outside run - over paid yes , but one thing good about getting him is he lured Ryder to the club and Ryders contact to Howard helped us secure Howard on both modest contracts compared to some on the list if they say Billings is on 800k a year.

Crouch we pick up as a very good possession midfielder basically just for money and the cost was said to be 600k which is a bargain.
Also last season we had limited draft picks so to come away with Crouch was a very good get and it doesn't matter what anybody says , he improved our midfield - imagine if we never had him this year , we even had to fall bad on Dunstan who they had written off - suppose everyone had written off.

Both are massive upgrades to what we had and improved our squad and both are around 28 in there prime with more than a couple good years left in them.

If we lose Billings so be it , he was the midfielder we wanted in the draft but he turned out to be a half forward / Wing and no earth shattering player who we have been over paying for years - we are now getting the books a justed and bringing realistic contract values into the squad apart from Hannerbery and Hill all the rest have been astute purchases.

Most probably Billings and Ross have been taken back from there drop in salary but in reality they have been weakening our power to get more talented players when they became available.
Dunstan as we know is another story , he and everyone one else had written him off and he was most probably expecting to be leaving this year anyway.

Our squad is 100% better to where we were 3 years ago - with the additions of Hill , Crouch , King , Ryder , Higgins , Bytel , Byrne , Connolly , Sharman , Butler , Howard , Jones , Heath , Allison , Wilkie , Highmore and the improvement of Steele , Sinclair and even McKenzie I couldn't be happier.
Can I borrow your crystal ball fmd

The competition is so even all it will take is a couple of players lifting to another standard like Steele or a lesser extent Sinclair and we are in it up to our eyeballs and we have the talent who could just do that.
Gresham , Clark , Coffield , Battle , Bytel , King the list goes on and who knows Marshall gets back to his best form with a uninterrupted season , Hill delivers constantly the flags the limit.
The upside to our poor season is we should have a top 10 draft pick and hopefully we get lucky and we pick up Winhager and Owens .

We wouldn’t of got him anyway. Didn’t go at our pick

I seen Kingy when he was drink driving and he told me emphatically that St Kilda should never have traded for Carlisle, if they wanted Gresham just draft him at 5, but then they miss out on Petracca which is another bad move and giving up 4 first rounders for Hill was a list management disaster.
Also should have taken Parish at pick 21.

What people don't realise is that guys like Ross, Dunstan and billings aren't necessarily bad, but they do just enough.
They do just enough to keep their spots in the side but won't ever improve to take us deep into finals.
The keep a stranglehold on important positions in the team which young players could come in and be better in. Guaranteed if Geary wasn't injured we wouldn't have seen Connolly.
We need to be bold and make changes to improve.
They aren't core players. They aren't the leaders. They aren't the stars. Let's stop treating them as such.

I do agree with pretty much everything you said, but Seb Ross is in the leadership group. He was Vice Captain from 2018 until the end of 2020.

I realise the club has a total lack of leadership, but he is meant to be one.

Yeah. David king is a dickhead!

Its nice to be positive but you can also go too far which then sets you up for disapointment , we may scrape into the 8 next year but I wouldn't bank on us too much damage , IMO if we are going to be close to playing in a GF it's not going to be until 2024 -2025

If I'm reading this correctly (net loss): if we lose Dunstan, Billings and Ross, we could end up with one really high pick or even more?
It seems like they won't hand out three individual picks, but add up their total value and then dish out our picks.

Based on age and their next contract, let's say Dunstan is end of 2nd round pick, Billings 2nd, Ross 3rd. The net of that would be about pick 8.
So we could very well head to the draft with consecutive picks 7 and 8. Billings might net us more as he's in his "prime" and might receive the largest contract, in which case we might receive pick 8 plus a 3rd round.

If we get pick 8 (depending where we finish, lower is better), I think we'd split this one for two early 2nds, and keep 7. We need a stack of picks this year.

Compensation

A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.

The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:

1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.

Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.

Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:

• 1st round
• end of 1st round
• 2nd round
• end of 2nd round
• 3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

So the maybe we don’t need to let billing’s go to get into the second round if not later first. The sum of spook and seb might get us there. Interesting.

Can I just confirm the possibility of old Gil handing out a 1st round pick as compensation for the total sum of the players lost?

This seems absurdly fanciful to me

I'm not liking that reinforcement news.

Hypothetically, if we were to part ways with one or two of Billings/Ross/Dunstan and O’Meara became available because of Hawthorn’s rebuild what would everyone think?

Hearing Clarkson’s comments on 360 makes me think O’Meara may have been one of the senior players that wanted him to stay.

Wow pretty impressive trolling then. Seems to have a lot of knowledge about St.Kilda players.

I don't agree with many of his views, however I don't see him as a troll. Don't mind his input on the whole.
Get this JAB, I am impressive in whatever I do. I especially enjoy putting some of these beige numbnuts to the sword over their noticeable lack of football knowledge, whingeing and most certainly lacking in class during any football discussion.

He's an interesting one. He's a good player, but I'd probably pass. At 28 prior to next season and requiring a trade, it's probably not worth it I think. He's not an elite player, more a B grade midfielder - maybe slightly above. Would prefer to invest in developing youth.

Thats not how it works.

Adelaide last year lost both Crouch and Atkins to FA and got seperate picks for both.

SO if we lose all three, it will be the 3 individual picks no matter what band they are. They don't add 3 average picks together to become 1 good pick.

Unless you took all three of the compensation picks and traded them up for a first rounder. But we're in a spot where we need points for NGA picks.

I suspect we'll trade Lonie and he might fetch us a pick in the 40's to 50's (before bids). It alone should be enough to get one of Windhager or Owens. Fair deal in my view
