Is it worth throwing Battle in with the inside mid group over the entire pre season just to see how he goes?
big body, hard at it, good kick, high endurance. He may not be able to play the role but if we’re not willing to play him back or forward then why not try? Maybe turn him into a tagger like we did with Sean Dempster?

Hell to the Yes.
Cmon down Bing, welcome home.
The way they dealt the Jack Martin trade , they would not let him go so he went into the open market and luckily for Carlton no one was willing to pay what Carlton was offering 700k , that might be a bit different with Ben King because a few clubs would offer good money for him and it has to be remembered Martin was not contracted.

For all the sh*t that Brad Hill has copped this year, can we take some time to appreciate the last 2 months. Has had an incredible run of form, that highlights why we recruited him. If he plays like that for a whole season, suddenly is in the 40 man AA squad conversation.

Looks much better since he went to defence and regained confidence.

I understand, and do agree that 800k should be spent on elite players. when we recruited him that’s what he was, and had shown that for multiple years. Yes he has had a rough start with the saints but can you imagine the pressure he was under? Especially early in the year with a disappointing year last year and people saying that he had to perform because of the longer quarters. Then suddenly to having a bad month, and having everybody slam him. We have all had bad days at work, even maybe a bad month or so. The difference is that we don’t come home at night and hear about it on the news, or we don’t hear about it on the radio when driving to work. One can only imagine what kind of toll that would have taken, and would have only made the pressure to perform even worse. Especially after he was racially abused and had his partner being abused as well. I think it’s no coincidence that he has started to play his best footy after he quit social media, and stopped checking the news, I remember an article about it and he said that it made him feel trapped and that wherever he went he had people asking him, or after games messaging him about how sh*t he was and how he didn’t deserve the money, and he could never get away from it, and by letting go of social media it made him feel free and able to play good football again.

Never saw him as elite. He was an A grade player though.

I don’t propose to know anything about it, but I wonder if he has a slight injury, that is maybe preventing him from playing a full game on the wing. He seems to have his calf heavily strapped each game, and have seen the physio’s run out to him to check on him in the last few games. HBF is a far easier position to play than wing, so might be helping him, and maybe Ratts knows that he is having a good 2 months and wants to keep that confidence up going in to next year. That and the mighty D-Mac has become irreplaceable on the wing.
Easier is the correct word to use. You wont get 26+ possies running past someone on the wing for a handball all day long. His running does not seem to be affected from his possible injury. On his money he should be able to oust Mckenzie from a wing though. He has not kicked a shedful of goals in his career so a forward flank might not be the place either. Club would be better suited with a good marking CHF and then Hills kicks would get some impact as he runs through the centre. A couple of tough games coming up so we will see what position they put him in now that Coffield is back and Clark may be back as well.

GWS signing Josh Kelly on a 8 yr deal would have to be the worst move the club could make , he is very good as we know but he is not a Buddy Franklin.
27 next year and a 8 contract , I feel at times the managers of this kids only look at there cut - for his career he might of been better going to another club with a future and atmosphere - They already have mega deals with Whitfield , Greene , Coniglio and now Kelly and they can't keep paying overs for players when you have so many first round draft picks getting to a stage they want there piece of the pie.
Hopper , Taranto , Tom Green , Ash , Perryman , Taylor these guys will all be looking for bigger contracts next time around.

Hopefully players like Riccardi and O'Halloran can fall our way. Handy players who should be dirt cheap. Too much midfield depth there

Kelly will be 27 at the start of next season so that takes him to 35 ........ ridiculous contract from GWS for an already battered player
Anything after 30 should be on a yearly contract , if he breaks down next year and can't play again they have that money on there cap for years.
Many clubs have made the same mistake - we have done it as well just look at Roberton and Hannerbery.

Sounds like absolute piss but thought I’d share nonetheless
That’s fair enough. Play hard ball. What port and norf are offering is probably about right for him. So either we get the compo we want or we match the offer, force a trade or just keep him. Win, win for the club

Given his age and his status I doubt its a straight up Buddy type 8 year deal. At least 2 or 3 of the last years will have triggers.

So Tom Morris reckons Billings is leaving the Saints to take up a contract that only places in the Top 70% of all player contracts.

Jeez - and they actually get paid to write this crap. At least the bulls*** we write doesn't anybody a cent

The bands are as follows:

- Top five per cent = first-round pick

- Top 15 per cent = end-of-first-round pick

- Top 30 per cent = second-round pick

- Top 50 per cent = end-of-second-round pick

- Top 70 per cent = third-round pick

- Below that = no pick

No, he lacks the agility for it. He needs to be marking the ball in the forward line or defense line. If we're not gonna use him for that then we should stop torturing the bloke and trade him out to the club of his choice.

If he agrees to go to another club.
You just take them to the table if the compensation isn’t what you want.

for example. Ports first is currently 15. Roughly 17 after Daicos and Darcy.
I don't think either St Kilda or Port Adelaide are looking at it the way you posted.
Port will be in the mix for a flag/s in the next few years and a Free Agent(Billings) along with a 1st round pick provides them with even greater depth,to achieve that goal
If the Saints have offered Billings the suggested $350 -$ 400 K then to me they are happy to receive that 2nd round pick, and have already determined how or which way they will use it.
Our pick in the 40s and a 2nd Rd pick for Billings can get us enough points for WB 1st Rd pick which they will use those points on Sam Darcy.
That's how I think we(Saints) would like to go about things anyway.
Earlier in this thread George suggested we may possibly look at delisting, trading out and retiring as many as 11 players,so exit meetings just after the season concludes for us will be a guide to which way we go into the Trade and Draft Periods. Not sure it will be as many as that 11 suggested.
I personally think in this Trade and Draft Periods our priority should be looking at at least 2 x talented Mids and the best available KPD then we decide who on our NGA Academy are worthy of an AFL spot.
I think we leave the Ben King situation for when he is out of contract.
Which ever way the Recruiters go about let's hope the get it right.
GO SAINTS

I'd argue that he was elite for his position yes, but I'd still reserve that kind of money for players who have fair fewer deficiencies in their game. I can't think of too many wingmen that have commanded that kind of contract in the AFL that haven't been able to impact the game in a contested manner.
Rightly or wrongly, highly paid players will always come under media scrutiny when they perform poorly and it's up to the player to overcome that (which he's seeming to have done. He's a product of the clubs decision to overpay him both contractually and for what we gave up, which is what I'm more critical of.
The social media abuse and trolling however, is not only disgusting, but cowardly too.

If there is a better option then just taking the compo. Why wouldn’t we explore that?

you can easily still achieve the type of deal you want with the dogs and get better Value for Billings.

What would that even look like? Something like…

- Top five per cent = 900+

- Top 15 per cent = 750+

- Top 30 per cent = 600+

- Top 50 per cent = 450+

- Top 70 per cent = 350+
