Would do Billings and a First for Ben all day long!

The fact that Billings is out of contract, in good form and just his FA years is like the stars aligning here. He will do well at another club and will hurt us only a small amount to lose.

Billings out.
Clark to a wing/mid rotation.
Coffield and/or Connolly (hopefully is good) to the back flank where Clark has been. Paton to squeeze into the backline next year too.

We can cover Billings.
We do not have a Ben King!

Imagine the marketability of The Two Kings for 10 years!! I'd lose Billings and a First in an instant. Thank you for the service JB!
It’s the most likely option of navigating this scenario. Take 1 and King this year or 2 this year and trade the 22/23 firsts.

Effectively Billings and a first rounder for Ben king.

We don't have a Ben King?

There is one guy in our side pretty similar.

Even if we did end up with 2 firsts we'd he better off taking them to the draft, getting two quality mids or on key defender and then going after Ben next year.
Don’t go near a tall if we have 2 firsts at the draft.

Best player available and they should be mids at our pick/s.

Take 1 genuine mid and 1 flanker/mid.

Gresh permanent FP in 2022. Let Lonie disappear into the sunset.

Don't mind it but we need a key defender. Can't just keep bringing in ordinary stop gaps.

Why couldn’t he be more than a half back flanker? We have Long, Highmore, Webster etc. to fill that role. Let Coff of the leash for a few games then, worse case scenario is he fails, but gets his confidence back at attacking the ball. Besides it’s who we have now, not who we may have in the future. With our injuries of especially mids this year, what could be the harm?

Absolute respect half back is a critical position.. like Highmore too ..different again , more dour type
but again critical to your back 6 as calm interceptor...

Coffield has really nice step , reeks of a player that needs continuity playing set up role , goes
for hard kicks to open play , given time and perseverance .

Bytel , Byrnes & Clark all ready good in traffic their the future , but need more depth in midfield.
A lot more ...
Releases Steele forward rotating on the ball , 3 small forwards doesn’t work on because longer
game exposes teams that don’t rotate large numbers through midfield .
Hence why our second half’s are so poor , midfield fatigues gets over run due to it.

Puts pressure back on the club so that they actually realise that fans aren't going to put up with their incompetence?
But surely writing a letter to them would be a far more effective way of doing that than writing the same thing on here over and over and over again? Making this place miserable af in the process.

Or write multiple letters or phone calls to them. Surely you’ll get far more bang for your buck doing it that way.

Looks like what Poulter was going to be last year and we went and picked up a long term project Battle style utility instead. If you actually grab a few and start to sort through them you are more likely to find one.

I'd actually prefer it if he stays. If we are in a match against the Dogs with all our best players up forward it might not actually get down there unless we find some more midfield quality. We need stars but it's all condensed up forward if we have two Kings. He's the romantic choice but perhaps not the wisest choice.
Dogs are going to be stupidly hard to beat in coming years with that midfield, plus Naughton, English, JUH and Bruce up forward, and yet another high-quality father-son due this year, in Darcy, so we might as well just have some fun watching the King twins in action!

Well the early rhetoric from the club was thas Snaggs would rotate as a mid and Steele would rotate forward and it's really not happened. Ratts seems a bit poor at following through actually.

Yeah mate we have history on that one

Kent

Yeah but we need one now, no time to wait for a draftee to develop.
That's the kind of thinking that has us where we are. We have refused to invest in a quality key defender and look for players that can plug holes.

It isn't that easy just to get a really good key defender from another club. I think the longer we hold off the more issues we have.

We need a long term solution.

It’s not like we didn’t try to go about it that way. Got Hugh Goddard for exactly that reason, but for some reason he fell off a cliff after that first, highly promising season (where he held down a key position for the last 8 rounds, at just 18/19yo- including one 20 disposal game, after going well in the VFL prior to that).

Was like a shadow of his former self the following year though (even in the intraclub, and the VFL) and never got it back. I found what happened to him mystifying and super-disappointing.

Then we invested a reasonable amount in Clav as well.

Plus of course we gave up first rounders in trades for Carlisle and Howard, but unfortunately Jake has had his career completely derailed by persisting back injuries. Prior to that he was in top 2-4 in the B&F form, at just 25/26yo.

So we’ve actually invested pretty heavily in “KPD’s”.

You mean the club aren't on big footy trawling through posts looking for suggestions? Well blow me down with a feather.

Goddard was years ago and hasn't been on our list for a long time now. It's like saying we've invested heavily in mids because we took Dunstan. That period is well behind us now.

It was obvious last year Carlisle was on the outside and his body has been an issue for years.

Clav is nearly 4 years in and very lucky to be playing his first game this week. I hope we aren't thinking we don't need to find another key defender because he's the answer.

So you're saying that although we need a ready starter, we should still draft a kid instead, because we should have drafted a kid several years ago.

Although we should have drafted mids.

Although we did draft Claverino some years ago, like you're saying we didn't...

I like having Joyce as backup, much better than having someone with the ability of Joel Tippett there for backup, and there is still a chance he will continue to improve. Jason Blake was not much of a defender at the start of his career, by the end he was damn good at it.

When did I say we didn't draft Clavarino?

And yes I'm saying we should draft a key defender. The longer we hold the longer we will have issues.

Our list is not there yet and we need to keep looking at the future.

And yes we should have also drafted mids. It was obvious to everyone that mids and key defenders were our biggest issue going into last draft but we took neither.

You can go on thinking that a club will happily hand over a quality key defender for next to nothing but I find it unlikely.

Yeah but the club was neglectful because Jake and Doogs were traded for when we should have drafted guys like Goddard and Claverino. So there...

I think he got injured in his second pre season and was behind the 8ball and then the achilles.
