things about to get a little bit spicey

According to the AFL website the club is about to lock Max away until the end of 2024 (possibly longer), the day after the Herald-Sun (Jay Clark) speculated that Ben is about to be aggressively pursued by the Saints. Even though Ben is contracted until the end of 2022.

It’s difficult to believe that the timing of both stories is a coincidence. Something is brewing behind the scenes. You can sense it.

At the very least, St Kilda are shutting down any possibility that Gold Coast launches a pre-emptive raid on enticing Max away from the Saints. His commitment removes that option for the Suns (as unlikely as it may have been).

Max’s contract extension possibly makes it tougher for the Suns to hold Ben if both boys want to play together. Maybe the Saints seem think that this is a real possibility in the shorter term. If so, pressure is being applied.

Interesting times ahead.

Will veteran be offered a new deal?
St Kilda is keen to extend Paddy Ryder’s career into a 16th season as the club admitted he might have walked away from football if not granted early-season personal leave.

St Kilda’s mature approach to Ryder’s four-week leave period saw the club adamant that Ryder needed to be approved leave to work on “areas missing in his life”.

Now he has returned to put together some slashing form as the Saints attempt to push for finals on the back of the Ryder-Rowan Marshall ruck combination.

Ryder’s two-year deal expires this year after stints at Essendon and Port Adelaide.

But St Kilda chief operating officer Simon Lethlean said the club hoped Ryder, 34 in March next year, had more football left in him.

“This is the second year of his two-year deal and I think he intends to play on next year and we are keen to have him. We haven’t got to that conversation yet but if he wants to play on we want him. He has been one of the better tap ruckmen in the competition in the last decade or so, him and Nic (Naitanui) are up there, and he allows Rowan to lay alongside Max King in the forward line.

“We were always going to (grant him leave), but in your quiet moments it’s pretty difficult to accept because you are not going to pick your best team. But we knew his wellbeing and welfare were critical to him and us. If he wasn’t allowed to go, he might not have played again at all. The pay-off is he’s better and happier and he’s playing again. He’s in a really good space at the moment.”

Ryder was solid in his battle against twin talls Mark Blicavs and Esava Ratugolea after Marshall went down, winning the hit out count 35-21 and picking up 16 disposals

Lethlean said free agent Jack Billings had always timed his contract negotiations late in the season, with St Kilda confident he would stay.

“History shows with Jack that he hasn’t engaged with his contract until the end of the year and we don’t see it any differently this time. Jack is pretty settled at St Kilda.”

Fellow free agent Seb Ross is in contract talks that will see him re-sign.

“He is at the end of a three-year deal. But (list boss) James Gallagher has started conversations with his manager Alex McDonald about the future. He has been here a long time and we don’t expect he will be heading anywhere else,” Lethlean said.

Some great news! I don't think an elite inside mid is happening this trade period if we are locking away ross.

Ross is taking a haircut, Billings is off under FA, we get compo 1 and use it on Taranto with benny boy after his contract.

Yes

Yes but I feel as if contracts mean nothing nowadays
That’s fair enough but realise that the Treloar sitch was a one off. It’s very rarely actually like that.

Alex Sexton apparently has been told to find another club. Any interest?

He's kind of like a poor mans Membrey but he'd be handy in the short term as depth. Probably better uses of a list spot really but he'd be a better option than Mason Wood I guess.

I rate him but there must be a reason he’s been dropped three times this season??

No but it would be naive of me to think that one of our own players wouldn’t break a contract to leave for another club.
We have seen many players leave under contract, well atleast try too in many cases.
Hill, Daniher(the first time, Papely, Beams, dunkley, Bruce too name a few.
Under contract means if we want him we keep him. Can only break a contract with agreement of both parties. See Dunkley for details

I still feel like none of our small forwards are elite ball users and it hurts us. To often do butler and Lonie fail to find targets or kick to advantage when they receive the ball on quick transition with an open forward line. Higgins is a bit better by foot, but not above average.

I am sure Lonie was a better kick in his first year than he is now.

I am talking a Butters/Fantasia/Walters type.

Hind was probably the best user out of them and we traded him for peanuts.

Hopper is going to be the best of the lot of them.
Tom Green goes alright. Might not be the best but he’s going to be a gun. I reckon he’ll win the rising star.

Yer we need more list cloggers. Great idea.

He's not a clogger though is he, he's played good finals games before and been a best 22 player in a consistent top 4 side. He's not a great player but he's adequate. He looks like a ruck who plays forward IMO. Grundy stops him playing in his best spot and up forward he gets used a lot like we use King now, sitting under the drop of the ball for the bomb-in hoping to spill the ball out the back.

When you look at guys like Hickey who's just come good at 30 and Lycett who's done the same at 28 you realise most rucks don't find their best form until late career. Cox is 30 now but started a few years later than most and hasn't had a consistent run at first ruck so I think he could at least be a cheap option to take over from Ryder for a couple of years while we develop a younger ruck. Hopefully we get Ryder to play on but it's not an awful idea.
