Would be pretty OK with Billings staying.

Ross or Dunstan? Not too concerned.
Yeah if we keep Billings and lose the other two I'll be ok with it. Losing all three was concerning me. We don't have the kind of depth to just lose three players who are comfortably at the level. Particularly both Billings and Ross - two link players. Sounds like Dunstan is gone and Billings more likely to stay. I'll be ok either way with Ross.

The numbers don't concern me. His high production in the championships suggest he can find it, but it is strange that Sydney would happily part with him. Have seen some commentary about a lack of a hard edge, so it's not a sure thing. I do think that Sydney have very specific views about the types of players they need though. They've had a willingness over the years to let go of players that don't fit into their system, even though the player is individually able to fit in smoothly at another club. On the other hand, he might just not be up to it. I'd hope we have a look at least.

To me he's not coming cheap and is not looking like what I'd chase. I'd rather get a mid with our first pick and find a Brodie or Lipinski type to be that interim mid while we develop our new kids. It replaces the output of Dunstan or Ross with a ready to play type. Brodie was a high pick too and actually gets high numbers.

I reckon we'll be very light on without them. We'd probably have to trade in players to cover them. Last year that didn't work so well.

It's hard to tell if it's cheap or not. If he ends up being even remotely close to the player he was drafted to be then getting him for a second rounder is very cheap. If he stays where he is then a second rounder is overs. Lipinski and Brodie are probably safer, but potentially a lower ceiling. I think we've got enough midfielders who can go through and be solid citizens in there so I'd probably prefer to punt on someone who is a bit more high risk/high reward. I'm not sold on him either though.

Yeah, Sydney are a very professional set up. I'd be very weary of picking him up. It's not like he's on massive money and they are actively trying to off load him. Warning bells to me.

Nah can cover both Ross and Dunstan, we will bring in a ready made replacement for Dunny, and Bytel will rocket up the charts next year. Billings will stay and can cover Ross, with Gres and Clark.

Easy peasey

We really need to move forward not stay still and you seriously dent your injury cover. Have a look at the North list compared to ours, there isn't much difference. Even Adelaide probably have a better spread of top end talent than us this year but less quality in their tier down from that because they are playing a youth heavy side.

We take out our tier down players and we are a lot less solid all of a sudden. If we have a couple of injuries and some kids stay still we could easily drop down the ladder. Suns should improve, Carlton should improve, GWS, Freo should improve, Collingwood and Adelaide are a bit of an unknown but aren't as bad as they look and North probably aren't moving more than a couple of spots up despite not being a walk over. West Coast and Richmond probably need a rebuild and could be on the slide but doubt they collapse completely.

To me weakening our list is a dangerous move because financially we just can afford to take a step backwards with our momentum. I know quite a few Saints supporters and there is definitely a lot of frustration out there after people thought that we were a lot closer than we are.

I think this is the growing consensus. I personally prefer Dunstan to Ross. As bad as he is by foot he's exceptional by hand. Ross is just middle of the road, or worse.

McLean has gone ok in the matches I've watched him in. Anyone who's done a few seasons with Buddy has had a decent apprenticeship. He's kind of a younger McKernan (in size and position) so would be and upgrade on him.

sydney have promoted young kids at every opportunity, I’m thinking slow burn or just a bust as we know it happens.

It's a tricky one. Ross is a spreader and plays outside mid when he does go in but has been pushed back to the flanks where a kid could probably cover him. Dunny is a high production inside mid and makes our inside brigade work better together but only when we have a good ruck man.

Ideally they both sign on for less and we don't make a hole that needs filling. Any compo we get for Dunny is going on replacing him, perhaps even cost us to swap him out for someone like Brodie or Lipinski.

Neither are guns but both are solid.

They are stacked with young midfield talent though. Behind Parker and Kennedy you have Mills, Florent, Rowbottom, McInerny, Gulden, Campbell and Warner who'd all be ahead of him. Not a bad crop of players to be stuck behind.

Yeah, cashing in before his value drops completely is my thought. He's either a dickhead, lazy or not very good would be my guess. I'd rather take a second round pick to the draft unless we are getting a more proven player.

We were forced to blood kids this year and look how Highmore, Byrnes, Connelly and Sharman went for us. We keep plodders like Ross and Dunstan and their development is clogged

No to McLean - some better long term options available. Looks like Billings is might be happy with less pay but a longer term. How would people feel about 4 x $500k+ with incentives?
More interested with their views on Parker and Crouch. Parker still has no contract infront and Hanners needs some company in rehab so we should get Crouch

So how much are you offering Billings in a contract? What if he wants 700k which is less than what he's reportedly on? There's no way we should pay it. His output is between 400k - 500k

Coleman-Jones still unsigned, he's the bloke we should be gunning for… would be the perfect combo with Marshall for the next 5-10 years.

201cm 105kg, kicked 11 goals in 7 matches this year.

Smells like a future 2nd to me.

He's got very sticky fingers for a ruckman too...

Agree wholeheartedly, thats why I am comfortable with Ross and Dunstan going.

That's a good aim and I don't think they are players worthy of being in our bests but they are certainly taking out middle tier players. We don't have as much talent on the books as people think.

Excellent players: Steele, King- still on potential but what a show he's put on lately, Sinclair.
Good players: Howard, Marshall, Ryder, Jones, Billings, Ross, Dunny, Crouch, Hill, Gresham, Membrey, Highmore, Wilkie, Webster, Paton, DMac, Higgins.
Developing players: King, Clark, Coffield, Paton, Sharman, Connolly, Bytel, Byrnes, Allison, Heath
Borderline: Butler, Lonie, Kent, Wood, Calvarino, Joyce, Geary, Long, Battle
Gone: Carlisle, Alla, Hunter, McKernan, Frawley, Roberton, probably Lonie. Hanners.

It's the reason we remain competitive is that that big group of good means that when the bulk of them play well we can take out better sides. Take out some of the pieces of that group and push some into the developing or borderline categories and the competitiveness drops away. We saw it when we had injuries this year. We can't afford passengers or injuries as it is.

Losing Dunstan I can live with. He was out the door after round 1 but injuries aided his cause. He is playing near his ceiling and same old issues arise disposal by hand and foot counterbalancing desire passion and contested possessions. He is the easiest to replace.

Ross runs a heap and the reason we spotlight and criticise him is he regularly gets the ball. There are other players that go under the radar as they do not get it as much...Brynes and Bytel. Is he any better than Lipinski or Bowes? I do not know but I would rather get one of the two and keep Ross and let natural selection take place.

Like we did with Koby Stevens. He won his spot fair and square ahead of incumbants so be it.

The market will decide whether Billings comes or goes....pure and simple. Saints know his worth to the club and if the market betters it so be it.

On exposed form Byrnes Bytel and Connolly will be in and out of the side next year as they have not done enough on a regular basis. Another frdraftee competiting for spots is a good thing making cream rising to the top scenario.

Another mid in from another club will keep the pressure on Ross Billings Clarke et al to perform or be dropped.

Cooper just made Battle have to compete for a position.

These are good outcomes.

NFL players used to say practice and competition for spots made training during the week harder than playing on game day.

Bring it on Saints.

Players coming back from injury dead wood cut and new faces emerging makes for next year an interesting pre season.
